The orgins of civilization in Mesoamerica

The family and I were travelling in the Yucatan some months back. Whenever we go to an ancient land I am always interested in the ruins of the civilizations that inhabited it before modern times. My son and I were talking during a tour of an Olmec site with a tour guide. He asked me a question about how the Olmec learned how to build and form a structured society. I told him to ask our tour guide and see what he would say. The tour guide said that there is a story that the original royal class came by boat to the Yucatan. When they arrived they established a civilization with the native peoples of the land. I then asked where is it they were thought to come from. He mentioned that there were many theories but it was probably from the old world. I had never heard of that and figured that it was the ingenuity of the people of the area that built their civilization. Anyone ever heard of this and if so where do you think this small group came from?

Genetics and archaeology say they came down over the land bridge from Asis during the ice age. Whether the Yucatan royalty sailed in from some other part of modern Mexico or Guatemala is possible though, I'm sure.

Some religious nuts (read: Mormons) want to believe native Americans and mesoamericans are the remnants of the lost tribes of Israel. Pretty silly. But of course, if your Revealed Truth is based on that odd theory, you'll fight pretty hard for it, certainly. :p

Is it just me, or do you seem to always be traveling to exotic locales?

If that is the case, can I come in your suitcase?

Just be careful; if it's leather it might be pretty hard to get out.

Yeah we do travel a lot. Just how I roll I guess. As far as coming with we take people all the time. Can't tell you how many times we take friends, their kids or family with us.

You could travel in a suitcase but remember there is a 75lb international limit per bag. We may have to cut you in half or three pieces to make this work. Since we can't lock these suitcases anymore you may end up being completely stolen or a piece of you stolen by some third world baggage handler. Still interested?
