Some things are better left buried/undiscovered...

So what do you beleive should have been left buried or never discovered? Why?

For me it it would be mind reading tech and brainwashing (cultish type).

Portable timepieces. Clocks that could be mounted anywhere or worn on a wrist or in a pocket is source of all evil in the modern world. *nod*

We would have been better off if clocks had remained something that weighed a thousand pounds and had to be mounted on the tops of town halls.

The suburbs.

The world was much better when industry, scholarship, and business were in cities, and agriculture and the mansions of the leisurely rich were in the countryside. Suburban sprawl where everything is a bland mixture of retail, business, industrial, and residential is a disaster to the American landscape.

But I should point out that so far these are all inventions. Inventions have the capacity to change the world for the worse.

Discoveries are about knowledge. Knowing more is almost never a bad thing. Would a third of Europe have been better off if they had died, but no one ever figured out that it was the same disease? The Jews who were killed in riots as scapegoats would certainly have been better off if it had been discovered that it was because of the parasitic bugs that traveled on rats.

Cell phones. I don't like the way that people can contact me wherever I am, 24/7.
On the other hand, I do like the way I can contact them. Maybe if there were a one-way cell phone? That's what we need, a one-way phone. And it would be mine.

That Jesus guy that died nearly 2000 years ago should've been left buried, IMO. Wouldn't've given that Mohammed guy ideas either...

Absolutely nothing should ever be left undiscovered or buried. Knowledge should not be feared, no matter what it is.

Absolutely not. Aside from the fact that it's not possible, there is nothing to fear from knowledge. Only the people who use it should be feared, because they're the ones that can use it for either good or evil.

We would have been better off if clocks had remained something that weighed a thousand pounds and had to be mounted on the tops of town halls.I'll see that and even raise it a bit. 1000-lb sundials in the town square, rather than something that would work even in the dark!

Absolutely nothing should ever be left undiscovered or buried. Knowledge should not be feared, no matter what it is.Okay, that's true. But banning the actual use of portable timepieces is something I'd wholeheartedly support! *nod*

My view, too. Increasing humanity's store of knowledge in every field is good.

most of discovery is out of need rather than curiosity. I'm sure the first time someone ate and artichoke or a clam it was because he was hungry (probally seeing an animal eat it first)

As for undiscovered : War,Murder,Torture these should never have been discovered and expolited.

**exception Olives - I like to drop them into vodka and watch them drowned then chew on there soft bodies and spit out thier pits of hearts. Killing baby olives is just wrong. ***

Mind-reading tech does not exist, and brainwashing is a side-effect of humanity's status as a social animal.

"Alternative" spellings. (Yes, yes, I know, if nobody had started spelling 'alternatively' we'd be stuck the Elk knows where, language-wise)

The content of that container someone left in the fridge at some unreconstructable point of time. Experience should have taught me better than to inspect the interior of containers that appear to have been forgotten in the fridge.

What gelatin is.

What my flatmate looks like when the chronically bulging-till-bursting-point bathrobe actually does surrender to the strain.

Cell phones. I don't like the way that people can contact me wherever I am, 24/7.

On the other hand, the 'off' button on a cellphone or the metaphorical 'ignore' function of one's brain is something we urgently need to unearth.

P.S. This thread does, of course, vitally lack the obligatory Douglas Adams quote: In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
