Canary Islands

We are planning our vacations for the next year. We are planning on making the Canary Islands one of our stops. It looks like we will have about 10 days in the islands to visit and relax. Was wondering if there were some things that we should not miss while we are there. Our plan is to fly from Morocco to the islands instead of taking a cruise.

Anyone have any suggestions?

It is possible to fly from Morocco to the islands, but it is quite expensive and not the usual way of getting there. Depending on where else you are visitng you will find it easier, mroe convienient and cheaper to fly from Europe. There was talk of a ferry being launched from Tarfaya in Morocco to one of the Canary islands, but that was before the hype about illegal immigrants, and I think it might have been shelved because of that, but it might be worth checking out as it's only a short crossing on the ferry (about 60 miles) and would be a hell of a lot cheaper than R.A.M.

The reason we were planning from Morocco is because we have a summer home in the north of Morocco that we go every year. I guess the ferry is an option and do agree with the fact that Royal Air Maroc is expensive. Were you talking about the ferry out of Casablanca or Laayoune? It may actually work best if we had a ferry from Tangiers since we are so close.

Aren't the Canary Islands planning to make their power 100% renewable...?

Not sure about Layoune. The plan was to have one from Tarfaya. From Tangiers all the ferries are to mainland Spain or Gibraltar. If you are around Tangiers probably the easiest (and cheapest) thing to do would be to take a ferry over to Spain proper to Malaga (a few hours all in all) then fly to the Canaries from there. Air Europa used to have some good offers on those routes, but that's going back a bit now. Tenerife and Gran Canaria have the two busiest airports in the Canaries and cheapest fares to and from.

erm...you' know the canary islands is kind of where the British unemployed go on holiday right?

needless to say the volcanic island* is worth the visit especially having your food cooked by lava, however its not the place you take longer than a day trip too (so set up base at one of the more populated islands and use ferry's)

*I haven't been there since I was like 15 okay :p

Unemployed go on holiday? Are they not on a permanent holiday? I would think one would have to have money to go on holiday. When I lived in the UK I don't remember the government program that gave free holidays to the Canary Islands for the unemployed.

Yeah the volcano park on Lanzarote is fun, but I'd advise against taking your whole holiday on that island. Well, unless drunk chavs is your thing.

Yeah, well I am sure we would go to many of the islands. Not going to stay in one spot that long. As far as drunken British I have seen my share.

I have vacationed in Spain and Portugal several times. Was even in Madeira about 8 years ago just north of the Canary Islands. Thought Madeira was nice, spent about 5 days there and lost my ass in the casino.
