We have truly become a pathetic people.
-----------

"The earliest episodes of Sesame Street are being made available on DVD, but the NYT notes Volumes 1 and 2 carry a rather strange warning: 'These early 'Sesame Street' episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today's preschool child.' So why are they unsuitable for toddlers in 2007? Well, in the parody 'Monsterpiece Theater,' Alistair Cookie — played by Cookie Monster — used to appear with a pipe, which he later gobbled. 'That modeled the wrong behavior,' explained a Sesame Street executive producer, adding that 'we might not be able to create a character like Oscar [the Grouch] now.'"

Hmmm I saw that episode. Hmmm a pipe sounds good right now!

Was my granddad correcting in thinking that TV will program people? Teach them how to exist in society? Or is it simply the psycobabelists have gone too far?
both

Are we seeing the end of creativity simply because it might offend somebody?

I was just told after reading this story to someone that the cookie monster now eats fruit and has cookies for desert.

Are we seeing the end of creativity simply because it might offend somebody?

Just some random thoughts on sunday......

Sadly most of the cartoons on in the 60's and 70's would be banned today because of our PC world. I use to watch "the little rascals" as a kid. If anyone know the character "Buckwheat" then you would know that program wouldn't make it out of conception today. As for Sesame street that was one of the tamest programs for kids out there. Even with "Oscar the Grouch".

If you think children don't imitate what they see on television, and model their behaviour on other characters, then you are a fucking idiot.

I grew up watching Seasame Street in the 80s, stopped watching around 1994. I turned out just fine! :D

I don't see how it's that bad. I've watched earlier clips.

I spent my child hood watching Homer Simpson, yet I'm not fat nor am I an alcoholic etc... They only imitate what they see if it is shown to be 'cool' or 'how you should act'. I don't think the cookie monster is presented in this way.

I have learned more from The Simpsons than I ever learned at school.

I'm joking, but just barely.

This presenting of things as "cool" is how people generally start smoking and doing drugs. :headbang:

Ok. So how many have dropped anvils on peoples heads? How many have eaten a pipe or a banjo?

Actually it was more about rebellion and doing what was wrong that attracted people to those activities.

If you can show kids started pipe smoking then I will concede.

This is stupid. Just because something is shown on TV does not mean that kids will imitate it.

I watched Sesame Street as a kid. I have never eaten a pipe. Nor have I lived in a garbage can, spoken to a six foot tall yellow bird, or believed that furry blue monsters can fly.

[satire]Dude this is the modern age, the age of insanity. In this day and age ridiculas laws that waste tax money to enforce and cause detrimental effects are passed, guys are expected to act like girls, people beleive in alien Gods and republicans think they're right.

We live in a truly trippy age.
