So Christmas is on its way and I can't seem to think of a gift for my boyfriend.
He has tons of horror movies on DVD already and he has a preference for zombie and gore movies. He hates these new remakes of Japanese kiddie horror.
So recommend a good horror movie and why you like it :D

See the "tons of horror movies on DVD already" sort of fucks it up right there, because he probably has the lot.

Are you looking for slasher, something terrifying or a mindfuck?
Terrifying or gruesome.
And there are a lot of movies he hasn't even seen because I'm in to them myself and we've talked about them plenty of times. I'm just asking for more opinions than my own.

Terrifying or gruesome.
I'll recommend "Seven" for the terrifying category but if you're into your movies you've probably seen it already. "Event Horizon" is pretty gruesome, but it's a terribly bad film. Movie gore tends to amuse rather that scare me, but this one was pretty nasty.

"Audition" would sort of be the best of both worlds. Certainly I found it possibly the 'most fucked up' movie I've ever come across.
"The ordeal" is a grim bleakly funny one, with a sort of almost arthouse take on movies like "Wrong Turn".....
"Funny Games" is a hard one to classify. Its not horror as such, but its not nice at all, at all.
"Sheitan" is one that I've heard spoken well of, and is quite recent, but I haven't seen it myself.

No doubt, I could reccomend The Thing or Re-Animater, but odds are he's seen them if he has a thing for horror.

I second The Thing. That made me not want to go to bed when I saw it as a kid and think a dog on my street was taken over.

An awesome classic. For that extra cinematic experience I watched it just before I opened my copy of the PS2 game sequel. Everything I saw in the game made a terrific amount of sense, and it referred a great deal to the movies which I would missed otherwise.

Also, if he doesn't already own it, Braindead (1992) a.k.a. Dead Alive. Make sure you get the unrated version, as they had to cut so much to make the "R" version palatable to censors that half the time you can't tell what's going on.
Best gore movie EVER.

Lets see:
Night of the living Dorks (spoof on the zombie genera)
Wicked Little Things (not all that good)
Grave Dancers (a ghost flick but if he likes Army of Darkness he'll probably like this too)
Umm... I sure there is more just can't think of them right now.
He's probably already got Shaun of the Dead. And Ghost Ship and Thirteen Ghosts. This is the entirety of my horror repertoire (excluding Jesus Camp, of course). I just saw the Doctor Who episode 'Blink', and I do recommend that to anyone who wants to get their pants scared off. I may never be able to take my eyes off a statue again.
Go with Event Horizon. It's got plenty of blood and gore and demonic stuff in it, it's sci-fi, and it has some story so it's not just an hour and a half fake snuff film.
DEAD ALIVE
is the most gruesome violent movie I have ever seen. Event Horizon is good too.

28 Weeks Later. Really great zombie movie. Either that or any of George Romero's films.

It's a bit lighter than most of what you're talking about, but Deep Rising is a good horror/action movie that flies under most people's radar. I won't insult your intelligence by saying it's a great film; but it IS one fun thrill ride, with some really horrific moments.

It is a cheap n cheerful classic really. I watched it by sheer fluke rather than intention (watched the TV fer once )and was pleasantly suprised.

28 Weeks Later. Really great zombie movie.
Or if you want a zombie film that won't make you want to leave your seat in sheer disgust (Honestly, how did that film ever get made, worst thing I've seen all year) go for 28 DAYS later.
I'll put back up on
- John Carpenter's The Thing
- Brain Dead
- The Shining

For newer movies I would recommend "Saw" and it's sequels. As for older movies, "Evil Speak", "Bogeyman", the first two "Hellraiser" movies, "Phantasm"
Speaking of which, I am about to watch "bogeyman" myself.
