why are people so mean today? (these days)

why are people so mean? (best answer wins a cookie)

this morning, I saw a lady driving with her laptop on her trunk and so I honked at her and tried to tell her before she got on the highway, and she flipped me off and drove away. I saw her laptop fall on the on-ramp, so I got it and found her number in her purse that also was on her trunk and called her, and she called the cops and told them I stole her things....

then, yesterday I was at the toy store and this kid was lost so I took him to customer service and they found his parents, but then the mom told me to "mind your own fucking business" and I was sad because I used to work at that toy store and I know creepy people hang around looking for lost kids, and she should have been happy that I tried to help, especially since she was outside smoking while he was playing alone in a store......(he was about 2)

and also, people are mean to me today/recently. Why is everyone so mean? I try to be a nice person.

You need a new option on the poll called " Because most people have shit for brains". I think that accruately describes the people you dealt with.

I'm still trying to figure out why you tried to give back the laptop. That woman was a grade- A ****. You should have either kept it, sold it, or smashed it and Fed Ex'd it back to her.

asked me if it was my laptop and if I had a right to have it, and when I explained what happened they told me that I would have a court date and to call this number to come in.

so I called the number and the chick that was there on Saturday told me to call Monday.

You should have just kept them. Yes, if I were absent minded enough to leave my laptop and bag on the trunk of my car and someone else came along to pick them up I'd want them to reunite me with my stuff. That's why I wouldn't be so much of an asshole when people tried to get my attention as to just flip them off on a reflex. That right there told you that this was a hostile person and that future contact was not going to result in anything good."

then, yesterday I was at the toy store and this kid was lost so I took him to customer service and they found his parents, but then the mom told me to "mind your own fucking business" and I was sad because I used to work at that toy store and I know creepy people hang around looking for lost kids, and she should have been happy that I tried to help, especially since she was outside smoking while he was playing alone in a store......(he was about 2)

You owe that woman an apology. A loud, public, and enthusiastically "sincere" apology. You should have said right there, "I'm sorry ma'am. I didn't realize that you were trying to get rid of him. I suppose it was presumptuous of me to think that lost children should be helped when their own parents won't do it."

An increase in alarmism and sensationalism about crime is causing more people to be paranoid and more suspicious of strangers.
Falevere
17-11-2007, 17:04
We live in a world that does not value to community. People are more suspicious and fearful these days. We have isolated ourselves completely from strangers and others.

I was downtown in my city a few month ago and this old guy walking with a younger man (perhaps his caretaker) stopped and told me I was lovely and had eyes like crystals...and you get the point. I thought he was jsut being an asshole, or just psycho. Later, at a bus station, he ended up comming in and pretty much said some really flattering comment to every women in there, young and old. It wasn't creepy, but ended up being kind of sweet. Yet, some of the women told him to quit it.

he replied "You think i'm crazy, but I just want to see people happy."

Sure, he might have been crazy, but in the end, he was just being a ncie guy. The people who try to help just get punished, I suppose.

I was originally planning to highlight examples of what I think the problem is in this thread. However, I've been given something of an overabundance of them.

People have lost faith in the human condition, and as a result, the prophecy that "people are mean" is self-fulfilling. When people think of others as untrustworthy, foolish, selfish or malicious, it is as a result that their own treatment of them will be exclusive and untrusting.

I think it's silly, but I ultimately think it's something they've just learned from other people, and thus something that can be reversed.
ClodFelter
17-11-2007, 17:45
Sometimes people's perspective on the real world is limited to what they see on the news.

Sometimes people feel that they deserve to be jerks because they can't get over something like being born short. When you go to the bookstore, every day there's more and more self help books that tell you how to act egotistical.

I think this thread actually sums up why people act mean, most of the time. I know very few people who are constantly awful to be around, but almost everyone I know will lash back if they feel someone is being mean to them. For example, by stealing the laptop, driving over it, or just deciding all people are aggressive idiots that you are better than.

I don't know the woman (obviously), but I'm guessing she wasn't having a good day. You honked at her, and she misinterpreted the honk as you being rude, so she felt entitled to flip you off. Then, when you collected her laptop, she was angry enough she accused you of stealing it.

It's entirely possible that this woman is an exception, someone who is just miserable 24/7, and meeting her is bad luck. But I think too many normally kind people don't "turn the other cheek," as you did; they aren't willing to overlook the rudeness or meanness of others and instead go on the defensive. In the end, it seems like everyone is mean. If we all acted the way Smunkee did, I don't think this would be a problem.

People are mean because people don't realize how lucky they are that you are so nice. there are time that I would find a credit/debit card in an ATM. I would turn those in to either the police/bank/or security.

same with wallets. Cell Phones etc.

being that Hindsight is 20/20. I would suggest the next time you turn in items to the police without opening them. then 1) that bitch could complain to the police and accuse them of theift. and 2) the officers would know you didn't open the items (no fingerprints on the inside) and they can back you up should that bitch complain that you stole something.

as for the kid. next time take the child to either store security or bring an employee to the child.

you know Smunk... after seeing some of these shows that test people "will someone stop me from yelling at this child?" "will someone confront me as I neglect this child?" I'm glad there are people like you who will still do the right thing even after confronting assholes like the ones you met.

I am speechless and dumbfounded at the behavior of those two idiots.

What kind of fool would flip you the bird and drive off when you try to tell her that her laptop and purse are sitting on her trunk while she's driving down the road, and then try to press charges against you when you try to track her down and return her things to her?

And the mom in the toy store: was she TRYING to get rid of her son, or something? What a heartless idiot!

With that said I will say this is why I don't go out of my way anymore to help people out. It's because of the odd times where it completely backfires and ends up being one big pain in the ass.

Obviously these individuals are despicable c***s and what is possibly worse, they are permitted to breed. Therefore, they will most likely issue forth more dreadful progeny to propagate their foolishness.

They are yet further examples of the type who have an enlarged conception of their own "rights" yet no compunction in trampling on those of others.

I hope your local law enforcement doesn't proceed any further with this idiocy. I'm heartened by the fact that you had the charity to return these people's belongings/offspring, yet appalled by their behaviour and that of the legal apparatus.

then, yesterday I was at the toy store and this kid was lost so I took him to customer service and they found his parents, but then the mom told me to "mind your own fucking business" and I was sad because I used to work at that toy store and I know creepy people hang around looking for lost kids, and she should have been happy that I tried to help, especially since she was outside smoking while he was playing alone in a store......(he was about 2)

People are mean in this day and age because of what Lillian Glass calls "social toxicity". Mankind has made an environment that makes the human creature heavily insecure so everyone deep down wants to lash out at whoever they can to compensate for the insecurity. And this behavior is contagious. So being around toxic people can eventually make you one of them. If you read the book "Toxic people" written by the good doctor it'll shed light on the subject of why so many people are mean bastards.

There are multiple reasons, excessive selfishness, bad diet, mankind has made an environment that makes humans in general insecure so people want to lash out, lefties encouraging people to disregard all moral values(ettiquete, manners, being nice, showing regard and concern for others) people not caring about others and only themselves, social backwardsness in general (I blame the west) and also social toxicity. (read Toxic People by Lillian Glass for more info) It's shocking how much that book applies to different situations, but then again it applies to any situation with a bastard trying to raise hell on people being a book about dealing with those people after all.

If you want my honest belief...

Well, to condense my belief down to the shortest possible statement- We live in a massive, sprawling industrial society today. Back in the old days, you really couldn't afford to be mean because you saw these people every day. But today, you can be a bitch to some one and never see them again. Actually, its quite convienent, to take out your bad mood on someone with little fear of reprocussions.
Also, something that I think is pecular to the US, that everyone here is dedicated to their own individuality. We always praise individuality at all costs, but could there actually be a negative side to it? The belief that you are the all important person and that if some else doesn't like that, then they just have to deal with it. Express yourself at all costs, even if it's really obnoxious and offends or even hurts other people...

Anyway, that's just my personal belief. Sorry about the police.:(

Sadly, I'm afraid I agree.

In Australia, keeping something you find on the street is technically theft: "theft by finding." But you have (IIRC) one working day to hand the thing in to the police before that applies, and in practice no-one ever hands money in. Well, perhaps if the wallet or bag obviously belongs to a kid ...

Smunkee, I wish there were more people like you around. Then my opinion of people (in general) would be higher.

Here here!

Smunkee, I'm sure your lawyer will give you proper advice, but my unqualified advice is to write down your own recollection of events in as much detail as possible, don't just rely on your memory 'cos you don't know how long it will take to get to court.

If it comes down to your word against hers it could be a bit of a gamble.

If there were any witnesses, make sure you can get in contact with them (ie know their names) ... I guess you aren't supposed to discuss the events with them. Ask you lawyer about that.

Hopefully that nasty piece of work will realize that her chances of getting her laptop replaced don't justify the court costs, and in any case she's probably just trying to make you sweat it for a while. She probably feels like a complete idiot and is taking it out on you because you're nice.

As to the other thing, bad parents are very very touchy about having their failings pointed out. Perhaps you rubbed her face in it when a hint would have done.

Some people are assholes, and even nice people have bad days. Don't let these events stop you doing the right thing when you next see a chance. Good on you!

So this explains why I, a fairly liberal person, found an ID card lying on the ground and immediately mailed it back to the owner? Why I spent sometimes hours on the phone trying to track down people who left important things (planners, paychecks, etc) at the store I worked at? Why I spend a goodly amount of time maintaining a web page and writing articles for our local SCA group? Because I'm selfish? Suuuure...

I'm mean most of the time simply because I can be. It's pretty much how I keep people from bothering me. Now I'm not the type of guy to simply attack or offend someone just because they are there. If you leave me the hell alone then I return that same behavior. It's when you decide to interfere in my life that I get mean. You know nothing about politics and just spout out some shit you saw on Leno and I let you get away with it once. You keep talking without supporting information and I'm not going to allow you to make the people involved in the conversation any more stupid and uninformed then they are already. Stupid people who follow the world less than US Weekly and think they can talk shop is a trigger. Keep talking bullshit and I'll put you in check with assertiveness. I care very little for your foolish pride because if the choice come down to you being embarrassed or poisoning the well, you are going to have to settle with your crushed ego. It also helps I care little of what those around me think.

Those who know me, I mean truly know me realize what a kind and compassionate person I am. They see my volunteer work and charity contributions as evidence of my good nature. They see my generosity when asked to lend a hand for what it is, true friendship. You see, I know who the hell I am and who I'm not, and so do they. They know that years of service to my church, my country, and my family have made me a little cynical. If you are a scam artist bull shit spewer I'm just the "mean" guy for you.

But how can anyone be mean to Smunkee. A lady who treats others with respect and has moral discipline beyond religious dogma should be treated as such. Atheist Smunkee and Christian fundie Smunkee are still the same minus the Jesus thing. Her morality never changes with her religious beliefs because she is honest to her core.

Well yes. We both want to use the word "good" but can't without attaching it to some more objectively defined condition. The word is broken, it will not stand as a noun any more.

Even as a pronoun, it's not strong enough to support "good person."

Language which isn't broken is ambiguous. We keep moving along, and what is certain is forgotten. It becomes an assumption.

The commonality of "good Christian" and "good atheist" is what we mean. We agree I think.

So much for the formal meaning.

Perhaps you mean "strangers are idiots" or perhaps "treat people as idiots until firm evidence is available to the contrary" ... but to follow this idea means that Smunkee should have flipped that silly woman off in return, then stolen the bag and laptop ... because that idiot woman refused her well-intentioned help, and "screw them" is the route to happiness.

Some bitch working a soap cart (they have these "dead sea products" that they import from Isreal. I think they even hire all isreali jews to work there, because they all have an Isreali-ish accent, when compared to my pal from Tel Aviv,) she says to us "Are you guys so horny that you have to give free hugs?"

I was extremely offended at this. But we both lied and said something to the effect of "No, ma'am, it's just that our church is sponsering this. You see, we are mormons, and we want to spread a little kindness and love to this world." (I am an atheist, and my friend only recently became mentally incapa-, I mean... religious).

In the case of the first woman, it could be that she was having a bad day or it could be that they are a self centered induvidual. Maybe they are a paranoid delusional who thinks the world is out to get them. Or they could be a sour heartless bitch who doesn't deserve to hold the mantel of human being and delights in souring the moods of all those around her, a lower lifeform who feeds off of the sorrow of others like a parasite and who revels in her self centered bitchiness. Her shallow state of mind being brought on by the immediate gratification state of the society we are forced to live in.

I guess it was always like that, maybe it's just more visible, of course I'm quite young but couldn't one of the older posters verify if people are actually getting more mean. That being said, those people really are assholes, move to somewhere nicer.

sorry for this of topic question, but why do you have a lawyer? I don't know anyone who has one, is that normal in America, because it hasn't been the first time I've seen it.

When you are accused of a crime and have a court date, it would behoove you to get in contact with a lawyer to protect you. Those who don't are often later called "guilty."

Might be safer to move out of the whole state. It's Oklahoma.

On the other hand, the loss of one more awesome person like Smunkee might make Oklahoma blacken and die.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

If she were to thrive elsewhere, I'd say they can go hang.

Oklahoma: DEFINITELY NOT OK

you better get yours fixed... cuz yours is broken.

Psssst, he's being ironic.

Carry on.

Isn't Oklahoma the state with the senator who said abortionists should be executed?

liberals lack moral values and try to force their lack of moral values on others because they believe for some crazy reason that moral values infringe on someone's right of self-expression and other rights even though disregard for moral values really hurts personal freedoms instead of promoting them.

That's got to be the biggest load of stinking cow by-product I've heard for a long, long time.

Despite the fact that it was delivered in ultramoralistic, condescending, liberal -bashing rhetoric, SL does have a point. With this sort of personal liberation comes the freedom to be a jackass, and it suprising how many people choose it.

It's not thinking sans groupthink. It's thinking sans caring about anyone else.

Right.... because it's the righties that want to put more funding into healthcare, education, welfare... you know.

As long as it's good for business, people should mind their own fucking business, but suggest that someone should have the freedom to decide what to do with their own personhood and OMG WTF NO MORALS!!!!

why are people so mean?

There is good and bad in everyone. If I look for the bad, I will find it and if I look for the good, I just might find that too. However, most of that depends and how I am on the inside. If I am okay with me, it is surprising how much good I see in those around me.

I am grateful today that I have a better awareness of self. If I wallow in self pity, and feed my ego, the world can be a very ugly place. It ain't worth it. Too much hate, anger, greed, etc. will make one spiritually sick.

Live life and enjoy it!! Pray for those less fortunate souls among us and go forward. God helps those that help themselves.

EUGH!

What a disgrace you are to even suggest this.

Well legal problems are expensive and to file false police reports against someone can incur significant costs and long-term problems.

It's reasonable to expect the person who fraudulently causes those problems not to be the one to pay for it and to face legal problems in return for her illegal actions.

clown/balloon artistry.

also, I do financial planning, but mostly I have to sue people to pay their bills rather than them suing me in that business.

Huh? How in the world does being a clown and balloon artist create the need for a lawyer on retainer?

What could they possibly sue you over?

What could they possibly think is going to be the profit in suing a clown? I suppose as a financial planner you're doing alright for yourself, but most clowns aren't exactly rolling in it. At least not figuratively.

Congratulations. I don't often find news that makes me question my understanding of the world. Most things make sense, even people involved with them don't. But a clown that needs a lawyer on retainer, my mind has been officially boggled.

mostly they threaten to sue, and my lawyer calls and talks to them and it goes away...

the most recent claim was that I "traumatized" their child's friend because he was afraid of clowns.......and they wanted their money back. I didn't traumatize the child btw, some kids don't like clowns, I found out, I stayed away from the kid, he came up to me later asked for a balloon I made him one, he popped it and screamed.

I have big mega clown insurance in case a kid like chews on a balloon and chokes and dies, but it only covers like major things, not random people wanting refunds.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Honestly, the kid was "traumatized" and scarred for life? And they wanted their money back? What asshats.

Lunatic Goofballs, did you get that? You need insurance before posting again!

"The aggrieved party claims that as a result of consuming a Lunatic Goofball post, he did roll around on the floor in a way which defendant should have anticipated, and consequent apon getting his head stuck in a normal piece of living-room furniture, sustained lasting and debilitating injuries to his neck. Aggrieved party is seeking ten million dollars in damages for loss of income, mental suffering and ongoing medical costs."

why are people so mean?

Because global warming and all that sort of stuff affects brains.

I'm not even kidding. I seriously think that it melts people's brains. Provided they had any to begin with. A friend of mine has reported people getting mad at him for absolutely no reason. We've decided he gives off a special electromagnetic or chemical field or some kind of shit like that that makes people preinclined to hate him. But after hearing this shit that people were giving you, I'm rethinking that and just saying that 90% of the people in the world today are callous and delusional bastards who have their heads up their asses.

Alternately, I blame society and/or the gnomes (or maybe a SOCIETY of Gnomes. Hmm...) ;)

Not so silly. I also believe that the colours you choose to wear, the way you wear your hair, etc, can influence people without them really being aware of it.

Red for instance, is a good colour when you really are on top of the world and cheering people up ... but it can get you in trouble, and it's not a good idea to wear it to try to cheer yourself up. Likewise bright yellow.

Purple is a pretty dangerous colour, too. It can be taken almost as mockery, it's not a "serious" colour.

Earthy colours (dull greens, greys, even -horrors- beige) make one a small target.

A strong blue is a colour of authority. If you've really got the authority, it's a good choice to keep people from challenging it.

This might all sound rather crazy ... but I'd bet money that Smunkee's car is red, or at least some bright colour.

Well, there's mean people everywhere and I don't think you could deny that there have always been mean people, it's just not something new. I guess some people are mean because they are dissatisfied with life, others because some were mean to them, some because it is the only way for them to survive, others because it makes them money, some because of genetics, some because of the way they were raised, some because of the way they view themselves, some because of the society around them, some because they are ignorant, some because they are part of a crowd, and probably a ton of other reasons.

Just a question. How does tan or brown effect people?

Just a question. How does tan or brown effect people?

I left that out on purpose, though a lot of people wear those colours. I think they affect different people differently ... they're pretty safe if they tend towards grey rather than red.

Black and white, because they aren't really colours, don't do anything at all.

There's probably a formal theory about the "meaning" of colours, if you're interested.

Jislaaikit, I'm glad I live in SAfrica.

I mean, sure we're skittish of strangers & suspicious, but we also have a great sense of community even with people we dunt know. Quite probably because we're used to having to stand together against hardships, or maybe because we know that if we haven't already been in a similar situation we will at some point.
Either way, this country never ceases to amaze me.
One day you'll be thinking the whole place is against you and everything's shit, then someone you've never even seen before will help you out. It's Awesome.
