SYDNEY (AFP) - Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho" greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was reported Thursday.

Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.

One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US slang term for prostitute.

"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free 2B Kids.

"We are talking about little kids who do not understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.

"Leave Santa alone."

A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of the individual Santa himself.

I was very angry when I heard about this the other day, it's stupid, "ha ha ha" means something completely different, kids shouldn't know that meaning of ho anyway and it's AMERICAN SLANG.

It's exactly the same story, yes. Look at the two articles. One about Australia, the other about that Australian situation's repercussions in New Zealand. "Offensive to women" was simply an argument used alongside "scary to children".

Jesus H. Christ, what the fuck is next with this? First Santa has to drop weight, and now he's frightening children and offending women? Wouldn't say it's a War on Christmas. More a War on Santa. Think about it, what's the biggest obstacle to ReChristifying Christmas? Santa. Make Santa a hot-button issue, force him out of the picture, and the path is clear to making sure Christmas is back to being a boring, present-free event.

As for the slang prostitute question... Someone deserves to be smacked for even thinking of it, and deserves to loose their job for saying it out loud as anything other than a joke at the Christmas party. And even then, they have to have been drunk.
