Damn hit and runs

So tonight, while getting out of my car to go into Wal-Mart to buy some products, I noticed that someone has damaged the back end of my car. The trunk door that goes down the back is damaged, so is the bumper and I noticed this tonight, so I think it happened earlier today when I was at the airport to go fly.

What bugs me about this is not the fact that my car is damaged, I'm not a car guy, all I need in a car is that it has A/C, heat, CD player (or MP3), and that it can run without much maintenance. To me, a car is just something to get me from point A to B. Now damage an aircraft that I personally own, and they'll be Hell to pay. However, what bugs me about this is the fact that it's a hit and run, that the idiot didn't even have the damn common decency to at least leave a damn note with his/her insurance information on it so that the damage can get repaired.

Luckily for me, the airport that I fly out of has cameras everywhere, so the hit and run may be caught on camera and if it was, I could find out who did this and get to the bottom of this.

So has anyone else been in a hit and run, how bad was your car damaged, and what did you do to remedy the problem?

My old roommate got rear-ended and the dude bailed. When he told me about it he said, "But it's alright, I got his license plate."

"You were able to write it down?"

"No," and he pulled out a license plate, "I got his license plate. It fell off his car when he hit me."

Not as much came of it as we would have liked, but it was an amusing moment.

Well something bigger than an 1996 Acura Integra hit me. Five bucks says it was an SUV.

Think of it this way Wilgrove, did this person have a fiscal incentive to stay behind, apologize to you, and pay damages?

For him it was a 70s Camaro (the hit and runner) vs. a '75 Porsche 914. Did the poor thing in, unfortunately...

He did have a legal one, in the state of North Carolina hit and runs are illegal. So now he has to not only pay for damage, but also pay for court fees, lawyer fees, etc. So I would say yes he did, because if he at least left a note, it would've cost less to simply pay the damage, than to have this dragged to court.

Stopped reading at "Wal-Mart". Serves ya right, ya Godless commie/fascist/chinese supporting consumer!

Just kidding, Nah, could you imagine?!:D I could never stay mad at you, fellow Ron Paul supporter.;)

Hey not my fault they sell crap so cheap. I like to buy my stuff the cheapest price possible. :p

So you're ok with paying more for the same product that you can get at Wal-Mart for more than half? hehe, I know I know. ;)

Funny phone conversation from the other week between a buddy and I from work (names witheld of course):
Edit - might as well add, I was in the vehicle doing the hit and running -

I start off something like this, "So you coming out to the bar tonight?"
Buddy goes, "I dunno, my woman is mad at me, I should probably..."
"Holy shit! Retard just smoked a quad!"
"What"
"Retard just punted a quad across the parking lot!"
"No way!"
"Totally! He was doing like 60 km/h, sideways, behind the old bar and just nailed this guys quad!"
"Whose quad?"
"I dunno, we didn't stick around to find out."
"Holy shit."
"No shit.... well see ya later buddy."
To Retard and Cookie in the front seat, "Yea, so if the cops pull us over, I've been passed out for the last hour or so..."

In the end though Retard did meet up with the owner of the quad and they've worked out replacing whatever was broken. Funny stuff, and Retard still isn't living this one down.

In all honesty, I do try not to shop at Wal-Mart...sometimes I cave, I admit, but I really try not to. I hate Wal-Mart. I am fortunate to not have money problems at the moment, so I can afford to pay a bit extra so I don't have to support Wal-Mart...but I do understand that I am very fortunate and not everyone has the same luxury as me....fuckin' Wal-Mart.....

Go fellow Ron Paul supporter!;)

*snip creepy secret message*

Here's what you do. For every dollar's worth of goods you buy there, steal fifty cents worth. That's easily enough to cover their profit margin: you end up with more stuff for less money and your conscience is clear.

Don't get caught ... well duh, I don't have to tell you that, do I? :p

I don't drive a car and never have, but I'll try to contribute in the spirit of the thread.

In a certain Sydney railway station, I'd leant my bike on the front shelf of a small newsagents and was inside buying a drink, when the shopkeeper suddenly pointed over my shoulder and said "your bike! your bike!"

Some scumbag had my decrepit old bike over his shoulder and was starting down the stairs to ground level. I damn nearly got ahold of the back wheel as we got to the bottom. We both took the stairs three at a time but I gained on him because ... well, he was carrying a bicycle.

Then he leaps on the bike, the gears miraculously don't jam, and he looks back just once to give me the finger, and rides off along the big road there. Doesn't look back.

Big mistake, because this old freak loves his bicycle and won't give up just because he's on foot. Lanky junky guy pedals leisurely off, enraged freak chases him on foot, losing ground steadily. Barely rational enough not to shout insults and put junky to earnest flight.

Then these two angelic rough-nuts in a cruddy car cruise up beside me and the passenger asks "is that your bike?" and "get in, we'll catch him."

Well, we did, though the back wheel got badly warped where we ... *cough* ... rammed him. My two saviours wanted to beat the crap out of the guy and were quite disgusted when I didn't even want to hand him to the police.

I've still got the bike, the back wheel is still cactus, and I'm happy with the outcome. That lanky junky sure wanted his mommy just then, I'll remember the expression on his face 'til the day I die. "Waaa, can't I do anything right?"

Yeah, not relevant I know. I should get out more ...

Does Wal-Mart have no competition in the US? Canada has Real Canadian SuperStore which attempts to go toe-to-toe on price with Wal-Mart. Their selections do not overlap entirely, but there is overlap (SuperStore has a grocery store, Wal-Mart has a much larger electronics section, both offer a respectable clothing line, a complete housewares section, and shitty customer service).

I hit & run all the time. It's the best way to avoid a double play. I'd still never shop at Walmart, though.

1. I occasionally shop at Wal-Mart. They aren't as bad as everyone says they are, and they do provide jobs.

2. I've never been involved in a hit and run, but an old roommate was. She had to go home for some reason and was backing her Jeep Comanche out of the parking space (I was watching out the window at the time). The Jeep was new and she wasn't used to it, so she backed into a car parked on the other side of the lot. She got out of her car, stared at the other car for a full minute and, when no one came out to confront her, got back into her car and took off. The damage to the other car wasn't significant, but she really disappointed me when she decided to bail on her responsibility. I let her know what I thought about it when she got back and she finally did go leave a note on the car.

3. The closest I've come personally was when I was waiting for my daughter in the parking lot of a local mall. A car full of Muslim (and before you ask how I know they were Muslim, they were wearing the headdresses of Muslim women) women drove up beside me and parked. When they got out, one of them slammed the side of my car with the door (I'm sitting there in my 6-year old Ford and the idiot is slamming the door of her 6 month old Mercedes into my car!). She looked straight at me, shrugged and walked off with her friends.

lol, I'm not sure why but that sentence struck me as hilarious. "Products" is just such an ambiguous word, but at the same time it seems extremely obvious that is why you were there.

When a guy says he is buying "products", it usually means he's picking up some feminine hygiene items for his girlfrend.

Sadly, yes. When I was 17 I had saved up enough money to buy a 79 Camaro, and it was the first night I had driven it. I parked it parallel with the street in the city's "entertainment district" while my friends and I were drinking illegally (yeah, I know)... anyway, when we came out at 2am there was my car....crushed. A police officer was waiting, apparently some drunk driver had side swiped the whole line of cars.....mine got about the worst of it, he bent the frame. I called my cousin to tow it, sold it for scrap and cried for 10 years.

Also, autumn before last I was getting out of my car, had one leg on the ground and the other in the car with the door slightly opened, leaned into the back to grab my purse and this bitch next to me opens her door wide and fast and slammed mine into my leg.....I had a huge bruise. She didn't even check to see if I was okay, she just flipped me off and went into the store......of course nobody was there to keep me in check so I followed her in and made a scene. She ended up having to pay for me to go to the ER and get x-rayed because the manager of the store was pretty sure she broke my leg.

Even if the person didn't have a fiscal incentive to stay there, the person has a legal and financial responsibility (seeing as that person is the one that damaged Wilgrove's property). Now the person (if they're caught, which I hope they are) will face criminal charges (leaving the scene of an accident) as well as financial responsibility (for the cost of repairs).

Here's a funny hit and run story. I was asleep in my apartment (I worked nights at the time), it was around 6:30 pm, and it was dark out. I got woken up by the sound of screeching tires, then heard a loud bang, then a slight pause, followed by more screeching tires. I got up, got dressed, and went outside to check on my truck, because it had been parked on the street that night. I got out there to find about 7 people already standing where the person had impacted the parked cars (luckily my truck was missed). Then I noticed a bumper (complete with license plate still on it) lying in the road. One of the people in the crowd moved it out of the street, and we stood there talking for a few minutes. About 5-10 minutes after the hit and run, the car came by (apparently the driver noticed that he was missing his bumper and license plate). He saw all of us standing by the side of the road and took off. About 10 minutes after that, the first cop arrived. He started to run the plate that was left at the scene, when the car came back again. It turns out that the kid that was driving it was 16, just got his license the day or two before, and panicked when he hit the parked cars (he had a friend in the car that he was showing off to, and that's why he lost control). When his father noticed the damage though, he brought his son back so the kid could face what he'd done (and the father was less than happy that the son left the scene). That's when I left to get some more sleep. From what I'd heard from my neighbors though, it all got worked out in the end.

I was in a car that was a target in a hit and run.

We were on a narrow side street (reduced to one lane because on one side there were cars parked and on the other, the same thing), when we had to stop to yield to oncoming traffic. My dad figured the standard thing to do was to let one car in and then he would go, you know, right of way. Of course, he came to regret it right away as some asshole in a car behind the one my dad let pass barreled through, causing the car we were in to swerve to the side, and guess which side it was? The passenger side.

To make matters worse, the car we were in hit a parked car. There wasn't too much damage to the passenger side but the mirror was very loose. My dad stopped and tried to find the owner of the car, who he spoke to and after two minutes was told not to worry about it because the owner of the car didn't care about the damage because it was an old piece of crap.

But the driver who came through, forcing us over didn't bother to stop at all and just kept on driving.

Yay, the airport does have Security camera trained on the front parking lot where I was parked at. Hopefully the camera caught something and I can track down who did the damage.

I've been on both ends of this kind of thing. Someone dented my car while pulling out of a driveway. I never found out who.

The time I hit another car occured before I had a license. My parents had been teaching me to drive (I had a permit), and one day, my dad went into a store alone, leaving me to practice my parking. While backing up, I bumped another car. I don't count it as an actual hit-and-run, since there was no visible damage. I was traveling at 1mph, tops, and all the other car did was shift on its suspension.

Aren't hit and runs illegal? Fleeing the scene of an accident or something like that? Not getting jail time seems like a pretty good incentive to me.

Wilgrove, stop being a libertarian already. You're making so much progress...don't stop now!

Also, as for hit and runs...not really. The closest to a hit and run would be when some people used a baseball bat to smash out the back window of our van. It was broken for a couple months during the WINTER WHILE WE WERE STILL LIVING AT AUNT LINDA'S SO WE STILL HAD TO DRIVE FOR AN HOUR IN THE MORNING EVERY DAY TO GET TO SCHOOL! :headbang: It was like the climax of everything that had gone wrong for our family during that time.
