Which, of course, begs the question as to what exactly American or Canadian "blood lineage" would be. Other than Native American/First Nation, of course.

There’s problems both ways.

If you say nationality is where you are born then folks like my father, who was born in Northern Rhodesia (modern-day Zambia) and moved away when he was three, are in a funny position. Sticking with the example of my dad, his parents are both Scottish, and he has lived in Scotland for the vast majority of his life. Does his birth in what is now Zambia make him Zambian? Or, as Zambia didn’t exist when he was born, is he Rhodesian?

OTOH, if we say nationality is where your parents and other family come from, then folks whose parents, grandparents, etc., moved around are also in a funny position; potentially multiple nationalities appear, though states won’t legally recognise this.

Highlight’s the weirdness of nation-states and nationality in the first place.

Oh, we're playing the ancestry game. Well, in that case, I'm a Canadian of mixed english/scots/french descent (with a wacky irishman lurking around in the family branches).

All of my great-grandparents were off the boat, with the exception of the french-canadian side which can trace back to a Parisian emigrating in the late 19th century.

I'm also very distantly related to Rene Levesque. (You may now pelt me with rotten fruit.)

if you mean blood lineage, supposedly every human on earth is ultimately decended from 20,000 in auldivoi!

so where in the world we were individually born don't make diddly.

besides, i don't believe in nationality anyway. ethnicity in the sense of indiginous culture is another matter.

my mother's side comes by way eastern european jews over a century ago and my father's was a mix of highland scotts, hessian, and wee bit of onondagwa for good measure.

country of birth and residence (as was that of both of my pair-ants), under educated snakes of friggin a-merry-kkay.

from memory, my ancestry is mostly Scottish and English. there's an appreciable amount of French in there too, at least compared to anything Else.

if you trace that further back it probably ends up in Germany and Italy. romans and Saxons and all.

honestly, though, there comes a point where it becomes ridiculous, so, I'm 'ethnically European' 'of British descent' and a New Zealander by birth and allegiance. [which isn't to say i'm loyal to the government. ... you think the USA's bad? take a close look at NZ's government sometime. it's a lot of the same shit... but the people doing it are actually Intelligent :S ... be afraid. i'll stop before i get into another rant on the subject.]

Nationality is in most cases determined by that of your parents. As far as I know, only in the US it matters where you were born, elsewhere it's fairly irrelevant...

It depends on the nationality. As I understand it you can't have dual Polish citizenship(i.e, you can't be a citizen of Poland if you're a citizen of anywhere else), but I'm not sure exactly how that works.

Being a Michigander I'm almost Canadian. For example, I go to Tim Horton's every morning, a very Canadian thing to do, but I don't get a double-double, which isn't very Canadian.

Anyway, I'm American and my ancestors were German, English, Irish and Ojibwe, in that order.

Quick question, what if you were born in international waters? I wasn't, but still, what if?

There was a girl in my home town who couldn't get a birth certificate or passport.

She was born on an aircraft

Mother british
Father Irish - parents not married
Plane indonesian
Airspace Austalian

I think rules have changed but at that time if your mother was British but your father wasn't and you were born outside the UK you couldn't get British nationality

She couldn't have Irish because she was born outside Ireland and her parents were not married

She could get Indonesian citizenship if she went to live there and learned Indonesian language and culture

The Australians basically said she had nothing to do with them

I have n idea what happened in the end - i suppose she became British by naturalisation.

Yeah, because all of Europe is de-gunned.
