Hey everybody!

(Just to announce before hand, this is about the National Forensics League.)

So, is anyone here involved in competitive debate? What do you think about it? Do you debate LD or CX? Got any nice evidence/cards? Got any tips for novi like myself?

This is basically a thread to talk about debate. I only just started this year, and I'm really enjoying it right now. So, does NSG have a debate community?

We actively discourage any form of debate here.

Jolt clearly approves of my opinion by placing it first - yay!

EDIT: Damn you Bann-ed - get out of my thread!

Damn timewarpers!

By debaters, I meant competitive debaters (not trying to demean anyone, but NSG debate is different from debating in real life).

There's a lot of masterful debating here, sometimes I think this forum is filled with master debaters - given a competitive session, I think many here think that they'll come first.

EDIT: Seriously Bann-ed - it's not funny anymore!

Not from General, but I do do Lincoln-Douglas. ;)

I earned the triple ruby but don't wear it on my sleeve.

That's cool, LD's not too popular at my school (Debate in general isn't that popular, everyone last year was a stoner), but I don't think it's that bad. I kind of picked CX because it's less formal, but I think LD gets some awesome topics.

Nice! How many points do you need for a ruby anyway?

I think I'm officially part of the NFL, assuming its a position you get to keep for life. I never got enough points for gems, though.

I find formal debating too constrained to enjoy, I prefer loose argument.

I also find it a little too stylized, people can come across as rather smug whenever I've watched formal debates - however, this may be because I've only seen them in England, where I'm not sure there's a great passion for debating and therefore it becomes an exercise in 'being clever' over a logical battle.

250 per ruby.

There's a lot more technical considerations for sure. But once you know what they are, it's really not so bad. By smug you mean arrogant right? If that's what you mean, than I will say that although there are some arrogant teams in the circuits, most people are pretty nice and have good sportsmanship.

I really don't mind loose argument either though, I guess I just like arguing with people.

I find the opposite to be true: in a formal debate, people have to depend less on personal anecdotes, witty repertoire, or personal good looks* to succeed.

This isn't really a factor on NSG anyway. However, let's just say that if I had an avatar, The Cat-Tribes quiver every time he even thought about correcting my spelling. I am that convincing in my handsomeness.

Yeah, that's why I wonder if it's just different in the UK compared to the US, which has more of a tradition for formal debate structures as far as I know.

...and it may just be the one's I've seen, where people seem to 'act' debating rather than really put thought into it.

I'd be curious to see a good debate under formal terms - I'd never heard of LD or CX debates, though I've looked them up now.

I think I have a Quint Ruby pin floating around somewhere. I haven't worn it since college debate competitions.

Hey people!

On a semi-related topic, have any of you guys seen this (http://debate.com)?

I find it rather interesting, but too often people don't really read the arguments being presented, and just use it as an opinion poll.

Anyways, you guys should check out some of my arguments under "zarul".

And if anybody else is involved on the site, let me know so I can read some of your debates!
