So they don't have move to France because, supposedly, doing homework and having to go a few miles to get to school violates their rights

I take it that every British child has a right to a "key"???

Did you know you Brits have a right to a good night's sleep as well? It's true, look it up.

And gosh, those kids sure whined their way out of THAT one.

It sounds like it from the article, yes.

Wait, I'm confused, kids can't have their own key in france?

Of course they can, if their parents give them one. I had a key as a kid.

Didn't they ask the children who they wanted to stay with previously?

A US judge would have probably told them to suck it up and go back to France with their mom. US judges tend to side with the custodial parents in most cases.

Oh, Jesus. We're giving children a voice in their futures. We're fucked!

But unless they are 16 or 17 they don't have the capacity to know what's best for their futures. That's why society gives parents the right to tell them what to do. It's for kids' own good.

It seems the courts assigned custody to the mother. They could ask the children but in most cases that's not enough. If the kid's chosen parent doesn't have the ability to properly care for them, then the courts will assign custody to the parent the children don't want to go with.

Example:
The kids like dad and want to stay with him. But dad is a homeless bum. Then the judge assigns custody to mean old mom who actually has a job and can actually care for the kids.

Maybe the parents were spoiled as children and as such, don't have the capacity to be parents??

Well, I don't know how much homework you had to do, but reading clearly wasn't on the curriculum. It doesn't say anything about having to do no homework; it may refer to having to do less homework, but that's not the same thing.

Perhaps you would prefer this (http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/law/article2827739.ece)less sensationalist article on the matter, which, incidentally, clearly shows that the 'less homework' remark are the boys own words.

From what I read, this had less to do with homework and more to do with two kids who lived in a country they found too foreign for them to live and succeed in. I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to move to France or Canada or Mexico or any other country. Once you lived one way for years and years, it's very difficult to assimilate enough to truly thrive.

Once you lived one way for years and years, it's very difficult to assimilate enough to truly thrive.Well, I totally disagree... I spent a year in Munich after growing up for 19 years in Berlin, and Bavaria (where Munich is) is like a whole different country (complete with its own language, culture, and conservative party), and yet I felt right at home. A year ago, I did a semester abroad in Virginia, and felt right at home there too.
