Why Purse Dogs Should Go

Florida Dog Owners Fear Flying Menace

GULF BREEZE, Fla. —

Move over coyotes. Some northwest Florida residents are worried because they believe hawks are swooping down from the sky and attacking their small dogs.

Gulf Breeze residents have seen their pets fall victim to coyotes before, and the city even sets traps to control their population.

Martha Powers said she began yelling after seeing a large bird flying down toward her dog. The bird turned away. And Caren Gardner believes that her 3-pound Pomeranian was taken by a hawk last year 'within minutes' after she let her out to play.

Local veterinarians don't believe pet owners should be too worried about birds flying off with their pets because the problem isn't all that common.

Doctor Lorrie Rhodus from the Animal Medical Center said she has seen the problem before. She said that three years ago a woman brought in a dog that had been attacked by a hawk.

The owner said the small dog was probably too heavy for the bird to handle, and it dropped the canine. The dog was severly injured and had to undergo surgery, Rhodus said.

There was an owl that would hang out near my backyard when I was a teenager that I always thought was eying my cats, but he never made a move. As much as I'd like to believe my cats would have wrecked shop on him if he had, it probably would have ended badly for the cats...

Not related-I saw not to long ago someone walking with their dog in an enclosed stroller. What purpose does this serve?

My friend Tyler was nearly carried off by an eagle as a baby. I guess he was to heavy or something, because the eagle grabbed him, but didn't take him.

Why Purse Dogs Should Go? Because most self respecting dogs carry wallets instead?

While hawks and coyotes are threats to purse dogs, their biggest fear should be my cat Noir. :)

Ok, I have to tell this story, During one of the Summer Vacations that I would take with my family, we went to go see the historic town Charleston, SC. While we were walking along the sidewalk, we saw this big guy walking this little bitty chihuahua. We didn't even pass by him when my dad and I started snickering, and once we were passed him, we just laughed. I think we embarrassed our mom.

Ahh fun.

smaller dogs, or "rat dogs" as i like to call them, have THE MOST attitude of all animals. they also have the lowest ammount of courage, as well as the loudest and most annoying bark.

small dogs like that are for people that do not have the cash to pay for a real dog, nor do they have the patience to look after a real dog.

in addition, those dogs are for people that want a puppy for the duration of the dog's life. so, they buy a dog that will remain small and fluffy untill it dies.

instead of a small rat dog, just go buy a freaking cat.

Considering all of that was incredibly stupid, I don't think you are allowed to tell people what to buy.

Well, many of your so-called purse dogs started out as hunting dogs (Dachshunds, and many terriers) that could go to ground right after the burrowers they were hunting. To be honest, I would sooner deal with a big dog than a little -- I have found that the little ones can tend toward downright lunatic viciousness all out of proportion to their size, for those of you considering them 'cowardly', and big ones tending toward, "Yeah, I could rip your head off and we both know it. Leave me alone or get me a beer."

I should think the solution would be, "Much as you should not let a three-year old child run around unsupervised, don't leave your dog unsupervised."

Really. There are plenty of cases of dog theft, too, where household pets end up in labs. Also, given the number of dangerous wildlife in Florida (coral snakes, rattlers, alligators in addition to hawks), leaving a small pet or small child outside is idiotic bordering on endangerment.

people on Surf Boards look like seals to sharks...

a small dog looks like a large rodent to a hawk...

yeah. Raise Bigger Dogs.

EDIT: I always thought those small dogs were not supposed to be let loose outside but were mainly bred to be 'indoor' dogs...

I think they're talking about the really small dogs. The ones that you see people carrying around in a purse or with one hand.

Hawks need to eat too...
Probably moreso than those inbred little things which contribute nothing of value to the environment, except the occasional snack.
Not that I want anyone's dog to be eaten however.

I understand what they are talking about. But if you're REALLY worried that something might get at your pet, DON'T LEAVE IT OUTSIDE.

that's why I don't leave my pets alone outside.

well that and my pets are a couple of crayfish, so I don't leave them alone outside... :p

If my cats (which are kind of big) are bigger than your dog, then your dog is too small and should be disposed of accordingly and replaced with a new dog.

I almost had an "incident" with 2 Golden Retrievers yesterday. The problem wasn't that they were mean (exactly the opposite, actually). The problem was they liked to jump, and I was carrying 3 parcels at the time (they almost knocked me over in their attempt to get me to play with them).

I still miss my dog Buddy. Budy was a German Shepard/Labrador mix. He was about the best (non human) friend I could have asked for, growing up.

I love small dogs... my cousin has a cute black one that significantly reduced my general distaste for domesticated canines.

As a young child I loathed big dogs; they scared me to death, little pathetic coward that I was. I'm not afraid of them anymore (my pathetic cowardice applies to other things now), but the memory still poisons my opinion somewhat.

Really, I'm just hoping that somebody will breed dogs big enough and properly structured to act as mounts. Imagine jousting on that!

"What kind of steed is that?"
"One that will eat yours for dinner if you aren't skilled enough. Oh, and is it true that you crack when facing deadly situations?"

I always found the proportion of a "dog" is in direct inversion of the owner -- especially women.
