Poetry!

i'm fairly new to this whole poetry business, and i just slammed my first poem at my school today. if you havnt ever been to a poetry slam, i highly suggest attending one immediately.

this thread is about the weird poetry.

i will admit that i have heard some REALLY great poetry, some from fellow high-schoolers. but there is poetry out there that is quite strange.

some that doesnt even make sense, or that just sounds like a personal monolouge of a normal day.

for example:
"i ate an orange.
i shared it with bobby and eric.
i had a half, and each of my friends had a quarter.
it was good."

i just dont see the poetry in this.....
if any old words thrown together can be poetry, then how is poetry really defined? or are things like this simply not poetry?

That poem is amazing. Almost on par with William Carlos Williams, in fact.

If it's by Lord Byron, it's amazing. That's about the end of the discussion.

i do not remember who it was by, and it isnt the exact text... just what i could remember.

why does it being written by a famous poet effect the nautre of it?

lets say i wrote this:

"i went to school today.
i didnt get to have lunch.
so i ate after school.
now i'm just fine."

now, both poems have the same basic structure, why do you like the famous poem more?
