As the food chain goes:
casuals->noobs->average->skilled/experienced->hardcore->super hardcore

In video gaming, I'm skilled/experienced, though I might just barely be average on internet usage. The chain also goes in order from largest to smallest, not just from those that get eaten by everything to those that eat everything.

Noobs are known to be mostly solitary, though it's not uncommon for noobs to travel in packs. After the hardcore/super hardcore, noobs are the most aggressive and defensive. They are known to make heavy use of 1337 talk, though that might just be them sitting on their keyboards because even their 1337 grammar is poor at best.

Casuals come in two varieties: the curious and those who really want to use the internets and games. Both groups can be divided two groups: solitary and pack. It's not uncommon for the pack variety to use more experienced whatevers for protection and guidence.

Noobs come in two varieties: standard and permanoob. Standard noobs don't remain noobs for long and are just noobs from inexperience while permanoobs remain noobs for longer. It's not unusual for a permanoob to remain a permanoob for well over a decade of noobishness.

Hope this clarifies what a noob is. Can't describe a noob without describing its prey and predators.

I'm trying to figure out if I am a noob.... I have been here a while, but I have been banned from the forum twice, so this is my first day of posting since I was last banned... does that mean I have to start over being a noob again? How many times do I have to call liberals a bunch of 'godless heathen scumbags' before they stop allowing me to be a noob? THAT is the question!

Meh, I guess I could be considered a noob. At least to this forum. I've been playing NationStates for a while, but I'm a pretty good RPer. I spend a lot of times on other forums so I have experience with that. When it comes to noob there are a couple things to look out for

1. Horrid grammar and spelling. (ie. leik i dunt no wut to du guyz)
2. Massive use of smilies. (ie. hai guyz i cnat figur sumthing out :headbang::sniper::mp5::D)*
3. Pretending like you know everything there is to know. (ie.
Noob:dud im so gud at tihs gaem
Pro: Yeah I can definitely tell.
Noob: gawd ur such a n00b ive bean playen tihs gaem fur leik six munths
Pro: It's only been out for two weeks...)

*There are a few exceptions. Klowny, on Gamewinners used smilies in many different and very awesome ways.

Newbie is someone who is new at something. n00b is someone who's completely incapable of learning, regardless of how long they've been at it. While you will run into newbies at the first levels of any game, you'll run into n00bs for fuckin ever!

So what is with noobs ?

Capitalization, spell-check and doing more observation than speaking for a little while always help erase Newbie status quickly. Also, unless you're actually RP-ing a character different than your nation's usual spokes...uh...being (must be politically correct!), you needn't sign your name on your own posts (that's what signatures are for -- look it up under "User CP").

I'm trying to figure out if I am a noob.... I'm not entirely sure, but giving up deliberately breaking forum rules in the face of Mod warnings will help.

Newbie is someone who is new at something. n00b is someone who's completely incapable of learning, regardless of how long they've been at it. While you will run into newbies at the first levels of any game, you'll run into n00bs for fuckin ever!

Now THAT's a good definition. Newbie versus n00b. Good bit of separation there.

Here are some completely true made-up facts about noobs.

For millenia, there were two planets. One planet, Noobulon, was home to the noobs. The other planet, 1337oria, was home to the more 1337. They hated eachother enough to wage a bloody war against eachother. The noobs primary war strategy was flaming and poor grammar. The 1337 fought back with logic and bans....And mods. Lots and lots of mods.

Recently, both planets began colonising Earth. They chose Earth for its large recruitable population and its most valuable natural resource after pie and pointy objects: the internet. The internet was the ultimate resource. It was cheap, readibly available, renewable, and powerful. Half the internet has enough energy to destroy the entire universe.

The internet helped the noobs create the greatest bio-weapon after small pox, hippies, and country music: the troll.

That's all I have "discovered" on the topic.

Actually, the question is whether or not you will learn to stop name-calling and present arguments instead.

Well I used to call people n00bs back in the day, but then I realized just how stupidly condescending that is. The internet isn't some college fraternity with mandatory hazing, some "noobs" are actually very intelligent and profound, others aren't. Some veterans are just plan idiots who just have really high post counts on particular forum. So what I prescribe is just calling a spade a spade, or in other words call an idiot an idiot.

Sounds good to me. Spelling a word with two zeros isn't horribly intelligent, anyway.

This is a great thread. I now know that I am a newbie as this is my first post. I also know that as I have a basic understanding of sentence construction and spelling that I am not a n00b.
However the apparent pretentiousness of this post runs the risk of forcing me accross to permanent n00b status...
I shall tread cautiously in future.

the way to spot a noob is those that look for them. Those that can use a forum without calling out everyone they think is beneath them are those above the noob. Those that presist on looking for noob's are themselves noobs.

Yes, before you know they'll act as normal posters. And then it's impossible to distinguish anymore. Hell, even the mods could then be noobs without us knowing

N00bs are like green recruits sent in to reinforce the company. You don't want to make friends with them because they're likely to get killed in the next battle. They frequently blow themselves up with their own flame-thrower, step on a landmine or just blunder their way into an ambush.

It would appear the fact that you never, ever appear to learn the nature of ignorance regarding that particular attitude is the problem. Thusly, ever the n00b.

1337oria used to have many sugar mines that used noob-labor. The noobs escaped and reproduced like mad. They set up noobtopias everywhere. We must fight back against the noob menace.
