Slavery has been reinstated

On the campus of the University of Mary Washington, a poster was found showing a white man with his arm around a black man reading, "Slavery re-instated, catch yourself a good one."

The poster was on a community refrigerator in Jefferson Hall.

"Being concerned is a good word. I think quite concerned would be a better way to characterize it at this point. It doesn't mean at this point that I'm pointing fingers, better for us to have an idea of what's going on." Some students at the dorm said the situation was being blown out of proportion.

"There's been some displeasure on campus, but in all, I know both guys involved and they're both good guys, not racist and they didn't mean anything by it."

The African-American cleaning crew who found the poster, reportedly felt otherwise. One of the responsible students was quoted as saying, "That's their job, to clean up after us. My maid at home doesn't complain, so why should the cleaning ladies?"

ABC7/NewsChannel 8 was unable to reach the students involved, but the dean said he and his staff will talk to the students to determine if it's a racist act or just a bad prank.

So was this a bad joke or was this racism? Eh I could see how it could be a bad joke that would be considered racist, and it could mean that those who did this have racist views, or it could be that their sense of humor sucks. I know I would never pull something like this off, mainly because my old RA was black, and I respected him as a human being, so yea.

It was plainly just a joke, to say otherwise is absurd.

The nice thing about modern slavery would be Equal Opportunity. So I could take those two dipshits as slaves. :)

It really isn't. It's a photo from some basketball game with text added to it.

I suppose it could be some kind of social commentary on a bunch of white guys owning and trading a bunch of black guys that work in huge fields to make the white guys money.

But the black guys get a bunch of money too, so whatever.

Also, I'm not sure it's actually, of itself, a racist image...

It may help to know the context of this poster. It could be more easily recognized as topical humor if it's involving something that's a current affair either locally or nationally. If it is completely random, I can understand why some people would think it's racist, but only because people don't actually get the joke. The goal of comedy is to hold the mirror to up society and show people how absurd our lives are. "It's funny cause it's true" isn't a phrase for nothing. Sometimes the line can be very thin (see also: Sarah Silverman, Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Dave Chapelle, many other black comedians), but it's still clearly comedy.

It is obviously a joke, but it is also undeniably a racist joke.

In that it refers to slavery? sure, I guess. Or the wording, "catch yourself a good one"?

Tasteless, stupid and not really overly funny...I admit, there's at tinge of humor in it, but not too much.

I feel that the appropriate punishment should be that these two should be required to take a stroll in Anacostia, Virginia while wearing this image on their shirts. Let's see how that one works out.

*For those not in the know, Anacostia is a historically black community that has fallen under severely hard times. Recently, I had some of my friends merely ride a bus through there when a black woman got on the bus and started shouting about how they were "white sluts".

Both and more. But especially the second.

Sounds more to me like a different view of basketball and how these guys are basically slaves. They may think they have freedom but they can be traded on a whim of an owner.

It may not be a very good joke or very analogous to slavery but it is in no way offensive the way I see it.

 I couldn't think of any other major white comedians that have a similar style. Many major black comedians have a considerable amount of material focusing on white/black racial issues, which makes sense, because someone has to do it, and it's not quite acceptable for white comics.

Read the part where I say not very analogous. All I'm saying is that i see where they are coming from and if anything this is the opposite of racism.

It looks like a football game or something. This was an act of anonymous. The response is not suprising, when I posted a "Pool's Closed" sign on July 14 at a local pool I was charged with disorderly conduct and they said they were considering a terrorist threats charge. No joke. And it was just plain text, no graphics. Everything was dropped but it just shows that people have no sense of humor.

You know what this thread needs? Moar pooper and Rule 34.
