SNL is a show that has had its ups and downs over the last 32 or so years.

It has been the launching point of countless careers. At times it has been the funniest show on TV while at others (like now) it has been completely unwatchable.

What are your favorite moments and sketches during the long history of the show? Who are your favorite hosts, musical guests, and members of the "not ready for primetime players?"

My all time favorite cast member has to be Eddie Murphy. This show launched his career and he carried the entire show when he was on it.

Top 10 greatest sketches of all time:

10: Consumer Probe (Mainway Toys)
9: Motivational Speaker (Livin in a van down by the river)
8: Celebrity Jeopardy (suck on it Trebek)
7: Church Chat (Oh isn't that special)
6: Wayne's World (Schwing!)
5: The French Chef (Save the livah!"
4: Not Ready for Prime-Time Graveyard (Cause I'm a dancer! sort of sad to realize that Belushi was the first to die)
3: Buhwheat Sings (Once, Tice, Fee Tines a Mady)
2: Point-Counter/Point (Jane you ignorant slut!)
1: Mr Robinson's Neighborhood (Wanna see that dress now boys and girls?)

Yeah, when the REAL Janet Reno knocked down the wall like the cool-aid man in the final sketch. Awesomeness.

Hi Janet. Nice dress.

XD

I have to say though, my favorite skit was the "As The World Turns" Edition of the 2000 presidential campaign as the recount started.

ROFL I LOVE the Celebrity Jeopardy skits! Funniest stuff on SNL IMNSVHO! I love to see those "celebrities" give extraordinarily stupid answers to absurdly simple questions:
Trebek: This is the sound a doggy makes!
*Sean Connery rings in*
Trebek: Mr. Connery?
Connery: Moo!
Trebek: No!
Connery: Well that's the sound your mother made last night!

Or try this one:
Burt Reynolds (aka Turd Ferguson in this episode): "Yeah I'll take the condom thing for, uh, eight thousand."
Trebek: That's "Condiments". For four hundred. "This condiment is made from mustard seeds!"
*French Stewart rings in*
Stewart: The answer, of course, is onions, I'll take Condiments for 600.
Trebek: No!

In one episode there was a category called "A Petit Dejeuner", of which Trebek said, "That category is about French phrases, so let's just skip it."

Those skits are positively hilarious! They should make a DVD with nothing but those skits on it. One of them (the one where Burt Reynolds changes his name to Turd Ferguson) appears on the SNL Best of Will Ferrell DVD, but I want to see the others too.

The one that's burned into my brain is the Canteen Boy skit with Alec Baldwin and Adam Sandler.

Fred Garvin: Male Prostitute (Bill Murray's character goes into the bathroom to take a leak and after a couple of seconds, you hear this scream of pain as he urinates...classic.)

Bass-O-Matic (Aykroyd at his finest.)

Colon Blow (My favorite cast member will always be Phil Hartman.)

I would say my favorite Weekend Update anchor was Dennis Miller, right up until he turned into an asshole for money. So it's Tina Fey (who has the bonus of being HOT as well as savagely witty).

Bass-O-Matic may be the winner. Killer Bees are pretty good and so was Land Shark.

The other one that I think of at every bid review was the Change for a Dollar skit.

Bank Representative: We have been in this business a long time. With our experience, we're gonna have ideas for change combinations that probably haven't occurred to you. If you have a fifty-dollar bill, we can give you fifty singles. [ SUPER: "We can give you fifty singles" ] We can give you forty-nine singles and ten dimes. We can give you twenty-five twos. Come talk to us. [ SUPER: "We can give you twenty-five twos" ] We are not going to give you change that you don't want. If you come to us with a hundred-dollar bill, we're not going to give you two-thousand nickels.. [ SUPER: "We're not going to give you two thousand nickels" ] - unless that meets your particular change needs. We will give you.. the change.. equal to.. the amount of money.. that you want change for!

And Emily Litella was hilarious. "Never mind."

Coneheads.
I remember watching one Coneheads skit where Belushi and the woman playing his wife barely made it through the sketch without falling over laughing.

The SNL Dover Beach version...

The sea is calm to-night.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand;
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the A gaean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.

The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where LIVE, FROM NEW YORK, IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!

Well, I haven't watched much of this season yet (I have them on my DVR, though), but I'm not sure your correct about the show being unwatchable this year.

I have watched the season opener and thought it was pretty darn good. The 2007 douche bag awards had me crying. http://gawker.com/news/the-record-of-the-times/saturday-night-lives-2007-douchebag-awards-308182.php

Also, I'd say the late 80's early 90's cast was the best... with Carvy, Neelon, Hartman, Hooks, Jackson, etc... so much talent.

Colon Blow

Phil: "Colon Blow must be the highest fiber cereal on the market!"
Announcer: "Not anymore, because now there's new SUPER Colon Blow!"

ROFL :D :D :D

Bass-O-Matic

Laraine Newman: (*takes a sip from glass*) "Mmmmmm, that's terrific bass!"

SNL has not been funny for a very long time. Longer than I have been able to watch the new episodes.

I find 30 Rock genuinely hilarious though.
