Cossacks II: The Napoleonic Wars.
Nuke Snake, by David Riggle. Pure-two-player-blow-'em-up-blast-the-forest-incinerate-the-ammo-rocket-your-opponent-and-trap-him-in-his-tail-fun!
Master of Orion II.
Shogun: Total War.
Armada II ( that is, with the Fleet Operations mod.)
Hellsoft

IF we consider all gaming venues, here is my list (in order of favorite):
1) Diablo II: LoD (PC)
2) Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
3) ES IV:Oblivion (PC)
4) Uncharted Waters 2:New Horizons (SNES)
5) 1942 (NES)
The Secular Resistance

GTA2.
No more, no less (I'm getting sick of games turning from 2D to 3D).
Oh, and Half Life 2 (and its sequels), but that's it!
WTF?
You expect us to be able to label the awesomest games ever? There's too many.
Any Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross and Trigger, Valkyrie Profile, Legend of Zelda (most of them), Rise of Nations, Civilization (whole series), Total War (At least from Rome to Medieval 2), and a whole bunch more that I can't think of right now.

- Sonic and its Sega sequels
- Alex the Kidd in Miracle World
- CS:Source
- GTA series

4.Worms:Mayhem:mp5:
You lucky bastard. :p They still haven't got that damn thing over here in the states. I'm stuck playing friggin' Worms: 3D.
1) Secret of Mana
2) Diablo
3) Warcraft II
4) Starcraft
5) Chrono Trigger
Intangelon
02-11-2007, 16:55
Computer (Mac, in my case):
1. The Civilization series (in order, II, I, III, IV...damned "3-D" foolishness)
2. The Marathon series
3. The Diablo series
4. Unreal Tournament series, especially sniper/camping servers (I want the pink cloud!)
5. Carmageddon and Carmgeddon II: Carpocalypse Now -- nothing like running down an entire town to bleed off commute stress.
Console (Intellivision, NES, PS1, PS2 is my personal history):
PS1
1. Worms: Armageddon
2. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
3. Skullmonkeys
4. Final Fantasy Tactics
5. Final Fantasy VII
PS2
6. Jak X Racing
7. Ace Combat 04: The Unsung War
8. Culdcept
9. Beyond Good & Evil
10. God of War
INTELLIVISION
11. Sub Hunt -- no newer console has ever come close to this game in terms of intense naval combat, and that's a shame.
12. Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin -- perhaps the progenitor of all the early 2D-as-3D FPS games. Addictive in its day.
13. Discs of Tron -- simplicity itself, yet very addictive.
14. Utopia -- another progenitor, this time for RTS.
15. Super Pro Basketball -- ah, yes...remember the days when sports games didn't require you have the dexterity of a trained monkey and a hard drive for short-term memory? Yes, I'm old. Sorry.

5) Zone of the Enders (PS2) - One of the greatest games no one has heard of.
4) Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Best. FPS. EVER. No discussion needed. Master Chief barely deserves to shine Bond's shoes.
3) Metal Gear Solid (PSX, GCN remake) - Broke open the stealth genre as the greatest game of its generation.
2) Burnout 3: Takedown (PS2/XBOX) - The most fun I've ever had with a game (not that way...)
1) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - Engrossing storyline, compelling characters, a film-scale score, graphic prowess...and it was just really damn fun.

in no particular order:

Wouldn't say I have a specific order, but (all PC): Halflife series and spinoffs (CS, DoD), Unreal Tournament series, GTA series, and there's many others that I enjoyed playing a lot but wouldn't say there were masterpieces.
Levee en masse
02-11-2007, 17:13
Deus Ex
System Shock II
Civilization II (largly by dint of the fact that that was the first one I played)
Monkey Island II: LeChucks Revenge
Beneath A Steel Sky
IMO anyway
I'll name 2:
Star Control 2 (PC version)
Betrayal at Krondor
Naming 5 would lead to naming dozens of possible candidates ranging from Master of Orion (I&II) and Civilzation I (very much superior to II) to Railroad Tycoon and Baldur's Gate II + ToB
The only new-ish game worth mentioning is Dominions III and it's not even that great a game compared to golden oldies.

The remake is good, however it's just an improved original. :D
I'm talking about the 4 HD disk original version.
Call of Duty. And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRf8ro1q6kI), ladies and gentlemen, is why.

Since there is no such thing as "best game ever", I'll do what everyone else is doing and instead list some of my personal favorites.
In no particular order (and I'm probably forgetting a few):
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
Flashback: The Quest for Identity
Baldur's Gate
Knights of the Old Republic
Quake
Star Trek: Voyager: Elite Force
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Longhaul
02-11-2007, 18:28
Impossible to narrow it down to a top 5. Ther've been so many, and I'd probably change my mind if I was asked again tomorrow. That said...
Elite on my old BBC B... awesome.
Silent Hunter 2 and Destroyer Command - both buggy as hell, I know, but the whole idea of online gaming with the players of 2 different games competing against each other (with league style scoring, no less) was fabulous, and is yet to be equalled, imo.
EVE Online, about 2-3 years ago, before CCP broke it ('though I still pay my sub... go figure)
Civ (2,3,4)
The Cossacks series... I recall one particular LAN game where we'd gone with 4 hours of peacetime to ensure that we would have a weekend's worth of campaigning. At the end of peacetime, our token AI opponent, who - unseen by us - had been building up obscene numbers of cheap troops, attempted to attack, and crashed the game for us all. Bastard.
Zork, for adding grues to my world.
Etc.
Aegis Firestorm
02-11-2007, 18:32
Conflict (Amiga)
Red Storm Rising (C-64)
Wing Commander (PC)
Twisted Metal Series (PS/PS2)
Missle Command (arcade AND Atari 2600, I was a junkie)
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
Nothing else really compares.

What, ever?
Erm... bit hard to say. I'll narrow it down to my 3 favourites, that might help.
UFO : Enemy Unknown (because it's ace)
Rainbow Six : Raven Shield (superb action, shame about the expansion packs)
Rome Total War : Total Realism (because it gets everything oh so right)
1. Chrono Trigger (snes)
2. Master Of Orion 2 :)... ... I lost the game disk to an overzealous parent:headbang:... anyone know where I can get another?
3. Final Fantasy (4, 6, 7)
4. Half-life (all)
5. Worms Armageddon
Too many but that would have to be top 5.

1)GOTHIC(1>=Night of the Raven>2)
2)Diablo 2 LOD
3)Medieval Total War(nice to see so many Total War fans)
4)Secret of Monkey Island 1,2
5)Fable?!
6?)Played Planescape Torment one day only,it might grow significantly, great potential.
Valkyrie Profile. Hands Fucking Down.
The Runner Ups:
Final Fantasy Seven.
Elder Scrolls Oblivion.
Elder Scrolls Morrowind.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Half Life: I like the game, I really do, but I really can't see where it deserves this massive following of rabid howler monkeys. The dialogue is clever and original, the characters have their own unique personalities, and the physics engine is excellent.
The action feels so god damn repetitive, the main character is a unlovable mute, and if I have to do one more see-saw puzzle I'm going to eat the disk.
Halo: I like the game, I really do, but I really can't see where it deserves this massive following of twitching Ritalin popping twelve year olds. The action is intense, the game flows perfectly, and it's great fun.
It's doing the same thing everything has done before. For some reason Bungie saw storyline as a bit of an option, because if you've read the books, the game leaves so much out you're left with finger in your nose trying to remove part of your brain.

In no particular order: Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda (the original one), and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Honorable mentions: Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Jackal, Kickle Cubicle (the first video game I ever owned!), and maybe Altered Beast or Golden Axe II.

Tetris, whoo! Also for most awesome theme song. *nod*
Morrowind and System Shock 2. They have flaws of course (offscreen dice rolls are wack, and what was with the last 3 levels of SS2?), but I can't find a single game I enjoy more than those two.
Oh, and Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter was a damn good game, I don't care if I was 12 when I last played it or if it was a complete rip off of Halo.
