A big snap type. Tossed my Murano glass right off the shelf :(

My kid is freaked. Dog keeps patrolling.

Life in the shaker zone!

Oh that is in Alum Rock in San Jose California.

Do you know which fault? Calaveras or Hayward?

EDIT: Calaveras, apparently.

It was kinda liquidy and funky. Out here on Treasure Island it was kinda nothing.

And...so...why haven't you been to the SF NSG meets....hmmm?

First of all-a lot of real estate separates both events. The fires are a six hour drive south of here.

And second, that earthquake was really kind of nothing. Like if I shook your bed for a few seconds.

Quakes happen all the time. Now big ones that make people go "Son of a " is hard to say. Last major one was Loma Preta back in 89.

Now the person who is able to predict them will be a billionaire....

Yup. Been building for awhile I heard. Better small ones then a big one!

Well we live on the coast line and fault lines! :)

However, the fires are far away.

Too right. Like the big one that's brewing down this way...

If you were having sex at the time it would have been the perfect moment to ask: did the earth move for you darling?

How often is that line given in California, does it get tiring?

And her reply for you would be:

"I'm sorry I fell asleep"

That's how you can tell a screenwriter is a LA implant and not born here, they still think that one will be funny. (I saw it in a re-run of Two and a Half Men the other day, marking the Nth time I've run across that joke...

I've been through a couple of earthquakes. a 5.6 earthquake is actually pretty big.

To which my reply would be: You're sorry? I'm sorry the quake woke you, and by the way, you shouldn't leave your front door open when napping.

Thanks - I can preface this nugget of knowledge with an 'actually...' when I ever hear that line in conversation as in: 'actually, did you know that in California...'

The great quake of California is one of those disasters that's always been spoken of a 'just around the corner' throughout my life but not yet happened; similar to Venice sinking or asteroid hitting earth or a Supertramp comeback.

Yeah, all my friends felt it and asked me, "whoa did you feel that?" but alas, I had not because I had been out walking. Oh shucks.

That must suck...

Around here (suburban NY), any "earthquakes" are downright pathetic. I think the strongest we had in my lifetime was a measly 4.2 -- and I slept right through it.

It's at times like this I appreciate living in a country lying in the middle of the European plate. No earthquakes. Hope everything is ok!

Well there was that big one when the roof of St. Catherine's church in Krakow collapsed. I'm afraid that it's hight time for another... Since it was in 1530... :D

My mom used to live near there. Hell...I used to live up in Elkgrove. This is unusual for San Jose.

Minimal damage. Thank God for that since this was the strongest earthquake to hit the region since Loma Prieta back in 1989!

Ooooh. The most recent earthquake I experienced was 4+. The before that, another 4+, and it was rainin', the soils are soft, the building I was in was really ancient, it was on the verge of collapse... so I moved out.

Strongest we had was a 7.8, back in 1990... but I was one year old then. The next year, we had a really big dormant volcano erupt... and of course, not to mention the yearly typhoons/cyclone/hurricanes... we live on the edge. :D

We have weak quakes here every so often. Just waiting for the next big one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Fault_Zone#1811.2F1812_earthquake_series).
