The vote passed 261 to 153!

This vote allows the Native Hawaiians to form an interim governing council to negotiate with the Federal Government.

I actually applaud this move. What do you people think?

Applause seconded.
Cannot think of a name

I used to know how to say "Keep Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands..." in Polynesian or whatever language it's actually called.

That'd be more impressive if I still knew it.

Or even what the language is called.

Anyway, knew a few people who were really into Hawaiian nationalism.

Honestly, the way Hawaii became a state is about as dick as it comes, so yeah, from the very very little I know about what just happened that's good.

I reserve the right to change that opinion after finding out about it should it not be what I think it is.

Does this mean they are leaving?

I dunno...

What more is this than the government looking down on them, saying "ok..have your little club. Nothing will change, and your still beholden to us."

Actually, I find that the Constitution would probably applaud the Hawai'ian actions-the Federal Government was never intended to have the powers it has assumed, as the Tenth Amendment shows. Considering that they were a conquest as opposed to joining willingly, I'm glad the camel's nose is in the tent-let's try and pull in the whole camel.

You can find information here (http://www.hawaiireporter.com/story.aspx?8e829957-c928-4eaa-849a-e7659cc03bd4), here (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2005/Apr/10/op/op05p.html) & here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akaka_Bill).

Obviously this doesn't undo the fact that the sovereign Kingdom of Hawai'i was brutally annexed by the United States, but it's better than nothing.

Ah, I see. That clears up everything.

And no it doesn't, but really, if we hadn't, someone else would have. Hawai'i was doomed. Personally, I happen to prefer it being in our hands than in, say, the hands of the British who'd probably call it the Sandwich Islands or something rather than preserve the actual name.

The most likely occupier would have actually been Germans, from what I've heard. A large portion of the population was, indeed, Germans, in the form of the tens of thousands "Lunas" who had been employed to serve as foremen and overseers on plantations.

But, amusingly enough, because of breeding and inbreeding, when the US annexed Hawai'i, the "Missionary families", or more appropriately, sugar barons, were all partially native Hawai'ian. And because of that, those same families are amongst those who will be the direct beneficiaries of this bill.

The irony of it all. I didn't read through the bill but is it a bill granting them native status?

British did hold them for a while, but left. I know a few Hawai'ian nationalists who have stated "The British took the hint, now why can't you?"

You can find plenty of people like that in every state. Except they are called bigoted racial separatists.

This is nothing more than ethnic nationalism and it's hilarious to watch all the politically correct applaud the marginalization of more people.

People need to look more into this than just sticking it to the man. Even the leftist civil rights groups are condemning it.
