The World Series is in the books with the Red Sox sweeping the Colorado Rockies and completing the season with a 7 game winning streak.

Congratulations to Francona and the Red Sox and a well done to Colorado for making it this far!

I will be attending the parade yet again. I intend on going to every victory parade until and after death.

You know what that means...

Damn, this JUST happened! We're you waiting with your finger on the "Post" button or something?

Any way... congrats to the Sox. I'm glad they took it cause I really couldn't care any less about the Rockies. I don't have much love for anything that represents Denver. It would have been nice for them to take it in Boston, though.

One of the great things about being a Detroit fan (in any sport but hockey) is that people from outside of Michigan rarely like your team, even if they're winning.

Fuck yes. No... what term would you use to describe "fans" that all of a sudden cheer for a team when they start winning?

Anyway, we have none of those.

Fairweather fans is the term, I believe. A related term is bandwagon jumpers.

Why, yes. Using logical deduction, my dislike for "all things denver" stems from pure detestation of the broncos.

Bandwagon jumpers is the proper term, I remember now. Fairweather fans are the ones that only are fans when said team is winning.

Oakland.

Before you say anything... I'm forced to conclude that all that glory from the 70's and 80's is now heaping buckets of steaming karma dung on or heads. We couldn't win if refs had on money us.

For now....

The Rockies probably have one of the lowest budgets in either league - the highest paid player makes less than average for an MLB starting player. The BoSox has one of the highest budgets in either league, making it possible for them to purchase any talent they need. So the Rockies recruit solid but not spectacular players and bring them along in their farm team(s). Or they recruit people like Kazuo Matsui - who was recruited from Japan by the Mets and didn't adapt well to the Mets, but has done extraordinarily well with the Rockies. They develop team players, but not necessarily stars. The Sox, in the meantime, have people like Manny Ramirez, a star but not necessarily a team player.

Just to give a perspective on the BoSox win - a well-financed team that can afford whatever it needs to win, plays, and defeats, what is essentially a team on a shoestring budget that still made it to the World Series.

Your point is? It's not like Major League Baseball has a salary cap. The Rockies could have spent every penny on whoever they wanted or gone after whoever they wanted to. However, they didn't because their GM and owner just didn't go that way. It's that simple. There's no preset spending limits for teams - hell, the Rockies could've gone after Mark Teixera this year or Alfonso Soriano last year. But they decided not to.

Speaking of the BoSox... the agent for A-Rod announced today that he's turned down the 3-year option clause on his contract. Meaning he'll be a free agent. I'm guessing the Angels with play hard for him, but Boston will definitely be in contention. Plus, the Yankees are now minus Torre and A-Rod. Huzzah!

I'll root for every one of their losses.

It's definately not that simple. Small market teams like the Rockies simply can't afford to go after big name players. They can't pay a superstar a multibajillion dollar contract, and still build a team around him. Smaller market teams have to be more creative then the big ones in getting talent and doing well. Hell, the Oakland A's created a whole new branch of statistics to grade players past ERA, BA, and RBI.

Really, the BoSox arn't any different then the Yankees. They buy a good chunk of their talent, and are always in a position to get better players via free agency.

MEH....baseball.

I remember as a kid watching games.
Its just lame these days.

Steroids, illegal betting, multi million dollar contracts.
Importing illegal aliens to fatten rosters...
Corporate owned stadiums that charge outrageous prices for cheap beer and cold hotdogs....

Like most professional sports these days, its shame to see what has becom e of them.

The Rockies have one of the biggest ballparks in the Majors at more than 50,000 seats. Their average attendance for the past couple of years hasn't been too shabby, either. I'm sure the ownership can afford to put itself in at least a slight hole for a bigger name player.

It's beyond simple attendance. Much of it is licensing and apparel. Not to mention the TV contracts. Boston, New York, and a few others are just in a whole other league compared to the majority of franchises, never mind the small market ones.

Roids don't have as big an impact on the sport as you think, Pete Rose is so 90s bulletin board material, Yankees and BoSox spend the most...

What the fuck are you talking about?...

Baseball tickets are fairly cheap, compared to every other sporting event imaginable, bring your own peanuts and beer...

Give me a break. That's why MLB set a record attendance this year and things keep looking up.

I understand that. But the Rockies have a solid foundation - a new stadium and a good average attendance to bolster their finances. They also have a deal with FSN to broadcast their games. It's not much, granted, but if they signed a better player, they would have the basic foundation to fund it and would hope to see more revenue from more fans and more media attention.

Really?

Thats why whats-his-name confessed to his usage and admitted that it was widespread and has since become ostracized for it?

I think you underestimate the prevailance.

Buying talent my butt. You get the best players you can. Just because the Rockies don't have the money to "buy" big named players doesn't make the season any different. Here's what I know, that a team of rookies and kids beat out their entire division to get to the World Series. Number 2, without all the big named players that the yankees have for instance. Experience helps. But in the end all that matters is gameplay. We have players that are older and we have the kids. And newsflash, some of the best players are the newbies. Talent is talent.

And you are comparing a team that's been around for how long vs. teams that have been around forever. Boston has the fan base because people are passing on their legacy of fandom to their child and grandchildren. The Rockies don't have that. The Los Angeles Angels of freaking Anahiem don't have that. In 100 years they'll have it. Then they can charge crazy prices for tickets and buy themselves Blow Joe superbaseballman of the future. But for right now they are a young team that will have young players. But don't short change them. They are number 2 in the country for a reason. They rocked, even for team filled with kids.
