Seriously, who shot the sheriff?

Also, why aren't people complaining about this song advocating killing our noble policemen like they go after rap artists?

The proximate cause of shooting the sheriff was seeing "sheriff John Brown aiming to shoot me down." The performer goes on to claim that he acted in self-defense. This is justifiable homicide. On the other hand, many rap songs engender the notion that killing is "cool" and contribute to a sub-culture that fosters horrendous gang warfare. And, sadly, these gangs are primarily composed of blacks and Latinos who subscribe to this unfortunate sub-culture.

so why'd they go after Ice T's "Cop Killer"
which says essentially the same thing as "I shot the sheriff".

Oh, because of politicians who have nothing to offer
and use the always cheap "get constipated on crime" empty issue.
And think parents are too ignorant to go and read the lyrics for themselves.

Because songs such as "I Shot the Sheriff" did not inspire a generation of morally depraved killers and gang members. However, the current "hip-hop" culture has led to this sad eventuality.

Ice T's "Body Count" which made "Cop Killer", was a metal band, not a rap or hip-hop group.

Do we know the difference between rap and hip-hop?
I don't, but from what I understand there is a difference.

Because the guy in that song could sing? Also, he didn't litter every other sentence with "nigga".

I can't beleive I'm posting to suport an argument made by the prince of purple prose but I looked up the lyrics for Cop Killer and "that cop stopped me for nothing" is a far cry from "Sherrif John Brown aiming to shoot me down" as a supporting argument for self defense.

Rap is more lyrics than music. Hip-hop is lighter and more musicy.

What Sel Appa said, but here are a couple of examples.

Hip hop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaz2qkDZII4)
