It's Sunday, it's cold, we're bored, and either of us can think of a good movie we haven't already seen. It struck me that a bunch of you are probably in a similar situation (fucking Sundays, eh?) so I thought I'd ask you guys for some suggestions.
Soo... Come on, it's your chance to pawn off tired old propaganda! Or if you want to be really helpful, the preferred genres are sci-fi & horror and fantasy & drama. But please don't recommend any dramas.. Still have nightmares about Titanic.. Damn girly girls :p
If you're in a similar situation, we recommend Alien (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/) and True Romance. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108399/)

Nooooo! Don't see Dune! It's a horrendous pile of steaming, unmentionable bodily wastes! By all means read the books - they're fantastic - but the film should not be touched by anyone with any trace of decency in their soul. It's an offense to all upright and morally upstanding human beings.
I mean honestly - who the hell casts Sting as a lead character? Or, you know, makes that film anyway?
As for suggestions, Predator is always good for a laugh - some good old Arnie action with hints of sci fi and horror (kinda). Maybe Blade Runner? Another good sci fi. Can't go wrong with Star Wars (the originals at least - the prequels you can go very, very wrong with).
For fantasy there's always the Lord of the Rings, although I'm guessing that counts as one you've seen too many times before.
Can't think of any more right now - will keep trying :)

I'd go for the double feature. We already did. There's this little cult theater right next to us. Saw the Grindhouse double too, though those were a bit of a disappointment. It's almost painful to watch a movie made to be unintentionally funny and failing.Yeah, it's my favorite movie and quite an epic if your not scared of some nasty suicide scenes. We're just about ready to watch it now. Just need to save work and make some snacks. Thanks for the suggestion :)Nooooo! Don't see Dune!Don't worry, we won't. Not if I can help it anyway. As for Sting, well I hate to say this, but he's probably the best thing in that movie. If you can't make a movie without running a virtually continuous dialogue of what the characters are thinking, you're in the wrong fucking media, Mr. David OutToLunch. As for suggestions, Predator is always good for a laugh - some good old Arnie action with hints of sci fi and horror (kinda). Maybe Blade Runner? Another good sci fi. Can't go wrong with Star Wars (the originals at least - the prequels you can go very, very wrong with).
For fantasy there's always the Lord of the Rings, although I'm guessing that counts as one you've seen too many times before.Great! Turns out the wife's never seen Blade Runner. Thanks a lot mate.Aliens.:pI have an intense love-hate relationship with that film. It's cool, but it destroyed my favourite rubber monster. The Alien is supposed to turn its victims into facehugger eggs. Besides, the Queen that shouldn't have been lacks all the sex-predator grace and horror of the alien. Sort of like Alien 4, without the shitty commedy.Twelve Monkeys.:eek:Great film too. Alas, my wife always gets uncomfortable when I start drooling over Bruce Willis.

Why not be creative and make your own movie - there's plenty of reasonable free editing software and advice out there on the interwebs.
Think of a simple idea
Draw out the scenes
Film the different sections
Edit together with music
You can spend an entire day doing it as well as post the results on youtube for us all to enjoy next Sunday.
anything by Alejandro González Iñárritu (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0327944/) or Pedro Almodóvar (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000264/) (I think, haven't seen them all.) they're mostly not-girly girl drama's.

i think its pretty good, where it sags is the dialogue is incredibly heavy-handed and stilted but it think it comes from being a translation from teenager > japanese > english. imo the premise keeps it afloat.

The movie was somewhat okay before the bad dramatic speeding up of misunderstood science, at which point it was simply tolerable right up until the wolves showed up in New York just to chase the kids off the Russian ship. That was so ridiculous I simply could not take the rest of the movie seriously.

DAMN YOU! I was seriously about to post that but thought I'd read through the thread first!
Yea, I second City of God...it's probably one of my favorite films. Seu Jorge is even in it! =p
Pan's Labrynth is good, too, but don't expect a normal fantasy movie...oh...and it's fucking depressing. Seriously, after you've seen it you'll feel sad as hell for the rest of the day.
And I second Rushmore, as well. Actually, just go rent all of Wes Anderson's films, they're all wonderful. Rushmore is actually my least favorite of them. I recommend, in this order: The Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket. I've not yet seen the Darjeeling Express (it just hit theaters) but it looks like it's more in the style of Royal Tenenbaums than Rushmore or Bottle Rocket.
Best quote from Rushmore, though (ripped from imdb):
Max Fischer: I like your nurse's uniform, guy.
Dr. Peter Flynn: These are O.R. scrubs.
Max Fischer: O, R they?
...fucking classic. =p

The Duellists. It's the most realistic fencing movie ever made. It is based-off Joseph Conrad's story The Duel, which was inspired by a true story.
It is about two officers in Napoleon's army. One keeps stalking the other and forcing him to fight duels, which keep turning-out inconclusive. From before Napoleon is Emperor, to after his exile to St. Helena, they fight.
Weapons: small swords, sabres, sabres on horseback, and...pistols.
Anyway, that is sorta dramatic. The Three Musketeers, and it's sequel The Four Musketeers have quite realistic rapier play, and are certainly comic.
Other movies: Yojimbo and it's sequel Sanjuro are both funny, and display masterful Japanese sword fighting, based-off of Musashi's style.

I've seen a poster for this, somewhere. It looks good; at the worst, great eye candy, and at the best, a great epic.
I would like to recommend 2001: A Space Odyssey for anyone who has a day to kill. If you're confused, you can cheat and read the book, too.
One of the best movies I've seen recently is Pan's Labyrinth. In reviews people criticized it for being overly violent, but I am someone who almost never watches violent films and I was not too shocked. Maybe it's different on the small screen.

It's a character study. There are no "action scenes". There are several realistic sword fighting pieces, which actually properly depict how people act when they might get the innards impaled. All battle-scenes are skipped (they'd take-way from the story). There is a depressing retreat from Russia scene where they shoot a Cossack and fire at a bunch more who run-away. At the end there is a stalking duel, where both opponents have two pistols, and must stalk one-another from the woods.
Once again it's based of A Joseph Conrad story, which it follows decently well compared to most book-adaptions.
