What do you listen to when down?

The Mindset

Do you listen to music designed to cheer you up or do you listen to music that suits your mood?

I'm curious because I'm currently a bit down, and can't decide what to listen to. The former is probably healthier, but I'll leave my playlist in the able hands of NSG.

Music tends to alter my mood whenever I listen to it. Like listening to a depressing song tends to make me feel even worse, for instance.

I'd just advise playing what you wanna hear, and to hell with the mood of the song.

I listen to the exact same music when I'm down as usual. It might be because I'm always down but anyway. Currently I'm listening to Beethoven. Classical music is always good for your mood.

I listen to your mom scream my name. It usually gets me "up" again.

Sorry, I have been wanting to tell a "your mom" joke for a while :D

Traditionally, I listened to stuff like Radiohead when I felt like that. For some reason, that made me feel even more grim. God knows why, its not like their songs are downbeat or anything:p. So instead now I listen to crazy metal bands such as Sigh or Unexpect, as I find that its hard to stay miserable when listening to music THAT ridiculous.

I can never be in a sour mood while listening to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Just a few bars in and I'm groovin'.

Something like Stabbing Westward or Local H works. There's good metal out there, but since you don't like that...

Stabbing Westward "Violent Mood Swings" and Clawinger "Biggest and The Best" always worked for me.

Depends;

Existentialist crisis depression warrants the Smiths.

Romantic crisis depression, which, incidentally, I'm currently in, warrants either Brand New or Motion City Soundtrack

Anything else I listen to Thrice or Thursday.

Depends on what kind of 'down'.

Extremely pissed off calls for Norther.
Grumbling and annoyed is generally Linkin Park.
Generally depressed either the streets or something classical.

For an instant energy pick-me-up, I've been listening to 'Brown Eyed Girl' ^_^

Cheerful music just pisses me off when I'm down. I need music that I can identify with to cheer me up.

My Dying Bride
Anaal Nathrakh
Type O Negative
Mayhem

These usually find their way to my ears when I'm feeling bad.

Edit: And Battlefield Band. Somehow celtic music also does the trick, don't know why.

When I'm down, there's one song that without fail makes me feel better. A Quick One While He's Away. I have no ide why, it just helps.

Oh holy shit, you just mentioned both Sigh and Unexpect. Both of those bands are amazing in a ridiculous sort of way. Well played, sir.

I usually can't listen to upbeat music when I'm upset, it just pisses me off.

If I'm angry, any metal will do.
If I'm down and I want to sulk, Radiohead.
If I want to cheer myself up, I listen to power ballads. Because by the time I'm done, I'm singing along so much that I've forgotten I'm supposed to be upset.

I always always listen to either uplifting/upbeat music (dance house rock whatever) or cheesey  .... but if truly down and depressed nothing beats watching 'FightClub' ..... it makes you realise your not at rock bottom yet and want to get there .. unfortunalty as soon as you start thinking yeah i need to get there it means your on your way back up as your not being down but have an aim now .... even though i know this it works every time ... go so low there is no lower ... but to go there you have to get up .... and the first rule of .....

FightClub is one of the best modern films ever imo so forget music!!! .. if you want to go futher down watch it and if you want to get out of it watch it!

Thanks for some of your suggestions. It's been a tough couple of days for me: a really good friend of mine was killed in a plane crash while on a training flight (the first training fatality my college has had in 20+ years). I'll try to listen to some of your stuff before I go to the memorial tomorrow.
Now that I'm done hijacking the thread (sorry!), I usually listen to the soundtrack from Phantom of the Opera. It is kind of a carthatic experience.

Happy music. I tend to channel the moods and the evocation of whatever is around me, including that of pets, music, food, other people, and so on and so forth.

In other words, I don't listen to depressing music because I'll just become depressed even more. Happy music it is.

actually audio deprivation tends to cheer me up quite a bit. otherwise what i listen to any other time, interestingly odd but melodic glacial ambience.

the abscence of any sound that resembles that of the human voice is truely a great and wonderful relief.

The Downward Spiral is quite therapeutic.

Oh yes, cathartic as well. *nods emphatically*

Of course, i suspect you're implying the album experience ... for which i've been known to walk down the highway yelling Eraser at the top of my lungs.
Also, the version of Eraser from Further Down The Spiral is fun to play at gigs, when possible.
