Mother wants a new car and has decided it's between these two. She wants to know what's the better deal. If you hate both cars, suggest an AWD car that costs under $35,000USD.

Also, what kind of car do you have, if you have one? Do you like it?

I suggest a Hyundai. I have an Elantra and it's doing well by me.

Now normally I would say fuck the Chrysler (I just don't like American cars for some reason), but under this circumstance I would go for the Chrysler, simply because saying you drive a Chrysler is much more cooler then saying you drive a Volvo, and that is pretty much all it comes down to since performance wise they are pretty much equally mediocre.

my dad has a volvo V70 D5... i don't know what the S40 is like, but generally Volvo are quality built, safe, reliable, and the new models come with all the nifty mod cons you'd expect on a Mercedes or something (i was watching reviews of the new 2007 S80 the other day)

the D5 engine is also good. efficient but powerful and reliable.
that's what i know about volvos. don't know squat about Chryslers.

i have a Peugeot 307cc, and the cc bit is great in the summer, having the roof down tearing through the countryside, wind in hair, sun on face, etc.... but now in winter i kinda wish i'd got a volvo s60 or something instead (about the same price) :( but then, summer's not that far off and i'll change my tune again then :D
edit: oh and i say that because the Peugeot build is kinda poor, the engine unreliable, the service from the Peugeot people is terrible, and it gets cold in winter even with the heating on...
edit: and btw, the chrysler looks kinda oogly

Can you even get a Peugeot in the US?

I'd suggest finding an appropriate Subaru. If you want a well made AWD car, that's probably your best bet.

Definitely.

Get an '06 or '05 Impreza WRX. Just don't get the new one, I think everyone should boycott them until they hang the person who designed it.

And if you're not after a real car, I would suggest looking at the Liberty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Liberty).

Get the Volvo. The Chrysler isn't reliable.

Volvo is more luxurious and has a better status to the average person, too!

If you really want to be cool, say you drive a Daimler-Chrysler, since that's what the company is. I'm not sure it's technically correct, but it sounds good.

That's right! Now it's owned by Dark Cerberus, or something. A private equity firm.

EDIT: Cerberus Capital Management, actually. I was close.

I would be afraid of making some sort of Freudian slip if I drove a Volvo.

A_Generic_Woman: What kind of car do you drive?
Player_1: I drive a Vulva...volva..Vulvo! Gah! Volvo!

Wow. If you die from a 300 damage roll, you seriously need to level up, and possibly consider some innate HP buffs as you go along.

I have driven an S40 and it's a nice car, it's slightly on the tight side if you're a large/tall person though. I have never driven any Chrysler, though they have a reputation for building crappy cars, or so I've heard.

i would go for the Liberty (Legacy outside of Australia) also. but of the two it'd have to be the volvo.

Sweet, it's finally here. It's a revival of the Japanese brands, has anyone noticed? Now all we need is Toyota making a cheap alternative to the new Lexus supercar and call it "MR2".

Well the debate here is about which car is the sweeter ride and, between the two, I suppose they're about the same - but if you want a really sweet ride, you need to throw in the third option.

Your mother.

Get the Volvo. Whether things have changed these days or not I don't know, but the last Volvo my family had was indestructible. It lasted over 250,000 miles, and after that we gave it to a family friend - who had a head-on collision with a BMW a few months later. The BMW was a write-off, but the Volvo just needed a new radiator and a new bumper. It's still chugging along six or seven years later, in fact.

Indestructible!

Edit: In fact, if memory serves, the last time I read a Guinness Book of Records, the highest mileage car in the world was... a Volvo!

I'd certainly choose a car that is named "04s" when spelled backwards, over one that is backwardcalled "gnirbes"... :p

I personally like the Hyundai Sonata.

That said, have her go to http://www.myproductadvisor.com/mpa/auto/inputSummary.do and fill out the questionaire -- it helped me really find the perfect car for me (and boy am I happy!)

I suggest a Hyundai. I have an Elantra and it's doing well by me.

*hugs* Which color? I have the aquamarine Sonata.

Of the two, I'd pick the Volvo. I don't really know what's available in the US and how much, but if she's looking for a decent AWD saloon she could look at the Audi A4. Probably a bit too pricey, though.

Well if you want a well-designed, well-made car that can go round corners, you can rule out the Chrysler.
