It has only been a year since the current Hungarian prime minister, Ferenc Gyurcsány, was exposed via audiotape as being both corrupt and a liar, two things he himself spoke of in the recordings. Ferenc Gyurcsány had made several claims of the state of the Hungarian economy and it's failed transition to the 'free' market economy, all of which were untrue, to win the elections for his Hungarian Socialist Party. The result, along with long standing anger at his policies of increased taxation on working people, increases in utility bills, inflation, corruption (Ferenc Gyurcsány himself made millions from the theft of national assets in the 'shock therapy' era of rampant capitalism in the 1990s) and other things which anger the Hungarian people greatly, caused the biggest riots and demonstrations since the 1956 uprising.

Out of thise anger comes the Magyar Garda or Hungarian Guard in English. Allied to the nationalist Movement for a Better Hungary party, it poses a force in Hungary, with 600 joining it's ranks within the first three months and over 5000 people making a pledge to join after. The Magyar Guard are backed by known veterens of the 1956 unprising, clegery from the Catholic Church and a former Minister of Defence, making this movement, unlike the more marginalised nationalist movements of other European nations, a force to be both acknowledged and a force that can and may alter the landscape of Hungarian politics.
