California Fires: SoCal NSers, check in

It's been gloriously smoky here at Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, CA for those who don't know), but we're not experiencing any really adverse effects other than the occasional ash dropping from the sky. However, I know there are a number of other Southern California NSers that might be a tad closer to the fire lines. This is a thread for discussion and checking in about the fires.

For reference, the LA Times website (http://www.latimes.com/) has pretty good coverage of the fires.

Last year at this time, I lived in Moreno Valley, CA. I am intimately aware of how bad fires can be in SoCal. I have friends and family still in the area. I can only hope that they're safe.

I live in Southern California. I've been watching the news during the afternoon after class. There aren't any fires that close to my home, since I live near the beach (Torrance). No one close to me is in harm's way, but I hope things get better soon.

In. I'm surrounded by fires... eh, sort of. There's one to the northeast, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest of me. But not one to the north of me, oddly enough... I thought this was a firestorm!! (I kid, I kid...)Actually, the fire to the east of me might have been put out already, so I dunno about that one.

In any case, even though this whole firestorm thing isn't as bad as it could be (or as anyone is making it out to be - see 2003/4 fire in San Bernadino County), what's going to make things more screwed up is rain - and, as all of the SoCal people know, winter is rainy season. Meaning mudslides. All over the place.

Anyone remember that sinkhole in the middle of the street that swallowed up all of those houses in SoCal? Think that, but with lots of mud...

*sigh* my friend outside LA was kind of freaking out earlier. she told me an hour ago that a fire that was 100 miles from her house this morning is now only 50 miles outside. she said the moon rose red...san diego is fairly well surrounded. =/

I like how city officials are starting to put heat (pun) on the SoCal fire department people when they're the ones not allocating enough resources for these people to fight these fires properly in the first place!

I'm really starting to think politics are being geared towards the ignorant now... :(

I do hope they are okay. I heard ~200 homes lost already :(, and this was yesterday *unconfirmed by me so far*

Too, the moon rise was rather nice when i saw it last. But it was truly freaky at about 1700, seeing this red disk of a sun; looked like the Japanese flag almost.

Freaky, Im across the street from you!

Apparently my cousins have been evacuated from their house. Stupid fires.

Couldn't Arnie just piss on the flames and roar in a Conan-esque fashion, instantly putting them all out?

I thought that was most of the reason that he was elected :(

Southwest Riverside County has been pretty safe so far, but I can see the smoke from Fallbrook and Rancho Bernardo to the south and Lake Arrowhead north. We're all hoping for a change in the weather. These Santa Ana winds are really bad.

I hope this is not as bad as the one that engulfed Oakland, CA! Ok Ok. I know it says SoCal NSers and I live in PA but still...

I pray that the fires will be put out as quickly as they can.

Mudslides annoy me because the name sounds like so much fun, but they rarely are. I can't believe I'm saying this, but sometimes there is too much mud. :(

Over 1000 homes destroyed and 1500 more at risk.

The BYU-SDSU game is postponed, the Lakers preseason basketball game cancelled. Chargers game possibly being moved...

Two dead according to the reports with 34 seriously injuried. :(

I just learned that two friends of mine from Renaissance Faire had to evacuate their home in the hills outside San Diego and take refuge in a high school gymnasium. They're used to roughing it since they camp at faire, but I wonder what's going to happen to their dogs, cats and other animals?

I lived in Riverside a couple of years ago when the fire started in back of Cal State San Bernardino - my daughter was a student there at the time and her boyfriend lived in the evacuation zone. It was very worrying.
