Authorites remove protesters from crane
October 23, 2007: 12:25 PM EST

Oct. 23, 2007 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) --

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say they have removed four protesters from a Charlotte construction crane where the activists unfurled a protest banner early Tuesday morning.

Activists with the Rainforest Action Network draped a 50-foot banner across from Bank of America's (NYSE:BAC) headquarters, criticizing the company for funding coal mining and coal-fired power plants.

A spokesman for the San Francisco-based environmental group says the protesters were never in danger.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spokeswoman Julie Hill says four protesters were removed from the crane. She says each will face trespass, breaking and entering and possibly other charges.

This was the biggest news today, apparently it caused a massive delay in traffic in uptown Charlotte as they had to block off the area until they were able to get the protesters down. You know what I find funny about all of this? That they are protesting against coal mining and coal-fired plants, but aren't they also protesting against Nuclear power? A highly reliable, cheap, and clean power source? Nuclear power is a lot more efficient and reliable than solar power and wind power right now.

Ahh those crazy kids.

How does coal power tie in to rainforest destruction?

If anything, it makes a lot more environmental sense to support clean coal as an abundant power source for electric vehicles, thereby helping to avert the massive environmental devastation caused by cutting down rainforest to grow biofuels like sugarcane-based ethanol and oilseed biodiesel. By conserving rainforest and reducing the energy-intensive systems needed to grow and process food crops in to fuel, we'd be able to offset a lot of the negative aspects of coal mining and coal power.

Ah. I was wondering what the Royal Australian Navy was doing in a landbound state...

Don't see why much would have to be cleared, most mining is sub-surface anyway. Shaft mining and such, strip mining is wasteful if you don't have to do it.

if by 'clean' you mean "produces waste products that will remain dangerous for longer than humans have existed thus far - hope we can figure out how to keep things contained for hundreds of thousands of years"

argue it's better than alternatives if you like, but don't pretend it's clean

except for that whole releasing fossil carbon thing. seems that has something to do with this global warming stuff i keep hearing about...

I should've said cleaner then. My bad.

You've seen a shaft mine on the surface before? Spoil heaps, processing sheds, stuff like that? And there's the transport to and from the site, accomodation for the workers....

ran does work besides just rainforest protection. this is appalachian mountain protection, for example.
