Ok this thread has two parts

1) What alcohol do you all enjoy drinking (specifics brand year and such)

2) Supposing you had a party coming up ... you just got a new job got the cash rolling in and promised to buy a few good bottles of SOMETHING for a big party.

What would you buy? (yes this is my situation) Specially what would you buy that was decent quality that ran for under $125 USD (that is the price range I am looking for so middle quality)

Okay, well first you have divide it up into hard liquor and beer.

For specific brands of beer, I'd suggest Guinness, Labat Blue, Boulevard, and if you need some cheap stuff Coors and Pabst.

For hard liquor I'd suggest some Jaigermeister, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels. Or you could go with some Scotch...

Cutty Sark whiskey
Plantation Rum
Plymouth Gin
Bombay Sapphire Gin
Chopin Vodka
Jager
lots and lots of beers.

That's what me and my roommates did for our last good alcohol night.

for good beers, it depends what style you want.

Chimay is one of the best. Sam makes some great ones, as does Magic Hat, Boulder, Stone, Harpoon...

let me know what kinda beer you would want and I can suggest some good ones

If you're looking for a compromise, Sam Adams and Jim Beam Bourbon.

If you're looking for good, most North-European Imports and American Microbrews, and Makers Mark.

I like to start the night with something sweet, so vodka coolers I always buy.

From there I move to the rum. Havana Club for something a little spicy, Captain Morgan for something a little sweet.

Then the harder stuff. My personal favorites are Chambord Liquer because it's very sweet and a nice addition to most fruity mixed drinks and Chartreuse for it's good taste (note, this is a matter of personal opinion) and it's ability to scar my digestive tract X3 Both, unfortunately are $40 a pop, though.

Usually I have amarula, sambuka, baja rosa, fireball whiskey, and sour puss on hand and for some reason someone ALWAYS brings a bottle of straight vodka which I will only touch when I officially have no live tastebuds left on my tongue which ends up being about an hour before I either pass out or am violently ill. X3

As for beer... I'll only touch the locally brewed stuff. Everything else tastes like vomit.

I'd probably get bottles or something larger of a light ale - probably an IPA as its easy to drink and most people like it. I'd also grab a bottle of decent scotch for random toasting.

1) What alcohol do you all enjoy drinking (specifics brand year and such)
Vodka - Żubrówka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BBubr%C3%B3wka)
Gin - Hendricks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hendrick%27s_Gin)
Sambuca (no specifics)
Rum - many dark rums are good
Bailey's
Whiskey - Crown Royal
Amaretto - I haven't encountered one I don't particularly like
Southern comfort is also rather good
Kahlua
Goldschlagger (though I can never afford it)
Wine - I don't have a specific favourite brand or year, I like reds and dessert wines though
Beer - Moosehead, Fruli, Wellington County, Heineken, Stella, there's some apricot beer I quite like but can never remember the name of... along with a pile of other beers...

2) Supposing you had a party coming up ... you just got a new job got the cash rolling in and promised to buy a few good bottles of SOMETHING for a big party.
I would probably buy all of the items there, along with a bunch of fruit (and other) flavoured liqueurs for mixing something fancy, I'd probably go heavy on the beer since it's hard to go wrong and as the night goes on it's also harder to spill a beer bottle than it is to spill a glass of mixed drink on my furniture. I would also probably buy this pomegranate liqueur that I've seen that looks promising, but is out of my price range.

edit: also, now why do I feel like an alcoholic?

Hmm, normally the alcohol threads only arrive on thursday to sunday :D

But anyway:

Beers: Hertog Jan, Kwak, Kilkenny, Leffe, La Trappe.

Strong stuff: Salmiakki, Minttu, Zubrowka (with applejuice), Schrobbelaer, Vana Tallinn, Limoncello, Raki or Ouzo, Sambuca.

I guess I could think of some more, but I'm lazy and sober :p

I'm currently loving the sake, although I couldn't help you with the actual brands since it's unlikely that they would be in the US (Not to mention the whole difficult kanji problem).

BUT, if you want some quality sake, a few rules:

Bigger ain't better. Any large bottles will be ok, but not as good. The same with small cup o' sake, that's the rough stuff. The size of a bottle of wine is about right.

Sake from Japan only. California just doesn't cut it (Tried to drink some when I was home and really couldn't take it).

Northern Japan sake is drier and slightly fruity in flavor. If you try for a nothern one, see if you can't get it from Nagano or Gifu Prefectures. Niigata sake is probably the king of the notherns.

Southern sake is much more complex in flavor, it tends to be much smoother and a bit woody. Osaka is a good bet, though I personally like Yamaguchi's seaside ones (But I'm slightly biased).

Good sake should run around $25 to $35 a bottle, maybe more for better stuff.

Finally, serve that sucker slightly chiled (Maybe a degree or two lower than room temp), NOT hot!

For wines... Hmmm, I recomend Ravenwood's merlot. It's a bit strong, but I like it.

The idea so far is to kind of bring something a little spendier then my friends normal fare but one which they would enjoy, I would like to bring something new to try

They are not Scotch drinkers (though I am)
So far I picked up 1 liter of Cpt Morgan private stock and one 750ml of Bush Mills 16 year special reserve

Was thinking maybe a good Vodka to round things out as well (but I have absolutely NO taste in vodka ... I enjoy the drinks but do not have the real pallet to distinguish good vodkas like I do with some of the other alcohols .

Thanks for the input as well guys and gals!

I definatly suggest Chopin or Imperial. Both are high quality, and not insanely expensive (I personally loved Chopin despite my hatred of vodka and shots in general. It is quite smooth and has a bit of that nice, greasy taste of a good potato vodka)

1) Beer (Tervetes; Uzavas), Wine (Semi-Sweet Georgian wine from around 2002), Vodka (Finlandia) and Absinthe (don't know actually brands here).

2) Depending what kind of party: if that would be kind of light party of good friends coming together for chat and drinks then Beer and Wine would in order (suits most people and both genders). If it would more active party with a bit heavier drinking expected then I would suggest vodka (for classical people) and Absinthe, because it has interesting and exciting drinking process. Appropriate for parties and fun.

1) Beers - Becks, Kronenbourg, Hoegaarden (any variety) or Chimay. Red wine - no particular allegiance to country of origin... there are good wines and bad wines from everywhere in my experience. Malt whisky - preferably Islay malts, Laphroaig or Bunnahabhain ideally.

2) Parties are a little different...

The last big party we hosted at my house was a 30th birthday bash for one of my wife's friends. A friend and I (between us we had about 30 years time served in hospitality and the licensed trade) decided to operate a sort of cocktail bar. We had a gigantic range of spirits and obscure liqueurs, and loads and loads of fruit juices and other potential mixers. We were ready. We needn't have bothered.

At 3pm on the day, just as the first guests were arriving, we made up a few 2 litre jugs of what we considered to be a sort of introductory 'welcome to the party' type drink. It was basically vodka and cranberry juice, with a splash of peach schnapps and the juice of 1 fresh lime added to each jug. By 6pm we had used all 12 litres of vodka that we'd had to start with and all of the cranberry, and had to send out for fresh supplies.

The lesson I learned from this experience (although with hindsight I should have seen it coming) is that in a party environment people will drink pretty much whatever there is available. Also, that if the guest list mainly consists of women from the SW of Scotland between the ages of 25 and 40, you can never have enough vodka.

I enjoy almost everything with alcohol in it as long as it isn't to sweet. My favorite must be duvel a very good Belgian beer. I generally like most heavier beers (orval, chimay, westmalle, augustijn etc), but also Jupiler or Stella for everyday drinking. Wine is also nice, as long is it isn't to sweet, I prefer red though. I'm no big fan of liquor or cocktails mostly because most of them taste to fruity and because they make you drunk to fast but when it's free I won't turn it down.

2) Of course I would buy champagne, I used to be neutral towards it but a few days ago we started a night with some champagne and it was pretty cool. Alternatively I would just buy a few crates of Duvel or other fine Belgian beers (or from other countries, good foreign beers are probably a lot more expensive than the locals). I don't know a lot of champagne brands so I can't really give a lot of advice there (I'm a student, if it looks like piss with bubbles in it I'll drink it ;))

YES! Here's someone with a firm grasp of the obvious. What else do you use for a celebration, but champagne? Everything about it says celebration, from the cork popping, to the fizzing, to the all little bubbles in the plastic champagne flutes that you've bought... And who doesn't like bubbly grape juice?

Just make sure you break it out BEFORE everyone is falling down drunk and won't remember what a great drink it was.

I suspect you will want something a little sweet and not brut. I'm sure there are a dozen different web sites with recommendations for all different price ranges. Holidays are coming up.

Agreed. Opening last year's New Year's Party with a bottle of champagne definitely made the night.

Of course, we then spent the next hour or so kicking around a little hamster ball filled with cream and ice we were using to make ice cream (it worked, and turned out fairly well for the effort).

On topic:
Favorite Beer? I'd have to say either Yuengling or Guiness, but I'm not much of a beer person either way.

I'll drink anything that calls itself vodka, including flavored vodkas like Green Apple Smirnoff (though that stuff can get REAL expensive).
