applying logic to the US Postal service

so, my mail service has sucked for about 3 years, recently I found out that most of my mail has been held at the post office down town because someone marked my house as vacant (which is understandable because until recently we were the only house without a broken down car in the yard....)
anyway, I finally got that taken care of, but was still missing mail, mostly packages. Today I got mail for my neighbor on the same side of the street two houses down.....so I am going to take it to her.
Assuming that the mail man just made a mistake.....where should I go look for my mail at? two houses to the east? (I have the mail from my neighbor 2 houses west of me)
Is there a logical starting point of where I should begin to look for my mail today?
If someone else is getting my mail and they are keeping it, who is in trouble? the post man or the person keeping my stuff?
also, have any of you ever had mail issues? anything funny?

Logical starting point? The Post Office! ;)

We get a letter or two for neighbors every so often. If it's close, I deliver it. If not, I put a note on it for the mailman to re-deliver.
I don't know what you can do about mail that ISN'T delivered to you. If you don't know about it, you can't do too much.
Maybe get a P.O. Box?

but I don't wanna talk to them anymore! I have been dealing with them.......it will be 4 years in November over the fact that they can't seem to deliver my mail.
I have never had this problem anywhere else.....just this house.
Also, the bank has charged me $30 for a returned mail fee 5 times this quarter (because it gets returned saying I don't live here) and the electric company attempted to cut me off twice this year because the mail got returned that this was a vacant house.
It's frustrating and I just want my mail.

Take the bastards to small claims court, or regular court. Emotional distress is pricey!

I think you can get P.O. Boxes at those pack and ship places. I know of a couple that existed prior to being turned into UPS stores...Don't know if they still provide that service, though.
One of the big advantages, I'm told, is that you don't have to worry about mail being stolen out of the box and having your credit identity stolen...

Ahh right...sorry I misinterpreted your post. I thought you'd stopped with talking to the Post Office once the front yard had been cleaned up...
in that you told them
look...the bloody car is not there anymore and there are people living here in fact I'll let the kids live in a tent in the front yard just so you can grasp the idea that my house is inhabited by not only myself but my husband as well as the kids who while sleeping in the tent in the front yard also use the house for non sleeping purposes. Now...give me that form (in triplicate) that lets you know all this in your own interminable bureaucratic language.
Thats a really crap situation...take them to court...(Post Office)

I don't even think you can sue the post office.
I've put "House is vacant" notes on mailboxes for empty rental property. The mail starts right back up again when the new tenant moves in and takes the sign down.
Maybe what you need is a "We live here" sign on the mailbox. Or a nice talk with the mailman when he's delivering part of your mail.
I don't even think you can sue the post office.
Sure you can, in some jurisdictions you can sue god himself. I don't think the trigger happy bastards are beyond reproach. Though you may want to invest in Kevlar.

oh, no the whole car thing.....it's apparently "the style" around here to have crap in your yard, broken cars, old couches, pitt bulls.....our yard is empty (except for grass) and we don't keep toys outside or any of that stuff, so we were told by the post office manager man (route manager?) that he had marked our house as vacant because we didn't have anything in our yard that signified people living here (and we park our cars in the garage)
right now my car is broke and in the driveway.....so I guess he thinks someone lives here, but apparently he thinks it's the people down the street :mad:

Am I wrong in finding this amusingly bizarre? I mean I have an image in my mind of a street of houses all prime 'redneck' real estate and in the midst is a pristine Casa el Smunkeeville...with you in the yard shouting MMMAAAAAAIIIIIIILLLLLLL!!!!!!

I should google earth my address and post my block, we are literally the only unlittered house on the block....no kegs, no beer cans, no cars on blocks, no bikes, no dogs chained to the porch, no broken mowers, and no swingsets.

And yet...no post...bizarre...well I hope it gets sorted...someone above mentioned talking to your postie....not a bad idea that...?
Reglardless of whether or not you actually -can- sue the post office, if you go down there with your angry face on and start shouting words like 'lawsuit' and 'PMS' people will take notice. :p

I once recieved a notice saying that I won a free trip to the mainland. And as part of the prize, a limo will pick me up at my home and drive me to Honolulu International Airport.
Of course, I was living on Maui at the time... that limo never did show up... :p

For a long time I kept getting mail for someone named Theodore Kaczynski. Eventually it stopped, though, I guess the Post Office fixed it.

My house still regularly gets mail from two sets of tenants who bailed on us four and two and a half years ago (their rent was current, though, so why they left no forwarding address and just up and left is beyond me). We marked it with return to sender for awhile, then about a year ago the mailman stopped bothering to pick it up, and we just started chucking it.

Please don't make generalizations about the people that work at the post office. We're not all crazy sociopaths with a secret desire to kill/maim/wound our co-workers and customers.

Smunkee, have you talked to the carrier at all, or have all your dealings been with the Postmaster/OIC/Supervisor? The carrier can sometimes do more, faster if they're told directly (sometimes, my supervisor forgets to tell me something until a week or so after she's talked to a customer).
As to getting the wrong mail, assuming your box is properly marked with the number, try putting a note in the mailbox (on the inside of the door is good) telling the carrier what names are supposed to be there. Any incorrect mail, you should just put it back in the mailbox (rubber banded together with a post-it note, paper clipped, marked "wrong address", etc) with the flag up.
As far as mail issues, I occasionally get mail in my box that is addressed to someone that hasn't lived in my apartment in over 2 years (because that's how long I've been living in this apartment). I just mark it up (with the appropriate acronym, just like if I was at work), and put it back into the outgoing mail box.

No matter how many times I have moved, I don't think any BILL has ever missed finding me!!!
Where I live, upon moving, we can pay a fee and mail addressed to the old residence will be delivered to the new one.
Make sure the address is correct and proper zip code?
Any big dogs scaring the postie away??

I have had 7 carriers in nearly 4 years, I have talked to all of them multiple times, and the guy at the post office and the guy in charge at the post office and the guy in charge at the downtown (big) post office and emailed the email thing and called the toll-free number.....nearly weekly. I don't know what else to do....move I guess.

You have probably already tried this, but:
No mail delivered (http://c001-iq-prod.responseondemand.com/eCustomer/iq/usps/request.do?create=kb:USPSFAQ&view()=c{269a63f0-57e2-11dc-51b6-000000000000})
Sometimes an individual address will not have any mail to deliver, this is normal and is not cause for concern. However, if you have not received mail either:
After two postal business days.
Regular occurrence on a specific day of the week for 2 or more weeks in a row
Please contact our customer service at 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777).
Good luck!!

Just mortgage payments that were never received by the mortgage company.
Go to the UPS store or the Post Office and rent a P.O. Box. It costs a bit, but it's more secure - less chance of theft and missed deliveries.
If someone else is keeping your mail, they, not the postman, are the ones' in trouble - it's a federal offense.
