Greatest Piece of Music Composed for a Broadway Show

IDF

We're discussing the music, not the lyrics, or other parts of the production.

I'm going with Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera

Something by Leonard Bernstein or Stephen Sondheim.

I'd have to agree with IDF on that piece, but a part of me wants to say "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, for reasons inexplicable.

oh the choices...

Les Miserable

Into the Woods

Phantom of the Opera
Dalmatia Cisalpina

"Sabbath Prayer" from Fiddler on the Roof. Sends shivers down my spine. Actually, all the music from that show sends shivers down my spine.

why are we seperating lyrics from music?

I vote for Ragtime in general. And defying gravity. And, despite not originally being for broadway, I'll give some weight to the overture for Lion King.

Easily Bernstein's West Side Story.

If we're just talking about the music and not the lyrics that go along with it, I would have to agree with IDF - The Music of the Night is superb.

But if we're talking words and lyrics I'd have to vote for Wilkommen from Cabaret.

Defying Gravity, narrowly beating This Jesus Must Die from Jesus Christ: Superstar.

I've migrated ISPs and browsers a few times and, in the middle of it all, NS and thus NSG just got forgotten.
I revived my nation recently, though, and I'm back to torment you all some more. :)
How've you been, anyway?

I totally thought I'd be the only one saying Defying Gravity...

Wicked doesn't seem all that well known, so you have a point there.
I liked March of the Witch Hunters second-best in it.

Thanks, by the way. How've you been?

Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera was not composed for a Broadway show. It was composed for a West End show just like most, if not all, of his shows including Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Les Misérables was originally written in French for the Paris theatre scene before it was translated and adapted for, yet again, Britain (though not directly the West End).

I've only heard recorded versions of both. I'm actually making plans to go see it live sometime in November.

I've been swell, yourself?

Pretty low at times, pretty good at others. Good to hear that you've been OK.

I managed to find a recording of the entire thing on Google Video so, whilst it's pretty poor quality, I've at least seen it. :)
I've also got the soundtrack. It's one of my hopes to go see it sometime soon.

There are several versions on Youtube, including from (I think) the Tony Awards...or some similar award show.

How many awards did it get, again? I once made a leaflet for English which had the number on, but I've lost it...

Hmmmm.

Easily Bernstein's West Side Story.

QFT. They just don't make them like that anymore. (Which isn't completely a bad thing, Bernstein being dead and all. I'd be freaked out if he wrote another musical.)
