I had a vague memory of chocolate and cheese and certain fruits being eaten together(not all mixed up) in cheese tastings. But I could be mistaken.

It's something they sell in Japan... it's... interesting. ;)

Personally, my all time favorite is chocolate and oranges, but... I will admit that a favorite snack of mine is Salt and Vinegar potato chips and Hersey's Chocolate.

out of those options i'd say chilli pepper. there's also mint, orange, raisins, turkish delight, hot water, vanilla icecream, caramel. the others in the list don't sound very good to me. except strawberries and banana but only if they're fresh and dipped in chocolate fondue.

Orange. I thought lemon was close enough, so that's how I voted. On second thought, a nice espresso goes very well with chocolate as well.

But right now peanut butter is in the lead, and that just doesn't seem right to me. Who in their right mind would spread peanut butter on their chocolate? Or am I missing something?

It is a pretty yummy combination, though. Too bad we pretty much don't have it here at all.

But the best taste to go with chocolate is banana and, above all, raspberry. Mmmmhhhh, the tartness of raspberry sauce accompanying a sticky sweet chocolate mud cake....

I had some chili pepper chocolate once it was surprisingly delicious and had a nice little kick to it.

But yeah, cherries are also good. As is a nice big glass of milk, but that's more for afterwards. Unless one is having dark chocolate, in which case some nice red wine goes well.

Oh, and where is mint on this list? After eights = delicious.
Or almonds/nuts in general?
Or rasins? (glossettes are delicious)

I think the other things I can think of (coffee, caramel et c) have already been mentioned.

Only one mention of vanilla? Vanilla hot chocolate is the best, though closely rivalled by Reese's peanut butter cups. Though if you ever find Reese's peanut butter caramel hot chocolate, DON'T DRINK IT. Seriously, ew. D:

It's an American thing, I think.

Back in the mothercountry, chocolate and orange goes together like... well, chocolate orange. But over here... it's all about the peanuts.

If I were more cynical, I'd say it was something to do with peanuts being such a cheap crop, and Americans being really easy to convince with advertising.

But, what I wouldn't do right now for a real Chocoloate Orange...

I haven't seen it in years, but I used to love a chocolate/orange liquor from Israel called "Sabra".

For me, the classic combination of cherries and chocolate is difficult to beat...if you're going to pair your chocolate with anything. As in a fabulous "Black Forest Cake" spiked with kirsch.

As unlikely as it sounds, that's very true. It takes a cheese with the strength of Roquefort to hold it's own with dark chocolate. The perfect compliment would be a glass of Cabernet.

Only so long as we mean coffee beans. Adding "syrup" or whatever else to to one's coffee beverage, however, is pure blasphemy.

And chili peppers...what kind? There are, after all, "chili peppers" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jalapeno) and then there are chili peppers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habanero).

Actually, what I was thinking was along the lines of the French custom of having a bit of dark chocolate along with your coffee. Of course, I agree that adding "syrup" or any such thing to one's coffee is blasphemy of the worst sort.

I need to move back to France :(

If it's chili you want, you should try Naga Jolokia peppers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naga_Jolokia_pepper), over 1000 times stronger than Jalapeno according to the Scoville scale. Hell, it's 1/2 the strength of standard pepper spray!

Food threads are usually the only ones I take seriously. Alternating bites of orange with dark chocolate is a heavenly experience.

It is the perfect light dessert to top off a snack of cucumber & tuna sandwiches.

Edit: Since orange wasn't a poll option, I pick human flesh. Licking chocolate off a nipple is pretty good eats.
