I just heard on WGAL (lancaster, PA) that 70 Airmen (Including officers) will be punished for the breach of security when live nukes were flown from North Dakota to Barksdale AFB in LA.

As soon as I have a link, I shall post it.

Good. Unauthorized transport of Nuclear Weapons is completely unacceptible. Those handling weapons should be held accountable.

It really depends on whether or not the ones handling the weapons knew if they were nuclear weapons. This is the military, I mean, you cant exactly punish a person because they were told, "You, put this box on that plane." and followed orders.
Its sort of how the military works. If everybody was busy asking "But whats IN the box?" then nothing would get moved around. Logistics is already hell without the people who're supposed to be moving stuff standing around asking questions.
Now, the logistics personell responsible for the transfer, who actually KNEW what was in the box, THEY should be punished. Quite severly too.

When you know that you COULD be handling Nuclear Weapons, you should check. Theses guys were handling Cruise Missiles that (supposedly) had their warheads removed. They should be checking and doublechecking every step of the way.

Uh, so you should check your mail JUST IN CASE you might accidentally be shipping anthrax?
Thats about how likely your average airforce serviceman is to handle nuclear weapons.
Its the MILITARY, the people handling boxes are trained to follow orders. If their officer tells them, "The warheads have been removed," you better be DAMN certain they havent before you start rummaging around in the boxes.

Like I said, its the officers responsibility. The guys hauling freight are doing just that and nothing more.

The enlisted men knew they were handling weapons that had (supposedly) had their weapons removed. They should have been checking constantly. Everyone should have been checking. The officers should have ordered the men to check. The men should have been using their common sense.

Yeah they need to do something about this and I hope it isn't a "slap on the wrist," type deal. That was a mistake no one should have made.

Yeah.

Didn't this happen like a month or two ago?

But it's still damn scary.

A not so funny thing about that....
is that apparently the airbase as LA is a take off point for the middle east.
Let's hope they didn't "accidentally" ;) fly those nukes to Louisiana.

cause the world will never, ever, ever, ever, ever forgive those persons or entities that use nukes next. ever

Somehow I think they would have been far more careful with that and I'm sure the B-52 weapons system would have recognized the missiles as armed with warheads before they ever fired.
