Lately, I'm playing old classic games and I'm still amazed by the fun factor.

The graphics aren't that great, but the gameplay...

Currently I'm trying a Colonisation clone.

I've some links to download such free such games:

Colonisation Clone: http://www.freecol.org/

Original Carrier Command: http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=176

I'll note Tyrian 2000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_(computer_game)) (see links at the bottom for getting it), a vertical shooter with rather nice gameplay and a pretty amusing story (the last part is madness). It can however be hard to get working properly on non-DOS based Windows versions. It can be ran - though this requires decent hardware if you want it to work perfectly - in dosbox, though.

Graphics are meaningless. Good gameplay transcends.

Master of Orion II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion_II:_Battle_at_Antares), and Merchant Prince II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machiavelli:_The_Prince).

I also enjoy many old Atari games. I think there's one called Heist, or Thief, Robber, or something, where you go around robbing banks. That was immensely enjoyable.

Zork! :)

Incidently I was thinking about doing a topic on something similar today. Odd.

Anyway, I've recently been revisiting the old point and click adventures I used to play.

Simon the Sorceror, Monkey Island and Broken Sword are all great (plus more!)

Nintendo's good for old games. I was playing that system before SuperNes!

though there is something to be said for a good game that also has good visuals, at least sometimes. not a necessary condition of having a good game, but pretty awesome as a bonus.

also, graphics can necessary for particular types of game - ones that just wouldn't work as well with atari pixels and colors, let alone in a text-based form.

My friend and I just versed each other at 2-player Tetris for about an hour.

Tetris on a SNES emulator.

Well you do need a certain level of quality to be able to understand what's going on in the game. But other than that it doesn't have much of an affect on how good the game is.
