I'm not a huge horror movie fan but I love 28 Days Later. Its actually thought provoking unlike the generic slasher film. Too bad 28 Weeks sucked.

It's not really a favourite in any way, but I really like the St Francisville Experiment. It's utter crap, but my flat mate watched it during my first year at uni and wouldn't even sleep in the same room as the video. That alone made the film for me (that and watching it the next night with another flat mate when I knew where all the "scary" bits were and saying boo over her shoulder making her scream. It was funny!!:D)

Sweet jesus yes! Like all of 'em. The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, Army of Darkness. Anything by George A. Romero. I just bought a bunch more the other day. Friday the 13th, especially the Manhatten one. I've sworn to myself my first two sons are to be named Jason and Freddy. The third I'm having a hard time choosing between Michael or Leatherface.

Right now, I'd have to say Ringu (Ring). The orginal Japanese version is creepy as all hell. Although I do admit that after watching the movie, I was left wondering just what would happen if someone pushed "Pause" or power when she was coming through the screen. Would the ghost have gotten stuck half way through?

I've sworn to myself my first two sons are to be named Jason and Freddy.
Don't. Don't do that unless you want your son to don a hockey mask to repay you after having to put up with jokes about that every damn Friday the 13th and Halloween. :p

Near Dark, this particular film is a forgotten masterpiece that had the bad fortune of opening two weeks after Lost Boys, but it's the best vampire movie ever made.

The original Japanese of The Grudge (Ju-On) and The Ring (Ringu) are far more gritty than the sanitised hollywood remakes, Also can i recomend a Korean horror movie R-Point, excelent!!!! Not that hollywood misses the mark all the time, The Shining is one of the scariest pieces of film making around.

Have you ever seen The Resurrected, with Chris Sarandon of Fright Night fame? It's a delightfully faithful adaptation of The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and one I think you'll enjoy.

Never heard of it. But then again the story didn't scare me either, so I doubt a movie based on it would.

Oh comon, it was alot better than the 1979 version.

That's not particuarly hard...

(NB: didn't see the remake, but apparently the "horror" in the first one comes from losing money on a property. Not an incredibly scary thing for a teenager).

Anyway.

Sci-fi horror: Alien and Alien3 (yes I actually enjoyed the latter)

Urbanoia: Deliverence and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Not the remake, which was just dire), and to a lesser extent The Hills Have Eyes, though it hasn't aged particuarly well.

Supernatural: Possession and Ring.

Slashers: Switchblade Romance, (Generally not a sub-genre I enjoy)

"Gorno": Audition

Campy horror fun: The Doctor Phibes films, Theatre of Blood, The Evil Dead films, Slither.I can go on and on.

Looking back, I can see university and student life were worthwhile....

:p

(Edit: I don't believe I just a post on horror without mentioning one of my favouritest directors eva, David Cronenberg :))

Isle of the Dead, with Boris Karloff. Wonderfully atmospheric movie done in 1945, set during the 1st Balkan War. No monsters, no gore, a minimum of on-screen nastiness, but far better done than 99.9% of horror.

Horror movies are about the only genre not really represented in my dvd collection. I just don't really care for them. Though having said that, I do like 28 Days Later, and the sequel but to a lesser extent. For those who liked the 28...Later films, check out the shorts here: http://uk.youtube.com/user/filmmakerdotcom

And to whoever said it, of course there'll be a third. 28 Weeks Later made over $50 million at the box office. Plus Danny Boyle's said he wants to direct it and has thoughts on what the story will be like (apparently he wants to move it to Russia - I'd be quite interested in seeing what they'd do re. the Rage virus and its effectiveness in an extreme cold environment).

Seems like all horror movies have been reduced to the following format:

Lead up to a scare
Nothing happens
OF FUCK MONSTYER IN YUR FACE!!!

Ignore atmosphere, suspense, humor, and buckets of gore. The previous format was much easier to do, and now we're swimming in an ocean of terminally unimaginative directors. *cough* Rob Zombie *cough* . Luckily I've been outsourcing to Japan lately.

Silent Hill was the last decent American horror movie I saw, and considering all they had to do was Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V what was in the game, they still somehow managed to fuck it up.

Clowns are too scary for horror movies. Look at the few half-hearted attempts:

'Killer Klowns from Outer SPace'. Campy B-movie.
'It'. Made-for tv Mini-series.
'Shakes The Clown'. Bobcat Goldthwait attempting to act. Probably the scariest clown movie of all. :p

Yep yep I totally agree. Currently Japan are the masters of the horror genre. Horror really is in the head, HP Lovecraft I think could teach some modern film makers a trick or seven.

Funny, for me it's not about the popcorn... actually it's about how much popcorn I eat during the film.

the less I eat, the more engaged into the film I am...

and the more popcorn ending up on the floor/chair... the better the scare. :D

The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, Night of the Hunter, Silence of the Lambs. Vincent Price is one of my favorite actors, his movies aren't always great but I like to watch them because of Price. Yeah, that's because Japanese Horror movies have some of the most risible plots conceivable.
"Of course! The ghost wasn't really evil, she was just calling up random people on the phone, leaving nonsensical messages, and then killing them off, because she wanted someone to find her body! It makes perfect sense!"
And then, something happened with a jaw breaker and demonic possession, but by this point I'd gotten so bored I was posting on NS.
And now they're doing an American remake, ugh.

The only horrifying thing about the Ring was when the horse jumped off the boat , the girl I was going with started laughing like she was possessed. Afterwards she returns to her timid self and explains: "I don't like horses, my neighbor's would stand at my window in the middle of the night and stare at me."

That right there was scarier than the entire movie.

I think Brazil is more of a comedy in the traditional sense of the word but I could be wrong. I always thought of Brazil as a horror-tragedy blend - it has some pretty gorey stuff in it but is also that strange contrast of romance and passion and angels :p I love Brazil - classic film. Never scared me, though, except to think that maybe the future might be like that one day.
