What IS the red triangle for?

Hi there, Generalites!

Due to a problem with my spam filter, I'm once again getting e-mail from Jolt about people using that little red triangle to report posts.

Please stop doing this.

The "report post" function sends an e-mail to every Moderator and Administrator on Jolt; including people who have nothing to do with NationStates. Most, if not all, of the NationStates staff have these e-mails automatically shunted into their spam mailboxes. We don't read them. Even though I'm currently getting them, I delete them without reading them.

If there's a post that you feel should be reported, use the Moderation Forum, that's what it's there for. That's why it was created in the first place.

Thank you for your time.

I didn't notice the red triangle until just now.

Just use the moderation forum to report bad threads.

When Hack put up that sticky note, I sat with my mouse pointer hovering over the red triangle on his post for a good 5 minutes wondering if I should report his post to everyone for a laugh.

I just wasn't sure it would be taken as particularly funny to anyone aside from myself but it's a curious reaction I have to anything that says 'don't...'

It's for the time that Demongod Deathspam is released from prison and only the efforts of every Jolt mod can defeat him!

Just kidding -- the only thing it does is tick off a bunch of mods, many of them unrelated. Go view http://forums.jolt.co.uk/index.php and notice how many boards they have. Realize just how many boards will have all their mods notified that Spammy McSpammerson flamed a fellow NationStates person. That's why the red triangle is not to be used.

You'd think Jolt's top people would get rid of it, though...

The red triangle is what communist homosexuals were forced to wear in Germany from 1938 to 1945.

Yet he doesn't say why it's there if it's not to be used. Is there a technical or legal reason why it has to be there? If we're not to use it, wouldn't the simpler solution be to remove it altogether?

This is not a complaint or questioning of wisdom, just curious as to why it remains and I guess there has to be a good reason.

I dunno if vBulletin ever intended to have these many forums with so many independent groups moderating each section. For smaller forums, it's fine.

I would think that you could edit the source of the message board, but I don't know as I've never used vBulletin or any popular forum software.

Of course. The government knew that no right-minded homosexual would go out in public with such a thing (because we're too vain), so they made them wear the things all the time. Homosexuals all over Russia decided it was better to hide in closets rather than be embarassed by what would seem to be an error in accessorizing on their part. And when they finally decided to start wearing different clothes that would actually match, they'd "come out" of the closet, whereupon they would be attacked by Red Guards and small children for being gay.

(That was totally improvised by me... and it's 1:20a where I'm at, too)

It always reminded me of the road hazard triangle that truckers set up. Maybe it's to denote the hazard in progress that are these forums?

it does seem to me, that jolt, with all the computer rocket scientists they must surely have, if it really annoyed THEM THAT MUCH, they ought to be able to get rid of it.

i've never installed or modified vbulliten or ubb or any of the others myself either, and am certainly no rocket scientist about them myself, i wouldn't even have the slightest idea where to begin, but i've been to enough diversity of forums, and to vb and ubb's own websites enough to know, that both are VERY modifiable by their top admins.

I say leave the Red triangle in there.. It works like a filter.

I like your proposal anyway.

It is like a nuclear button of power over the Mods.

What we really need to do is wait for a n00b to ask the question 'How come my posts are being moderated' when they've less than 10 posts and reply saying you have to hit the red triangle 50 times to fix that.

Not that I'd ever do that, or encourage anyone to do that.

It doesn't annoy jolt, it just annoys the various mods on jolt, who one assumes, can do little more than tell us to stop using the damn triangles of doom.

It would be a piece of cake to remove that triangle:
1. Delete the file report.php
2. Delete 1 line of HTML from the file showthread.php search for the text report.php to find the right line to delete.

Other Jolt forums still use it. Not every forum has a Moderation-type forum (indeed, most don't). I can't stop them. However, roughly 80% of the reports I've been receiving have been from this forum. And since I posted that sticky, the number I've received has dropped off markedly.

And the red triangle means political enemies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_concentration_camp_badges).

I thought it was like on ordinance survey maps and clicking it would tell you where the nearest youth hostel was, just in case you were using NS in an internet cafe say in an unfamiliar city and you lost track of the time and needed somewhere to stay. I must admit it did seem strange that they'd have a button just for that.
