Best Thread of All Time (well, since 2003)

I keep hearing people talking about the Golden Age of NSG, when the threads were multiple, the posts insightful, and the merciful Mods kept order in the realm. Being a relatively new nation, who is controlled by an user who only started at the tail-end of this Siglo de Oro, I naturally feel left out.
So now you smarty-pants are going to have to back up your claim. What was the best NSG thread to ever hit the Web? Even if you haven't been here that long, which do you consider the best?

Any number of long-lived threads back in mid-2005... When Legless Pirates and such were still around.

The atmosphere was great.

Why don't you go to the forum options and look at all of those threads, then? Or does this forum only log for a year?

If it logs for multiple years, then I suggest you look for yourself. The threads today just don't compare to the quality threads we had back in those days. Those days when we could make threads discussing virtually any topic without them being closed, even if they were about somebody's personal business.

Sigh.

I don't know, between then and now I don't see much of a change with NSG. The changes are perhaps with II. I never really go into NS so I wouldn't know there but NSG is very similiar to what it was then, sadly.

When I checked the control panel, it only let me go up to a year back. :(

"Show All Threads" takes you back to the forum migration in July 2004 or so. There are some imported threads earlier than that, but technical issues ate a bunch of 2003/2004 threads.

Not having been a fan of General in the olden days, I can't give a fair comparison. The few that I do remember (featuring the likes of The Red Arrow and other trolls) don't fill me with happy memories of times gone by.

Honestly I'm not too nostalgic for the old days. The only thread that truly sticks out in my mind as being awesome was the babe thread.

Edit: Oh also, Der Fuhrer Dyszel's "If I had a Penis" thread. Unfortunately, the mods stupidly changed the name of that one to "If I was a man," which was not what she was talking about at all, as the subject was simply what she would do if she woke up one day to find that she had a penis.

Found it! A thread where I and Bottle were having a histrionic "fight" over which sort of cell in the nervous system was better. It had such wonderful quotes as:

"Look, just because the voltage dependence of activation for my channels is slightly shifted doesn't mean you get to pick on me. Not all of us can become maximally permiable to current flow every 2 miliseconds. So I inactivate from time to time. I'm not a machine, dammit!

I always knew that's what this was really about for you. You're looking for some younger, more conductive membrane so you can run off and make a bunch of cute little low-resistance vesicles together. Why don't you just admit that it's because I'm fat?!"

"It's not so much that you're fat, it's that you have layer upon layer of concentric lipid-bilayer deposits wound around your projections the removal of which you see as a fate worse than apoptosis."

"I'll have you know that there are plenty of folks out there who like a little insulation on an axon. Not everybody is attracted to little anorexic processes with all their membrane hanging out for the world to see. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering the unmyelinated hussies you hung around with before we met."

"Unmyelinated is just an ugly word bitter glial-dependants such as yourself use for those whose potentials last longer and are slower to climax."

"As if I would ever be jealous of some puny little fibers that can hardly maintain an impulse for a dozen microns! Maybe some easily-impressed immarture membranes can be driven to threshold by your weak EPSPs, but it takes a lot more to induce conformational changes in my voltage-gated channel proteins.

Oh, and you know that time I claimed to be repetatively firing? I was faking it."

"Of course you were faking it, as you fake your entire existence as an independent ectodermal descendant. Not even barely had we started burrowing our way to create the neural fold and crest, when you went off cavorting with the paraxial mesoderm, you perverted somite lover!"

Now, that was the best thread ever and that cemented Bottle as one of my favourite posters. Fun times...

A long time ago there was a thread in Moderation about somebody posting porn in II. One guy commented it was bad porn and he could post better, to which somebody else said: 'I bet you don't dare to do that.'

He not only did that, but he posted it in the original thread in Moderation fully knowing it would cost him his nation.

Probably one of the best ever.:p

Communism vs. Capitalism was perhaps one of the greatest threads I have had the opportunity to participate in. Very epic. Facts and figures, historical comparisons, a massive discussion. The truly ultimate battle with Fiscal Conservatives, Anarcho-Capitalists, Corporatists, Liberals, Communists, Socialists and Anarcho-Socialists giving thier all to decide one of the greatest political questions of all time.

My personal preference is "Het Nederlandse topic": http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=278280
The archive contains the first thread of that nature, which started on the 23rd of august 2003. It discusses any Dutch affairs on Nationstates and RL The Netherlands.

We're currently on thread number five, "Het vijfde Nederlandse Topic!": http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=392194 , which started on the 25th of january 2005.

yeah, it was so often hard to keep up with threads back then. if you didn't happen to catch the thread early, in a few hours it would be too big to bother with (too big to read and the arguements too entrenched...)

these days its slower, i believe.

and for me it would be the threads like the (first) Nu-Hippies thing Kanabia came up with, which wasn't about anything at all, but still went on for ages talking about total shit. or the threads about Tink and me getting e-married, which again went on for ages. both just examples of part of the great social aspect we had then.

That, quite simply, is awesome. Neuroscience ain't my thing but by God that's funneh :D

I remember the Nu-hippies thread, and a political haiku one that was particularly cool. Personally, though, my favourite two were the Corrupt a Wish threads and the Reject Royalty, mainly because they are what involved me in NSG. I miss Chicken Pi, TCG, LP, Choqulya, Peech, Occidio Multus (I think) and so many others thanks to those threads. And it introduced Joc, who is a dude.

There never were golden years; that's the thing.

Some things have changed a bit...but not much. For example, there were a lot more openly national socialists back in my day. Example: Parratoga (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Parratoga). There was also Marathon who got his nation revived after being deleted for rule infringements, only to get in trouble again. Or it went down something like that.

Since they were legal back then, there were plenty more word games. And chat threads. The first one I remember that lasted was "The Volcano." And how I hated those kinds of threads taking up all the bandwidth on our shaky forum servers back then.

There was also the red arrow around those days. Probably starting in 04 (?) if any of you had the pleasure of dealing with his threads and his many reincarnations.

Though I don't remember much in 04 or 05 despite that. Or even 06. But trends more or less repeat themselves. Now instead of openly Nazi posters we have the vehemently anti-Muslim posters.

There's still the conservatives, libertarians, socialists, and their ilk around.

There's still evolution threads. Still global warming ones. Still threads on gay marriage. On religion. On Bush. Maybe less Iraq threads, but still plenty criticizing US foreign policy. And so on. Though one thing's for certain, there weren't :fluffle: back in my day.
