As a general rule, if it's fashionable, it's probably stupid.

I normally wear boardshorts to the beach, but I've noticed that more and more people my age wear them with the waistbands of boxer shorts showing, for example, Calvin Classics.

Is it fashionable or should I just keep to just boardshorts?

I'm still waiting for naked and muddy to come back into fashion. :)

I don't want to invoke the cigarette-spewing spectre of Denis Leary here, but underwear is suuposed to go underneath the pants. "That's why it's called under-fuckin'-wear.

Swimsuits were invented to spare people wandering around in soggy underwear.

Are these people also wet? Because chances are that if they're dumb enough to wear underwear underneath their swimsuits, they're too dumb to take a swim without endangering themselves.

The beaches i visit, few people wear anything, regardless of age.

It's a stupid fad, stick with what you're doing. Of course it could just be that you're getting old and turning into a stick in the mud.

Boardshorts do have a tendancy to be pulled off if you get wrapped up in a barrel. It's a long way back to shore when you have to paddle your surfboard naked. long long way. And boardwax ain't the nicest thing to get stuck in your pubes.
Underwear also offer a little bit more protection on reefs (and every little bit helps!). Or at the very least hide your nether-regions when the shorts rip on said reef.

I agree. However, it does look a bit stupid when you can see someone's boxers waistband over the top of their boardshorts. I don't see th epoint - who care if your underwear is from Calvin Klein, to use the example given. In Malta I saw loads of teenagers dressed like that, and it just looks weird. Although it probably is fashionable.

Funny - although I've seen loads of people do it here, it was in Malta that I first noticed that.

I do agree with the othe poster who said about underwear, boardshorts and surfing. However, I still think it looks a bit weird - nobody would go to the beach literally in their boxer shorts or boxerbriefs, but they quite happily show them off above their boardshorts.

It looks like you can't afford clothes that fit properly, or a belt.

I have to say that it doesn't look as gross as the whaletail, but I think that if you are going to wear boxers, why wear them with the waistabnd showing - who cares what brand of boxers you wear?

And some of the othe reaons don't exactly persuade me - I was talking to one of my friends about this after we went to the beach, and one of his reasons was that if you wore your boxers under boardshrots then you could go to the beach and then just strip of your clothes, excluding your boxers, and put on your boardshorts - so you don't have to bother with fubling beneath a towel. But I would personally never stand there in my boxers on the beach - and get changed beforehand anyway.

I think that, despite the majority of us thinking it looks stupid, it probably is fashionable. However, i still wouldn't do it - I don't even wear my boxers showing over my trousers, like most teenagers do. Maybe I'm already behind the times!

And perhaps you don't know many surfers or water-sporters, since many boardshorts makers had to get rid of their velcro flies because the surfers' pubes got caught in them as seemingly most surfers don't wear underwear under swimmingwear either.

You sound like a sheep incapable of making your own decisions. You should do what you want. To hell with everyone else.
