I understand that there are older paintings (cave art and Australian rock paintings come to mind.), but this sample is curious because 1, it is inside a manufactured structure (unlike cave walls or covered rock ledges etc.,). 2, It doesn’t ‘appear’ to be of anything recognizable (such as the animals or a stick humans or images of body parts etc.,) like other pre-civilization artworks and paintings are.
Keep in mind that this painting (below) is at least TWO times older than anything in Ancient Egypt or the Mycenaean’s art work that you might be thinking of, who ever painted this did it before animal domestication or plant farming was discovered/invented, and three thousand years before anything like recorded history would occur. It’s three millennium older than the Ice man for crying out loud ;)
So what is it? Could it really be as simple as decorative colors for the sake of decorated colors? Or is there a pattern or picture hidden in it that I simply can’t see yet?

What say you? Who wants to guess what it is? link (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071011/en_nm/syria_painting_dc)
