What Do You Drive?

Lame Bums

Sort of related to my "How Fast do You Drive?" thread I made a few weeks back. Please, unless you actually drive a vehicle (car, van, motorcycle, whatever) don't bother telling us about how bad vehicles are on the environment or the merits of walking.

Show us pictures if you have them, ok thanks.

But I guess I'll go first: I have two cars at the moment. I just bought an '01 Toyota Echo to replace my '91 Buick LeSabre. The Echo gets unbelievable gas mileage, as well as being a standard. (It gets about 40 miles to the gallon, and no it's not a hybrid). Has about 81,000 miles on it, bought it a month ago with 80-something on it. The '91 has about 150,000, and all the small stuff inside (buttons and such) are falling apart. The car is also starting to rust around the corners - but the motor works great (albeit being a gas hog. For a 3800 producing a mere 170 horsepower it sure eats gas... I averaged 18 with it.)

I have a few cars I'd like to have, though, although this is by no means an exhaustive list: 1987 Buick Grand National, 1989 Geo Metro, any old-model Volkswagen Beetle, and an old Porsche 911.

So uh...yeah, your turn.

The LN3 was replaced by the L27 in 1991-1992 and produced 170 hp (127 kW) from 1992 onward, this engine was referred to as the Series I 3800.

I had a 92 Sunfire.....in like 95 for about 6 months, whenever it would frost outside the throttle would stick and it would rev the engine so much warming up that it would die.....after about 20 minutes it would calm down and I could go somewhere.

I also had a Pontiac Grand Am in like 2000 that would die every 3 miles, sit for 30 minutes, start again, drive for 3 miles, die.......

it was some sensor.... it's throttle would stick too if the temp was below freezing.

Pontiacs are full of crap, 'cept for late 70's early 80's firechickens, i mean fire birds.

There is a pecking order on the road. It's almost never followed. I believe it goes as follows:

Rock Bottom: Geo Metro's, Suzuki Swift, Most Pontiac's.
Pretty Damn Low: Chevy Cavalier, Honda Civic (the riced-out kind with 30lbs of NOS stickers and an inverted 747 wing for a spoiler)
Below Average: Toyota Corolla, most other compact sedan's that nevertheless get amazing gas mileage.
Average: Mid-size cars. Mazda 626, Camry, Accord, that sort of thing.
Above Average: Larger cars. Crown Victoria, most Buicks and Cadillacs, and such. Most SUV's also belong in this category.
Pretty Damn High: Fast cars. BMW M3's, Nissan 350Z's, Honda Preludes, that sort of thing.
Tip-Top: Anything totally amazing and wins tons of man-points. Porsche, Ferrari, etc. Also I think big rig's fall into this category since they're not going anywhere fast but by God I don't think anyone would want to tangle with them.

Any vehicle automatically moves up one class if it is a manual transmission. If it's a nice car with a slush box it loses (see my sig, actually).

Here's the problems. Riced-out Civic's are just...wrong. Honda Civics are not fast. End of story. And SUV drivers do not own the road. Ugh. Sometimes they make me wish I had a grenade launcher on the front of my car.

I drive a '98 Ford Escort ZX-2 (named Icarus). I've had it for a few months, and aside from getting rear-ended and pushed into the car in front, it's holding out pretty well.

The back is pretty trashed, and so is the front passenger seat. The trunk, however, is totally empty...

Decorations: 2 parking passes (right side: parking pass for school; left side: parking pass for NERV... don't ask), soon to have a bumper-sticker ("My other vehicle is an Evangelion")... I'm such an NGE nerd, but it is totally the ONLY good anime.

Nothing yet. I'll be saving my money to hopefully buy a Prius, but I'd also go with either a Civic or a Corolla. Of course, I don't plan on buying a car for a while, at least not until I get an internship. Otherwise, I'd have the satisfaction of seeing all my money go down the drain, completely eliminating the reason why I'd get a car in the first place...

An '03 Toyota 4Runner I call "Cristobel." Sweet lady, she is. Bought her used, but equipped nicely. Power everything. Tilt-and-slide moonroof, seat heaters, compass in the rear view mirror. Tons of storage boxes, hooks and keepers. I keep the battery topped up with a solar panel. Very popular locally, I see 4Runners everywhere. Funny story: I found myself in a pack of 4Runners on the freeway here a few days ago. Her previous owner kept her like a museum piece but I've given her a life.

I've dropped about $1,000 in mods on her but they all have to do with performance and fuel economy, which was a not-too-shabby 17mpg to begin with.

Condensator installed in the air line. Traps particulates, keeps them from recirculating back into the engine, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Improved the fuel economy by an estimated 15%.

Conversion to flex-fuel. I flip a switch and I can go back and forth from E-85 to straight petrol, but I stick with the E-85 for both the economy and tax breaks. Oregon gives you a 40¢ per gallon income tax rebate on biofuels and E-85 runs about 107 octane. Better-than-supreme octane for less-than-regular price. With the tax rebate my fuel runs around $1.90/gallon. I'm already halfway to paying for the price of the conversion.

And finally, just scored some Pulstar plugs. 1 million watts per firing, supposed to burn fuel more efficiently and give you more torque, more horsepower, better mileage and better acceleration. I pull a horse trailer with this baby, you bet I'm gonna prick up my ears when I hear "more torque."

Coming up next: GPS. I'm thinking about customizing the silver details on the exterior to copper.

What? Because we don't have fancy cars? (well, I do live at the poverty line, but that's me...)

most of us have better things to spend our money on.

In fact this is the first car I have ever bought that had less than 100K miles on it.

It's pretty nice for me, even if most people think it's a cheapo. It's still under warranty (first for me on that too)

In fact......it's nearly the first car I have ever had that is less than 10 years old, from 95-97 I had cars less than 5 years old a couple of times, but they were previously wrecked......so not so nice.

It still amazes me how the big gas guzzling cars in america have huge engines and so little power! The euro boxes and eastern tin cans we have over here in lil ole UK kick out almost twice as much HP per litre. A boring old Renault 19.

I hardly ever drive, though. I live in a smallish suburban town (15,000 people), so most things are within walking distance (it's a ten minute walk to the main street where there's the bank, baker, supermarket...). And when I need to go into Paris, there's a train station about a ten minute walk from where I live. I hop on the train, it takes me into the heart of Paris, and from there there's an excellent metro system.

So I walk whenever I can, or take the train. I rarely need to drive.

Remeber, higher end american cars like the Z06 and the Ford GT and the Saleen mustang, you might think they would suck because of how much they weigh, but never fear, one of those cars I listed can eat a supercar on a track.

ANd yeah, Asian cars and Euroboxes seem to be better on HP-Liter, my civic does 2.0 L 197 hp (147 kW) I4, so its not to bad. Fucker revs to 8800 if u let it.

I have two bikes, both custom built.

One is an old ten-speed Peugeot frame that has new 700x30 tandem wheels and a new 6 gear hub cassette. I generally use this for the kids, shopping, hauling stuff, etc, so it has 12 speeds and 3 different trailer hitches.I also put some big chopper handlebars on it so that I'm sitting straight up while riding. The annoyance of the increased wind resistance is made up for by the vastly increased comfort. Most of you are motorists, so you wouldn't even know what I was talking about with the tech. specs, but I will say it has the drive train of a racing bike.

My other bike is a fixed gear road bike with bullhorn handle bars. I rode it today for the first time. Still getting the hang of it. I made this one myself, except the wheels. I had those done by a professional.

I drive one of the most reliable cars made - a Honda Civic CX (year 2000). It has dents, dings, scrapes, scratches and a window that won't roll down. The only time it wouldn't start it needed a new battery.

Yep, those hondas are crazy, my 1st car was a 1993 Honda Accord, I got it with 200,000 some miles on it. Now my GF drives it, and the odo stopped lsat yeat at 340,000, still going fine

This is like the fourth or fifth thread in which you've posted pics of your car.

Not that I blame you. If I owned that car, I'd probably post it in as many threads as I could too. :D

The only thing truly worth driving.

Titleist Pro V1s.

Run and tell that.

I hear you! :D

But yeah, how many of us out here actually drive a manual?

Right here! 6 speed and I double clutch on every shift!

What a waste of effort. I just leave the clutch in the whole time. Granted I will kill mine within five thousand miles... but hey while it lasts, less work for the win. :p

Edit: Two of us out of the entire forum? What a bunch of wimps. :(

IN the UK most of us - I only use auto because i'm disabled. steering, braking and accelerating without using my feet is one thing - adding a clutch and geers - well just a bit too much.

When I got my first adapted car it took me about 2 days to get used to hand controls but much longer to get used to not having gears. I still try to change occasionally on hills.

This seems silly considering the amount of adapting you've had to do, but I'll tell it anyway...

I drive a lot of rented mini vans for work as well as full size vans, mostly domestic (American) that have a tree mounted shifter. So when I get into my manual Vanagon afterwards right after parking I end up forcibly jamming the wipers on because that's where the selector would be to put it in park.

Same token, if the transmission doesn't shift 'in time' I might lift off the gas in preparation of shifting myself...

As for me, I drive a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier. It leaks a few liquids (clutch fluid is by far the worst), but it still makes lots of power (for a 95 Cavalier). It is much too foggy inside the car. Anybody know how to reduce that?

Leave a large container of Damp-Rid on the floor overnight.

Dump the accumulated water out in the morning, and repeat each night until you've got the excess moisture out of the interior.

Probably only because Safeway, Costco and Wal-Mart are the only places that carry it, and I haven't been to one in years.

Sweet, I now know a solution to a problem I didn't know existed! I love it when that happens!

I wouldn't know bout any of those, never set foot in them myself, especially walmart....I have no desire to support the communist Chinese.

CVS, Target, or damn near a thousand places on-line has the stuff.

I've got a blue 2004 Subaru Forester, pretty much unadorned except for the obligatory college parking permit. However, if anybody reading this ever actually sees it, you'll know that it's mine. :D

Do you have any idea how many Foresters are in college campus parking lots these days...? (I like Subarus, though...)

Meh, I haven't seen that many around here. However, there's a much better reason that my car is identifiable as mine - I'd just prefer not to post it on a public forum.

Whoa, transaxle fulid O_O, ive never heard of that leaking on any vehical beforeIts not too bad. It uses regular brake fluid and the reservoir is pretty accessible. It takes about 2 weeks to get bad (ie I lose my clutch), so I top it off every Saturday.

A 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante. The exterior's a little battered, but it runs great and does what I need it to do (22 mpg city driving -- not bad for a car that old!). Originally I loathed the thing because it was such a piece when I got it, but I fixed it up pretty nicely and I've grown quite attached to it. It has quite the personality, let me tell you.

Me. I don't like autos.

My car only came as a six speed manual (hence the 6 in GTi6).

I might be selling it in the next few months and investing the money for the duration of my stay here, not sure yet.

96 Thunderbird 4.6 .. a freakin Ford.. boooo. Nah.. I mean I don't like Fords.. but it drives good. Just got it back on the road recently. Before that I drove a Pontiac Grand Am SE 87 V6 for around 11 yrs. and 100k plus miles.. only problem I had with it was the computer module. Which I had to replace twice.

I drive a 1990 BMW 735i, and it's a pretty great car. Next year I hope to buy an 850i; now that is a damn fine car.
