On Saturday the wife and I were at a Costco just a quarter mile from this explosion. It shook the Costco and the lights went out for a second. Just wanted to share this video of the event so you can see for yourself. I haven't seen this kind of explosion since my military days and even then it was only in combat.

Background: Atlas Steel Co. Fire started near a propane truck with 30,000 lbs of liquid propane and also had 3 large tanks on the property that held probably another 30,000 lbs of propane. Just for scale these people in the video were about 6 blocks away. No one died but 5 were injured one severely.

The "Holy shit," in the video sums it up pretty well.

My brother saw the chemical factory that happened in KC a few months back, too. He took pictures of the smoke, but I can't find them.

Only explosion close enough to me (and big enough) to be worth mentioning was 9/11. And with any luck, it'll stay that way.

Yeah propane'll do that! You can see the shockwave on the camera too unless that's just the person juttering with it and I always love how you see it before you hear it but that's a big, big, big bang.

I wonder if those guys in the second video real close still have eyebrows?

I'd rather funnel that explosion in a tube, and then shoot myself out of it.

I went down and looked at the scene this afternoon. Utter destruction was the word for the day.

This shook the house as I am only 3 miles away myself. What is near the propane tanks is a large electrical station that feeds the foundry. Possible electric ignition of a leak while the guy was filling the foundry's tanks from the tanker truck.

It has to be one of the biggest explosions I had ever heard and seen. The video's do not do it justice as for the noise.

Static electricity generated by just clothes can ignite petrol fumes, so I'm not surprised these things don't blow up more often.
