This afternoon I discovered that someone I thought was my friend had hacked my account and been editing posts of mine (I don't know how many, as I've posted so many messages on this forum). I'm not going to dig up the posts that I've found by linking to them, but suffice to say he's sick in the head and what I ORIGINALLY stated stands but any changes (poorly-written changes too) to suggest I support any form of abuse is completely nuts.

In any case, I've changed my password and disowned him as a friend.

So this is just a warning to everyone: Do NOT use a password that someone can easily guess, even if so few people who know you know about your account. Use one that has nothing to do with you (so no birthdates, words associated with you, pet names, etc.)

Speaking as one who works with computer security...
Regularly changing your password helps to.

You know what kind of password would be good? Something along the lines of this:
D∂∆Hª£2fc¢¶jE@5πœ
only longer.

I like to use a random password generator.

you disowned a friend over something that stupid?

Is it really that big of a deal?

Well, one could argue that if you can't trust your friend over something small, what happens when you need to trust them with something big/important?

generally, a prank doesn't really determine trust.

Yes, I break onto my roommates facebook account and leave random messages when I get bored. He does the same to me. Yet, when his grandma died, I got him shitfaced, took care of him for the night, and surprised him by showing up at the funeral 2 hours away.
And yes, he was there when my friend died to take care of me. And when another friend of mine went in for major surgery and I couldn't find out if he was okay or even alive for a week

Oh, absolutely. I was only saying it could be argued, not that I necessarily agree with that position. Though, I think it'd depend what the person in particular edited posts to say/made new posts to say. If it was anything that could get the account owner banned/suspended/generally in trouble, then while I'd not disown said friend, I'd have a good talk with him. Cause... getting friends in trouble with the mods on games/forums/etc. is just not cool. Though, that doesn't sound like this situation.

yeah. Granted, I've gotten my friends in trouble a few times inadvertantly, and done what I needed to do to make it up to them, but, as you said, that doesn't seem to be the case...and even if it were, I don't see that as any reason to abandon a friendship

You disowned him? I hope you had planned to leave something cool for him as inheritance and then you told him "Remember the PS3 you were getting in case of my death? Forget it! You ain't seeing a single DVD!"

You know, if he's not getting it... I'm looking for a place in somebody's will. :D

I've got a friend like that. He's a good friend, but if he started playing NS, and knew that I was, he would likely pull some stunt like that. I probably wouldn't "disown" him over it, but I'd surely threaten him with grave bodily harm.

Something interesting: if you type your password on this forum, and don't put it in quotes, it will automatically hide it. For example, here's my password: ******

It hides! Everyone should try it.:)

Ignoring the fact that this is pretty much a blog thread, and not warranted...

So this is just a warning to everyone: Do NOT use a password that someone can easily guess, even if so few people who know you know about your account. Use one that has nothing to do with you (so no birthdates, words associated with you, pet names, etc.)

...this is pretty much common sense and plastered on every sign up site you see nowadays.
