Yay! Today is the official Swedish cinnamon bun day! A day to gorge on mostly cinnamon buns, but other buns (such as pistachio or chocolate or custard and so on) are fully acceptable.

Personally I've already had a bun for breakfast and am just about to go to lunch and I'm probably gonna have another one then. Also, I'll be baking some of my own when I get off work to have some friends over and have a small cosy, hopefully childishly amusing gettogether complete with fruit squash and silly games.

What you say, Susy? Your evil and godforsaken country doesn't have a Cinnamon Bun Day? How awful! You'll just have to rectify it by honouring the Swedish one and doing your best to be a little trooper and import* it to your backwards corner of the globe. :)

*To Smunkee: Gluten intolerance is not an excuse - there are non-gluten buns.

Wish I could have one today. :( Don't think my school will have any though. But occasionally on weekends my mom cooks cinnamon buns for breakfast, so maybe I can have some this weekend.

I celebrated a little earlier (Well, no, I didn't actually know there was such a beastie as this day, but I did bake some).

I will say that my wife's suggestion of chocolate chip cookie dough rolls, while not bad at all, isn't something I'll repeat. I'll stick with my normal recipe. :p

Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients:

120 ml warm water (45C)
120 ml warm milk (45C)
1 egg (large)
75 g unsalted butter, softened
65 g white sugar
6 g salt
470 g flour
6 g dry yeast
55 g unsalted butter, softened
145 g brown sugar
9 g ground cinnamon

Frosting
112 g cream cheese, softened
55 g butter, softened
25 g powdered sugar
3 ml vanilla extract
8 ml milk

Directions:

1. Pour water and milk into large bowl. Add sugar, stir to dissolve.

2. Add yeast and proof for 20 minutes or until golden, creamy foam forms.

3. Add 75 g butter and salt and mix gently. Add slightly beaten egg and flour cup by cup, stirring. Dough should be slightly tacky and non-liquid.

4. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and knead 7 or 8 times. Dough should be rubbery and slightly sticky. Form into dough ball and place in a large greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with DAMP towel and leave to rise for 45 minutes in warm place.

5. Test dough to see if it has doubled by quickly sticking in two fingers 2 cm in and removing them. If dough is slow to fill in impression, it is ready. If not, wait some more.

6. Punch dough down and turn out onto floured surface.

7. Roll dough out into a 43 x 25 cm rectangle. Spread with 55 g butter. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle over dough.

8. Roll dough into a jelly roll shape beginning with the long side. Slice into 16 2.5 cm slices and place on buttered cooking sheet about 2.5 inches apart. Cover with DAMP towel and allow to rise for one hour in a warm place. 10 minutes before ending the rising, preheat oven to 200C.

9. Place in preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until tops are golden brown.

10. 10 minutes before rolls are done, mix together cream cheese, softened butter, sugar powder, vanilla, and milk. Remove rolls from oven and top with frosting.

The Friendly Cinnamon Bun
By Russell Hoban

Shining in his stickiness and glistening with honey,
Safe among his sisters and his brothers on a tray,
With raisin eyes that looked at me as I put down my money,
There smiled a friendly cinnamon bun, and this I heard him say:

"It's a lovely, lovely morning, and the world's a lovely place
I know it's going to be a lovely day.
I know we're going to be good friends: I like your honest face:
Together we might go a long, long way."

The baker's girl rang up the sale.
"I'll wrap your bun," she said.
"Oh no, you needn't bother," I replied.

I smiled back at that cinnamon bun and ate him, 1,2,3
And walked out with his friendliness inside.

It's Sweden, what else are they going to do with their time? Without wars to occupy them, the Swedish parliament gets bored and starts picking random objects in the room to honor.
Other Swedish Holidays to look forward to before the end of the year:
Chair Day - October 27th
The Celebration of the Unconvincing Toupee - November 9th
Two-Man Desk Day - November 20th
The Day of Remembrance for the Shiny Hat Worn by MP Svea on this Day in 1978 and Subsequently Lost, Probably at that Indian Restaurant She Went to the Following Week - November 29th

I wish I had one right now, but I had to settle for nachos. I was feeling really dizzy and light-headed for a long while and my lips turned numb. It was also really hot today because I was wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and a mask and long pants and gloves all day, so pretty much all of my skin was covered all day. I don't know if that's why my lips were numb and I was dizzy though.

I was thinking about cinnamon buns a lot today because of this thread. I wish I had one now, but I don't. :(

Potato Cinnamon buns.

2 medium potatoes ½ cup vegetable oil

1 ½ cups water 2 eggs

2 packages dry yeast 2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon sugar 6 to 7 cups white rice flour

3/4 cup butter, melted 1/3 cup honey

Directions:

Peel and slice potatoes. Cover with water and simmer until tender. Drain, reserving 1-cup liquid, Cool liquid to 110 degrees. Mash drained potatoes, saving 1 cup.

In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in reserved potato liquid, let stand for 5 minutes. Add reserved mashed potatoes, butter, honey, oil, eggs, salt and 1 ½ cups flour, beat until smooth. Stir in remaining flour to form a soft dough, turn onto floured board. Knead until smooth, about 6 to 8 minutes. Place in warm place until doubled about 1 hour. Punch down and turn onto floured surface. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out into a larger rectangle, approximately 12 inches wide by 20 inches long. The dough may be sticky, so flour the work surface and the rolling pin, checking to be sure the dough isn’t stuck to the work surface and adding more flour as necessary. Spread the softened butter over the surface of the dough, leaving a 1-inch strip along the long edge of the rectangle furthest away from you completely dry. (Other recipes call for egg wash instead of butter; if you’re using egg wash, brush the entire surface.) Generously sprinkle cinnamon-sugar over the butter, spreading the mixture evenly across the whole sheet of dough. Other spices, such as nutmeg and cardamom, also work well. Adding a pinch of ground cloves to the cinnamon-sugar mixture enhances the cinnamon flavor. Leave the one-inch border free of sugar. Start at the left-hand corner of the edge closest to you. Working from left to right, tug the lip of the dough up and over the filling, keeping it tight. Roll up the dough, tightening the log as you go.When you reach the far edge of the dough, moisten the bare edge with egg wash or water and pinch to seal the seam. Use a serrated knife, pastry cutter or length of unwaxed dental floss to cut the dough into even-sized pieces. You may want to discard the very ends of the roll since they often contain little filling.

The only lactaid available is drag (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDOfeit53vk&mode=related&search=)! It also makes me think of you, which is sort of funny because the lyrics are hilarious as the song is about DIY but every single verse is an allusion to masturbation. Even when they sing "Åh, när ni tar saken i egna händer" ("Oh, when you take matters into your own hands") it sounds like "onani tar..." - onani = onanism.

So, uhm, yeah. That and his bitching legs.

You better be careful. Once you make them go sane, going back willingly will be mighty hard. This is true. In Fort McMurray, Alberta, of all places, I was forced to learn the metric system (before I could do math and science in it, but I had to convert it to Imperial for it to make sense).

Now that I know it, it is all I think in. Not having do deal with retarded conversion factors is bliss.
