NaNoWriMo 2007 - November is the month for writing!

November is National Novel Writer's Month (http://www.nanowrimo.org/)!
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o18/tzor/nano20participant20icon20large.jpg

Basically it's a time to spend a fun fast paced month writing a 50,000 word novel that you can share with your friends. You start on November 1st and and on or hopefully before November 30. If you succeed you get the pride in knowing that you have completed what many others have done in the past and in the present. Oh and you get a certificate.

This year they have a forum on the site for "Virtual Worlds." I'm going to create a thread there for Nation States. So join the fun, stop by and say "Hi." Don't forget to stop at the general forum and contribute to the annual thread on urinal cakes.

Oh and get ready to start writing!

anything you want, nobody will ever read it unless you want them to.

I write mysteries that are hilarious if not just down right stupid.

im thinking about trying it this year.

i have a stupid love story in my head that might take about 50,000 words to complete. id kinda like to get it out of my head and onto "paper".

Hmmm.....I may write a horror novel, with LG as my main character, I'll title it, "Pies" :p j/k. But yea, I may consider signing up for this.

I think it could be good for you. I have a "friend" whose characters seem very similar to people in her everyday life, and she takes joy in writing horrible deaths for them.

I actually took a Detective Fiction class back when I was an undergrad (elective) and after I took this class, I thought up of a detective story that involved a detective who works in Charlotte, NC. Who drives around in a black Dodge Challenger, and he is basically a ghost hunter and uses his ghost hunting skills to solve crimes, but that sounds too similar to the Dresden Files book series.

This year I'm doing an odd fantasy novel, sort of like colonial (pre revolutionary war) America but with elves and a dragon or two.

oh that sounds fun. will it be set in town or out in the wilderness?

I'm starting them in a major city but will move them quickly up river and to a mining camp. From there they will proceed westward toward the mountains, return back to the city and then head back up the river into a full scale war.

It may not start out "It was a dark and stormy night," but more like "It had been a dark and stormy night." The mud filled streets and the spotlessly clean boots of the gentleman from the Colony of Purity will be the way the Priest of the Old Church spots him as a member of a secret order of wizards.

He is, oddly enough in a secret mode as well the colony where the city is had many years ago forbade all priests of the Old Church from the land and made it a penalty punishable by hanging for any priest of the Old Church to preach to the elves.

I did it unofficially last year, and ended up with 20,000 words, which I felt was satisfactory since I'm happy with what I wrote, and felt it was finished.

I came up with a story idea last year, but never actually wrote anything, so I don't really feel it counts. I didn't even attempt anything. :p

I fell in love with my story, though, so I'm going to try again this year. Sadly, the story means so much to me, and I feel it has the potential to be so much, that every time I tried writing, it just wouldn't come out. I can't stand the thought of writing crap without editing it.

One of the biggest problems of NaNoWriMo is that people take it too seriously. This is very similiar to scream therapy for writers; the idea is to just let it all come out onto the page. You can't worry about quality in the month, that's for the later editing. And the thing is to try, success is just the icing on the cake. Not that the cake doesn't taste better with icing, but it is better to eat plain cake than no cake at all.

Check the web site for regional groups in your area. Some groups have actual meetings and write ins. There are groups all over the world!

That's very simple and easy to say, but not every writer writes that way. I personally edit as I write, which leads to a much slower pace, but fewer edits later on.

I edit while I write except for in November. Free writing* seems to bring a better quality story for me to edit later.

True, and I also tend to edit as I write. Remember that few people write a 50K publishable novel in a month. If you want to go for the brass ring, you have to adopt the style suitable for the contest. If you have to do complex research for your novel which might otherwise take years to reach 50K, then it's probably not the best subject for NaNoWriMo.

Don't worry it's still October, you will be fine. You're not supposed to be "ready" in the first place. If you were ready you wouldn't need NaNoWriMo to write a novel. What you will need is the ability to say "no." Saying no to everyone who will want to take time away from you during the month of November.

I have a beginning of an outline of a story that I have NO IDEA where it actually will go once I really start to write it.

So yes, I am signing up, just to get the damned thing out of my head.

:D

I meant to sign up last year, but ended up having to move and look for work and all those sorts of things that left me with no time to do anything else, sadly. This year I mean to stick to it! Yay!

Since I didn't find one, I'm make my own.

I remember earlier there was a thread about this but that was before the official start of NaNoWriMo. And this is now.

So, let's have a word count shout! I'm at 2,280.

Anyone doing this? What's the alias you're using?

I'm checking in as ScreechingWeasel with a small excerpt up already.

Let's use this for exchanging ideas and giving feedback, and helping each other reach the 50,000 word goal!

I realise there is a forum there but their site is quite slow; even slower than jolty-jolt. :)

Yes but the forums tend to be rather slow. That's why I made this thread so that way if we get stuck we can talk here. After all, isn't time of essence for this, my dear Smunkee?

I think I am going to start a Nationstates Wrimos forum. That way we don't spam this one and don't have to deal with the other.

I haven't had a chance to get writing yet, with football and school, but I am going to get working on it soon. I am Scion on the board, and when I get going with football being over soon, I should be pumping out the words.

Your search fu is weak ... here is the thread which you could not find (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=539845&highlight=NaNoWriMo).

I'm in, under the user name of tzor. My novel has nothing to do whatsoever with my Nation States nations. It is about a fantasy colonial New York only with orcs and elves and dragons - oh my! On second thought my nation of Tzorsland is currently in the New York region, but it is still generally not about my nation states region.

Ironically the NaNo forums became readable about a day before November. I only made a quick check today and was able to post something, which for the first day of the event is very impressive.

Ok, I'm up to 3,000 words and I just started this at 8am.

My story... ok, let's just say, I realise the concept is going to sound asinine but it's the best thing to use for a challenge that has a small time frame and a goal of 50,000 words.

Let's just say, I was trying to think of what I should write about for this, and one night while high, I looked over to my cat and she had this weird look on her face. It then dawned on me... write about the world through the eyes of a cat!

So it is the beginning of Nation Novel Writing Month...

I was just curious if anyone was participating and if so if they had ideas.

Also if they do have ideas, supporting them is a good thing to do because writing a novel, in general is hard, but in a month is really hard.

anyone who plays nationstates and is doing NaNo should join there (if you wanna) so we can talk about it.
