If I were to take the Rockies I would do it on account of how hot they have been. The MLB playoffs are largely a crapshoot and the team that is the hottest entering has a good shot of winning it all.

May I be the first to post the obligatory question, World Series?!?!

Yes, in theory Canada can be in it. But only in theory. :p

The title of this championship may be confusing to some readers from countries where baseball is not a major sport (or even where it is), because the "World" Series is confined to the champions of two baseball leagues that currently operate only in the United States and Canada.

The explanation is that when the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball at a highly-skilled level was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States. Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to "World Series".

The yankees didn't "buy" their championships in 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s...so on. Payroll doesn't mean shit. Just look where it got the Mets and White Sox this year (both in the top 10).

And you'd be wrong about the Yankees soaking up 25%. It's closer to 7%, sorry.

And buying all the best players with their money? Give me a break. Take a look at the Yankees pitching staff and say that with a straight face. Roger Clemens is washed up, he doesn't count either.

Actually there are several owners who have a more cash than the Yankee's owner...unlike them he doesn't mind spending a chunk of his yearly take on his team so go whine to them about why your team doesn't perform as well....along with what NG said...you could even put a salary cap on the Yanks and they would still make playoffs year in and year out..

lastly even with "buying" all the "good" players doesn't explain from coming from being considered "dead" to being the most winningest team after allstar break and making the playoffs again 13 straight times...as well as closing a huge AL east gap and almost making a run for the AL east division..the Yanks perform when they need to and they do it consistently..

Getting paid more than the next guy isn't going to make them do that..if anything if all they cared about was the cash the Yanks would probably suck...why play harder if your gonna still get that 14 million a year...for the next four years...

and actually this season it has been the Yank's younger guys who have stepped up when they needed to...they aren't the ones making the tons of cash either...like A-rod Jeter and Clemens...

I wouldn't doubt it if you turned out to be a mets fan

I'm probably cheating a little given that I already know that Boston beat California (I refuse to call them "Los Angeles") in Game 1 and that Colorado won Game 1 of the "Battle of the Thieves" (since the Rockies and Phillies both "stole" the wild card and the NL East from the Padres and the Mets, respectively) in Philadelphia, but I still think that the team that's going to win the Series is the Yankees- they're the best team in baseball since the All-Star Break and that's not something I can ignore.

Now, if the poll asked who I *wanted* to win the Series I'd have a different answer. Since my Blue Jays aren't in it (again...), I cast my vote in favour of the Cubs only because they've been denied for so long (it's almost like they've never won it), with Cleveland and Colorado being close second choices (as the Indians also possess a long drought and the Rockies have never won it). Besides, I think after the collapses of the Padres and the Mets, the only thing weirder this year would be a Cubs win.

Red Sox will take it. All in all they have a good hitting and good pitching this season so I really think they'll take it. Final prediction:

I wouldn't doubt it if you turned out to be a mets fan

Pfft. This is what a real Mets fan (me) thinks of the Skankies:

Top 10 reasons why the New York Yankees are the cause of everything bad in the world in the last century.

10. Every time Derek Jeter smirks, a person dies. Derek Jeter is constantly smirking, even in his sleep.
9. The New York Yankees steal smart and atheletic young children from numerous third world countries, keep them hidden under Yankee stadium, training them constantly until they turn into baseball stars or go crazy. The reasons behind both the homeless population in NYC as well as why third world countries stay third world. countries.
8. A-Rod inspires the belief that the less able you are to understand anything, the better you will be at making gigantic amounts of money. If you'll notice, Yankee fans seem to be in a constant state of self-delusion and ignorance. They're just following an example.
7. The Yankee corporation is currently trying to take over the world via computer chips they put into their hats. They control almost all inner city gangs already, and are the main smugglers of drugs into the United States.
6. George Steinbrenner convinced George W. Bush to become president when they were baseball owners together. The reason why Florida went to Bush? The ballot counters were former NYers, who wear Yankee hats. Steinbrenner is the real power behind the presidency.
5. The reason why many middle eastern countries hate the United States is because Steinbrenner jilted them, he decided muslim people can't play baseball back in his crazier days, in the early 80s. And then proceeded to steal an entire generation of arab men and turning them into taxi drivers. Steinbrenner is the real power behind the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission.
4. The New York Yankees control China, because they control Chien Ming Wang, overrated star pitcher. Chien Ming Wang is actually Taiwanese, but no one can tell Asian's apart. And that name just sounds Chinese.
3. The Yankees caused World War Two, to try and get all opposing teams to send their players into the war. They are actually behind almost every war in the last century, for various reasons, mainly the slave trade.
2. The Yankee's control many of the world's most successful corporations by lending them slave labor, then blackmailing them/making them dependent on slave labor. 98.7 percent of the world's sweatshops are owned by the Yankees. They control most major TV channels, including the Disney corporation, and therefore are currently brainwashing everyone who watches TV into submitting quickly when the Yankees control the world.
1. The Yankees are currently in negotiations with the gas-beings from Saturn to send every non brainwashed person become slave labor. In return, the gasbeings will take over the universe and give it to the Yankees (the Yankees are extremely good negotiaters).
Edit: 0. The Yankees are the power behind Ruffy. Be scared.

I'm a Tribe fan, so I'm completely biased, but Cleveland's had a special kind of year. I really, really, really like the way the Indians are built around solid pitching (unlike their playoff teams from the 90's), as well as a good core of position players.

I do think this could be the year that Cleveland finally gets a championship (sorry, indoor soccer doesn't count in the U.S.).

I live in Denver and I must say the moral regarding local sports teams has increased with the Rockies making it into the playoffs. It's a shame though that there are so many 'fair weather fans' out there who only adopt their hometown team when they're winning.... We are literally out of Rockies merchandise anywhere around Denver because these fans want to part of the ride, so to speak. The rest of the time, the last 12 years to be exact, they couldn't give a shit less and haven't bought anything even remotely resembling the fact that they are a Rockies fan. Of course the same thing happened in 2005 when the Broncos made it to the playoffs, all of a sudden, people wouldn't be seen without some sort of Bronco accessory adorning them. But, what can you do... I do hope the Rockies make it to the World Series and even win it, it would be a big boost to the ballclub and to the moral of the team and it's players. The series now is best out of 5 and they have 2 already... if the Phillies can't win on their own field, they're going to have a hell of a time winning on ours. Good luck Rocks... make it a 'Rocktober' to remember!

I'm concerned that last night's crushing might have the negative impact of spawning overconfidence amongst the Indians, especially the hitters. On top of that, the Indians have Vizcaino's number. They got 6 runs off of him in the 3rd game of the 2005 season. It was embarrassing to see him blow what had been a nice outing by Jose Contreras.

There is a chance of straight sweeps in the Divisional Series. It's unlikely, but it would be neat.

Apologies to the late Chicago folk singer Steve Goodman, but this was just too good. I came across this on another site. I just hate the Cubs and that collapsing urinal they call their stadium.

Baseball season's underway
Well you better get ready for another old day.

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna Choke today.

They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna Choke today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go

Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna Choke today.

They got the rookies, they got the retards.
To be the worst in the National League
Well this aint the year and Cubs are sucky
So come on down to Big Ol’ Gay Bar!

We're singing now ...

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna Choke today.

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna Choke today.

Baseball time is back again
You can catch it all on Crapcast,
So bend your ass and cover your face
Chicago Cubs got the dumbest fans.

You're singing now ...

Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna Choke today.

Go, Cubs, go

Fausto's from the Dominican. The bugs there would eat Florida bugs for breakfast, let alone a Lake Erie Gnat.

Interesting quote from teammate Ryan Garko: (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2007/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=3051291)

The bugs were an equal opportunity annoyance, for sure. But Carmona, who had it just as bad as Chamberlain, was so focused he never stepped off the mound, much less paced or lost his concentration.

"I played in the Dominican Republic with [Carmona] last winter, and there were bugs 10 times that size flying around that field," Garko said. "Those bugs scared me to death. They were enormous.

"It just shows what kind of guy he is. It doesn't matter if it's raining, it's hot, it's cold or there are bugs. He just goes out there and pitches his heart out."

Billy and George didn't like each other though (at least, from what I've read/heard). Billy resented George's heavy handed meddling in the day to day managing of the team, and George hated Billy's stubbornness.

Coming into Yankees Stadium is difficult, especially during the post season when the fans are on their most ferocious, and the Yankees can hardly be expected to go down without a fight, but what I found irritating was the announcers acting like that home run being the moment that fundamentally altered the series, acting as if the Indians had already been defeated. That's such an odd thing to do.

Momentum does happen and I'd certainly call that HR a turning point for that game. It's just a little too early to write off the Tribe, though.

It's hard to find really good announcers and the ones that TBS kept on for the playoffs aren't the good ones that announce the Braves games all year.

How about the bizarre, unreasonable expectations? I mean, whenever Yankees don't win the World Series the ensuing witch hunts are phenomenally lame. I'm a non-NYC fan. I've been a Yankees fan since I was a kid (I was born and raised in CT). Part of that reason is my parents and older sister were fans (my parents don't really have time to follow baseball anymore, and my sister has her kids to take to their sporting events), but the other part is I always watched the Yankees on channel 11 out of NY. I remember crying in 1979 when Thurman Munson was killed in that plane crash. I remember Dave "I can't hang onto my bat" Winfield. I remember dressing up one year as a Yankee for halloween (in fact, my parents have a polaroid picture of that).

Here's my take on the Yankees' loss- the Cleveland pitching was amazing, but the Indians were better at hitting- they hit better with two outs and they were better at playing small ball, simply because the Yankees just don't play small ball. I don't blame New York for not playing small ball (that lineup is great) but I think it might have helped, especially given what the Indians' pitching staff was giving them.

Okay, the Yankees are suffering from the same sort of complacency that we see in Atlanta all the time. They're done.

Now we've got the Bosox and Tribe to watch. The Sox have slightly better stats over the last month coming into the ALCS, but the Indians have the momentum. My bet is that the Indians make a good start -- 2-0, but end up losing in a 7 game series.

I dunno, the argument could easily be made that your home team is the Yankees, knowing how geographically close CT is to NYC. It's people from, like, Peoria, who don't care about baseball, they merely wear Yankees caps without a properly adjusted brim and the stickers still on it. And, especially if you've got a family heritage of being fans. And, anyways, it could be worse, you could be a BoSox fan.

As a side note, Thurman Munson's plane went down in my hometown. Our old minor league park is named for him, even though it used to be the home for an Indians farm team.

Really? I'm a nice guy, and I was originally from the west side of CT (Shelton, specifically). I've never been a dick about baseball, nor am I full of myself. I have found however, that Red Sox fans can be as bad as people claim Yankees fans are (and yet, nobody complains about Red Sox fans).

And they can't bring back the Whalers. They left for a reason, and there's also the matter of them having torn down the New Haven Coliseum.

Don't worry, I'm just stereotyping. I bet there are plenty of people who say similar things about Eastern Connecticut.

And yes, they can bring back the Whalers. I don't care how impossible it is :D.

Or perhaps the non-NYC fans. NYC residents I fully expect to be Yankees fans, it's your hometeam. I'd never begrudge a town that right. It's when people who wear Yankees gear only because 50 cent wears a Yankees hat. Or because that dumb ho Paris Hilton wears Yankees gear. It's pretty lame. Why not support your home team, and not a team that's thousands of miles away?

There's no team in Connecticut. In any league. :(

The yankees and NY rangers happen to be the only teams I support that are geographically close. Basketball -- it's the Hornets...football it's the Packers.

May I be the first to post the obligatory question, World Series?!?!
I know this has already been answered, but I would like to add something: the World Series is between the American League and the National League. You can't call it the "American Series" because that name is taken, nor can you call it the "National Series." "North American Series" would work, and would actually be more accurate, because it includes Canada, but it sounds silly. So, what do you call a competitions between America and the nation? World Series.

I don't understand a fan booing someone from their own team. I know I don't do that. The fans that do that take things WAY too seriously. And I have heard Red Sox fans booing and talking badly about Sox players (having to listen to "J.D. Drew sucks, he's worthless" and other things about other Sox players from Sox fans all day at work really gets old quick).

As far as seeing Sox fans as bad as they claim Yankees fans are, I've been threatened with physical violence by a former co-worker (that is a Sox fan) after the 2003 ALCS. I've been harassed by other Sox fans (that I didn't even know) at a bowling alley, simply for having a Yankees hat on (having stuff thrown at me while I was there, one of them intentionally knocking my soda over, etc). What's worse, and what REALLY pisses me off, is when a Sox fan wishes bad things to happen to Yankees players (one of my co-workers said he hopes the Yankees plane crashes one day, and another wishes season or career ending injuries on many of the Yankees players).

BTW, only one active player on the Yankees team has admitted to or gotten caught for juicing since they began testing /penalizing for it. That's Jason Giambi. Baltimore has had more people involved with the juicing scandal than the Yankees.

Finally, some of my friends are Sox fans. Just because I don't like the Sox, doesn't mean I can't differentiate between the team and my friends.

Gary Sheffield isn't an active Yankee (he's with Detroit). He's also never publicly admitted to juicing (the grand jury testimony was SUPPOSED to be sealed), and never gotten caught by MLB for violating the policy.

I was threatened about 10 minutes after Aaron Boone hit the walk-off home run, by a Sox fan, BECAUSE of Aaron Boone's home run.

I realize that wishing bad things would happen isn't limited to Sox fans. But some of them take it to the next level as far as the Yankees are concerned. Wishing for a sprained ankle or a pulled hamstring is one thing, wishing that the Yankees would be killed in a plane crash, or wishing they'd have a season/career ending injury is entirely different (especially considering the Yankees have already lost 2 players to plane crashes). Both are wrong, but the former is a lot worse.

And I was just hoping Ortiz would go on a sudden hitless streak during the 2004 ALCS, but I don't wish injury on anyone, regardless of the team they play for.

That's not the angle I'm trying to pursue- I'm a stickler for teams keeping their identity intact, which includes things like their colours, the logo and the name, because the fans deserve no less. I mean, I don't think Yankee fans would want their team to become the "Bronx Yankees" or the "New York Batters" or something like that- they identify the team as being the "New York Yankees" and nothing else. For much of the Angels' history (and how they were called when I started watching baseball (1993)), they were the California Angels, not the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, so that's how I identified them (I may be a Jays fan but I had a soft spot for the Angels way back when). I understand now that "Los Angeles Angels" predates "California Angels" considerably, but the team shouldn't be "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"- that name just seems confused. Either they're the California Angels, the Anaheim Angels or the Los Angeles Angels- not the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim", because that just doesn't make much sense.

The Yankees did play some small ball, but I agree that they could have done more of it.

Maybe I missed the specific incident (I didn't watch every game as I tried to watch every series), but I never did see any Yankee laying down a bunt or stealing a base. They all wanted that game-changing home-run or hit and while I understand they've got the talent to approach at-bats in that way their inability to put away their egos (let's face it, always going for the "big hit" *is* ego-driven) and chip away at an Indians pitching staff that just wouldn't give any pitches to hit is what cost them. Granted, the Yankee pitching staff also wasn't that great (outside of Andy Pettitte), but the Indians' willingness to play small ball allowed them to pad their leads and if the Yankees did the same the scores might have at least been closer. Some of those players were trying to think they could get three runs in one swing with no one on base and that just can't happen- hence why I think that thinking is what cost them.

As far as Joe Torre's concerned, he's done so much for the team that I can't see anyone else running the Yankees, but maybe a change is needed. I know "2000" isn't exactly a long drought compared to what the Cubs (and, until recently, the Red Sox) had to go through, but it's still pretty long and for a team to make the playoffs every year and do nothing does tell me that change might be in order. I still think George Stienbrenner made that proclaimation to get his team going (and not because he actually intended to fire Torre) but we'll see.

IIRC, Melky Cabrera and Doug Mientkiewicz bunted (or at least, tried to) with guys on base, trying to move them over.

As to the Torre situation, I don't think he should go. Honestly, if any non-player is to blame for this season, it would be Cashman (although to be honest, he's only had this year to run the team without interference from Tampa).

Maybe I missed it when it happened, but I certainly didn't see it in Game 4 even when they were down 6-2. If they did, they probably would have gotten more runs against Paul Byrd, who didn't offer many good-contact pitches.

For me, what works in Brian Cashman's favour is the likes of Cabrera, Shelly Duncan, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain- good, quality youngsters who came out of the Yankees' organization (okay, Duncan's 28 but he was a rookie this year). There seems to be a plan for the first time in almost a decade and I think Cashman deserves to see that out. I don't think Torre should be fired either, but after 12 years and the Yankees moving in a (somewhat) different direction, it may be time for a change at the managerial helm.

Should they ever choose to change the name of the Yankees it would make the race riots look like nothing. :/
'Twas unfortunate, these last three games. But Beckett's pitching tomorrow, and I think the Sox might just get there offense back.
I mean, they did hit three home runs in a row.

Okay, who picked the Sox and Rockies for the World Series?

I know it wasn't me.

But what a comeback for the Red Sox, huh?

Joel Skinner, Joel Skinner, Joel Skinner...I'm gonna stand up for you, man, but that was an awful, awful call.

ManRam wasn't even going to try throwing to home...he was going to second.

Or how about Lofton getting that double stolen through that god-awful call by the second base ump? Ugh. If that doesn't happen, Lofton scores and the double play doesn't end the inning. Lost opportunities all over the place. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

Although, I expected it. I am a Cleveland sports fan, and all we know is misery.

If it's any consolation, I was rooting for the Indians. I dislike the Sox almost as much as I dislike the Yankees.

Ain't that the truth, though?

I mean, an Indians-Rockies series would have been fantastic. Both teams deserving of a Series win, and both teams in which such a win has been a long time coming.

I'm hoping the Rockies will show up the Red Sox in five games or less.

The Boston Red Sox are the most overrated franchise in all of sports.I mean for one they have the 2nd highest payroll and they somehow manage to underachieve. The only reason there not a hated franchise is because of this whole "Rivalry" with the Yankees. If I remember correctly the Red Sox helped build the Yankees into what they are. They gave them Ruth.Yeah they really should be loved because there supposedly trying to make up for their mistake.

The Indians blew my chance at back to back perfect predicted MLB playoffs.

I don't see Toronto doing any better. Or Baltimore. And do I HAVE to mention the Devil Rays?
The AL East is the toughest division in baseball. Three out of the five teams would be an annual contender for a playoff spot in any other division, and probably four. What other division can claim that?

Hey, at least the Indians have more championships than the Red Sox.

And the yankees have more then the Indians but it doesn't diminish their achievements. I was always of the mind that while it's the best team (that year) that wins the series, it's a damn good team that makes the playoffs. Some teams are consistently good every year but don't make the leap to best. And some teams are rarely good but occasionally jump right to best and then will disappear for another decade.

Anyway, the Indians were a great team and they put up a hell of a fight. I have to say that even when the Sox were down it was still a great battle to watch. My heart skipped a beat every time Kenny Lofton came up to bat lol. Don't get me wrong, I would have started crying if they had lost but I'd still be giving the Indians their due and rooting for them as the AL contender.

Same here... But I was happy when I turned on the TV after I got out of the shower and found that the Sox had beaten the shit out of the Indians.

I should have known that the Indians were doomed the moment they went
up 3-1 in this series. I had a feeling that Boston was going to pull it out
even though I was rooting for Cleveland. I should have known that the
Indians had no chance. Why? Let's take a look back at some recent
postseason collapses.

2002 San Francisco Giants: up 3-2 in the World Series, winning Game 6
5-0 in the 7th, then they collapse and lose the game, then lose game 7.

2003 Chicago Cubs: Up 3-1 in the NLCS against Florida, lose Game 5,
five outs away from winning in Game 6 before collapsing, then losing
Game 7 to complete the choke.

2004: New York Yankees: Up 3-0 in the ALCS, three outs away from a
clean sweep of Boston before Brian Roberts scores the tying run and
the Red Sox go on to pull off a monumental comeback, winning the
series.

2007 Cleveland Indians: Up 3-1 against Boston before the choke
happens. I won't go through the gory details, it is bad enough that
ESPN's favorite team pulled it off again.

Anyway, what do all of these collapses have in common?

Kenny Lofton.

You've crossed up your Robertses- the one you're referring to there is Dave Roberts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Roberts), not the Orioles' Brian Roberts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Roberts) who's never been a member of the Red Sox.

Anyhow, it's an interesting statistic (one that FOX pointed out during Game 7) but not one I'd put squarely on poor old Kenny Lofton's shoulders. He was never expected to be anything but a role player in each situation, and, in each case, pitching was the undoing of each team. Felix Rodriguez and Robb Nen couldn't hold a 5-0 lead in 2002, Mark Prior couldn't hold a 3-0 lead in 2003, Mariano Rivera couldn't hold a 4-3 lead in 2004 and in 2007, Fausto Carmona's Game 5 debacle really turned the series around. Tell Lofton he's got a horrible case of bad luck but let's not villify the man just yet.

I've long held Toronto should shift leagues- the cards are too stacked against them in the AL East (who really can beat Boston or New York?). Heck, if the Jays were in the NL Central, they'd be in the playoffs. *sigh* (14 years is too long a wait...:( )
