Bucking *bleeping* Dent: 29 Years Later

On October 2, 1978, the NY Yankees under manager Billy Martin played a tiebreaker against the Red Sox after an astonishing 14 game comeback down the stretch.

It was during the tiebreaker that Bucky Dent hit a walk-off homerun over the Green Monster at Fenway. That homer by the career .240 hitter earned him the nickname Bucky Fucking Dent (in the papers it was Bucky *Bleeping* Dent). Red Sox fans would see their chances of breaking the Curse of the Bambino fade once more. Most doubted that Dent's shot would leave the park. Announcer Dick Stockton thought that Yazstzemski would catch it.

Dick Stockton: Dent swings....lazy fly ball to left..Yaz under it
Ken Harrelson: That's trouble...dadgumit

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the biggest homerun in baseball history. No it isn't Kirk Gibson's walk-off. If you need a hint, this shot was immortalized by the screaming of "THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!"

You'd think in what seems to be a longish game, people would be more laid back, whereas in fact they seem even more obsessive and angry......

INTERESTING FACT: My father played baseball with Kirk when he was at MSU. Also on the team was an (the only, actually) african american that would become quite well known in the College Football world as a coach. Can anyone name this black man?

That'd be the Shot Heard Round The World...Bobby Thompson off of Ralph Branca, 1953 I think it was?

I'd guess Tyrone Willingham.

Actually 51. Either way it was the greatest HR in MLB history.

Bingo. The only black man on the team. Looks exactly the same in the team photo as he does now.

Bucky Dent's home run was in the top of the 7th, not a walk off. Red Sox blew it even further by not making up for it.

Just uselessly nitpicking.

Dent's HR ranks 3rd on my list. Today, October 3rd, marks the anniversary of "the shot heard round the world."
