I figure most of us have at one time in our life looked down at certain people, perhaps for during certain things.

For example, I used to look down on rich people, especially rich white kids, in high school, that tried playing the urban thug. You know the type - hat backwards, listens to commercial rap, saying things like word and dawg.
It always pissed me off, because I was a poor, white boy, that listened to "real" hip hop/rap music, and spoke "real" hood lingo. I hated those people for wanting to imitate our lifestyle. They didn't know the bad part, the constant state of hopelessness, poverty, and hostility. The only focused on the "good" parts of it.

Of course, when I became a Christian my outlook changed a bit, and I don't see myself looking down at people.

Nope. Why would I want to think I am better than people now? If I do that, then I lose the whole purpose of my faith, which is to serve, losing all pride and self desire, in order to help others.

I have a problem with humility, and thus a consequent problem of looking down on quite a few people. The list is too long to properly itemise, however it is easy to sum up. I look down on those I deem to be 'underdeveloped'. It's not specifically intelligence, like many people base their bigotry upon (though it often can be), this misses the point. People can lack intelligence but possess great internal development in other areas. I suppose it comes to reflective lucidity, rationality, and perspective. People who lack these I find utterly insufferable.

I can like an idiot, but fools I cannot bear. I can suffer the ignorant, but not the close minded and bigoted.

As much as I try not to since I have a certain affinity for determinism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Determinism) I usually can't help but launch into tirades against what I see as stupid or unethical, whether on the net or in real life. I'm trying to be more understanding though, and I like to think I'm not as bad (in real life) than most people. On the net I'm probably just as "bad" as most people.

I try not to "look down" on people, generally speaking. That is to say, that if after dealing with a person I find that either I don't trust them or don't respect their ethics, I'll be wary of them in the future and might not speak with or work with them; however, distancing oneself from another person and 'looking down' on them are different things, I think. We all have the power to change ourselves and reform our habits, which is why I believe in forgiveness and might allow someone to regain my trust even if they've abused it.

So I guess I don't really look down on people exactly, except perhaps rapists and Democrats. ;)

Since Republicans, in the shattered illusion of being some sort of moral authority and overall superior something-or-other to everyone else, have their collective heads up their collective asses or in the sand, when they would look down while their head was at that peculiar angle, they might think democrats were beneath them.

Okay, the baseball cap thing. When I was a kid, if you wore your cap with a flat bill or crooked or lopsided, people thought you were a dork, nerd, dweeb or retard.

Today, when I see young people wearing their hats lopsided or with the bills flat, I automatically think, "dork". I swear I think that rappers or whatever urban rolemodels they get these fashion ideas from are just fucking with their fanbase. "Let's see if we can get them to show their skidmarks off!" :p

I try to look down on the person's problem instead of the person. For example I'm tempted to look down on thieves and other criminals who can't do a real job and actually earn their money. But I try to instead look down on the human nature of greed and egoism that corrupted them, the education system that failed to make something out of them, the prisons that failed to get them back on the right track or society that failed to provide meaningful roles for all it's members.

Just when they start telling me how it morally "wrong" to do this and that, like they have the authority or the legitimacy to define what morally "right" means or something, I can't stop thinking that they are morons.

I also look down at the atheists who take every opportunity to say shit about religion. I don't care what they believe in but if they start saying shit like they know how everything in the universe works to the point that they can claim God doesn't exist, I can't stop thinking that they are retarded. *by 'technically' I mean 'actually' but I reserve the right to retain a slight defiance

Fact 1.

At 6.3" the question most asked to me is:

Do you play basketball?

No.

I don't.

Which shows how uninformed most people are anyway. 6' 5" is considered short for a basketball player not still in high school or some colleges. Until you've been on a pro basketball court as I have (don't get excited, I've had choirs who've sung the national anthem at a couple of games), the TV makes regular people out of basketball players. Once you're on the court with them, though, they are bleeding well TALL. Even most coaches (some of whom are former players). I felt like I was walking in a forest.

So now you have another reason to loathe those who ask you that question.

At least they could get creative: "do you change a lot of light bulbs?" But no, it's always basketball or "how's the weather up there?"

***********

As for who I look down on, it's usually those willing, in the face of all reason, to wallow in ignorance because it makes them feel good. I don't advocate walking around feeling depressed, but the blithe state of complacency (especially in my country) can be appalling. It allows for behavior like littering, absence of turn signals, and general not-givin'-a-shit about anyone but themselves.

And this is not intended as a slam on anything but I said -- I don't want people misconstruing it as an attack on religion. Some of the people I respect most in the world are steeped in their chosen faith. Religion doesn't make people unreasonable, unreasonable people use religion to shield themselves from reason whenever it contradicts what keeps their insular lives humming.

Of course you don't see yourself looking down at people. Your religion makes you feel better than that. However, I'll wager you still do. I try not to, and God knows I still do, too. We're flawed creatures, and that's the name of that tune.

I see, so you spoke "real" hood lingo and that somehow made you better despite still being white? For the most part, the rich white kids get over that phase. I would look down on someone who was 25 and still trying to make that look work. You can't fault a teenager for looking for an identity or a rebellion -- it's what they do.

I think everyone are idiots. 'nuff said.

So long as that includes you as well as me in your "everyone", I'm fine with that.

I am not sure whether I look down at those self righteous liberals or just really hate them. It's not even their standpoint that I dislike. Rather, it's when they start telling me how it's morally "wrong" to do this and that, like they have the authority or the legitimacy to define what morally "right" means or something. I look down on those trying to elevate their argument without the benefit of the intelligence they're decrying. Intelligent design discredits itself because it was crafted in response to a scientific theory and tries to pass itself off as one.

To be fair, I do not have faith in science to the degree that I think the Divine doesn't exist. However, I will say that science has obviated the need for the more superstitious aspects of religion. If intelligent design would say that what science discovers, God set in motion at the Creation, I'd have a lot more respect for it. That way, we would stop hearing about how old the world is based on the ages of people written in a book created by men.

Intelligent design should be about the merging of faith and science, but, in true religious fashion, it's about the attempt to squash anything that doesn't fit within the bindings of their book. Religion equals control; faith equals freedom.

I only look down on people shorter than me. but that's more because I don't want to be rude and not look at them while conversing with them.

I look down on idiots. And keeping with the fact that many of my friends enjoy comparing me to Dr. Gregory House, I claim that people are idiots. Thus, I look down on people in general.

Nope. Why would I want to think I am better than people now? If I do that, then I lose the whole purpose of my faith, which is to serve, losing all pride and self desire, in order to help others.

Sounds like a slavemasters dream, you do!

I can't help it if they are a lot shorter than I am, but I do not look down on people as a judgment, Everybody has his or her place which should make us tolerant of everybody, even if you don't understand their thinking.

I look down on short people because I'm tall and ginger people because they're ginger. Marry an asian woman, they don't carry the ginger gene.

This thread needs a Myrth option, mainly because then I could say that I look down on Myrth. ;)

I think the only people I consistently look down on are those who deliberately choose to be stupid.

I hate 'old money'. They are snobbish, they think they are 'special', chosen ones, an example for everyone, noble etc...

Cause the inbreed level is rather high in such environment, the outcome is ugly, retarded, stupid people.

I hope that one day, they blew up the entire aristocracy.

I even hate them more than Smurfs.

when talking to children I tend to squat or kneel to get to a level where we are face to face.

I guess there are people I look down on, tbh, there is an attitude around my area that being "smart" is wrong, and people hate the "intellectuals" these people are willfully ignorant and I look down on them because I feel like most of them are at best wasting space and at worst making my life harder.
