Your Liberty

What does freedom mean to you? Below is a test that attempts to answer this for you. Feel free to post your results, your own views, and why you think others' definitions are crap.

Are there any ideologies or schools of thought that are openly against freedom? They all seem to be for it. If one says the police should be very small it is because of freedom of privacy but if someone else says the police should be big, it is to protect freedoms from crime. If someone says wealth distribution should be based on need it is because of the freedom of developing your own enjoyment of work and not be subjected to poverty but then someone says the complete opposite, saying wealth should the distributed on the basis of merit to give people freedom to work hard to earn money and have responsibility for their own actions. What exactly is freedom? Having completely nothing in your way? Having somebody to step in and protect your freedom? Everyone seems to be for it. Is that possible? Well, this test hopes to answer these questions and measure your attitude to liberty. We are all for it, but what sort of liberty are you after? What is more important? The liberty from something or the liberty to do something? There are two variables, positive and negative liberty. The freedom to and the freedom from. Max positive and negative is anarcho communism, minimum positive and negate is fascism, max positive and minimum negative is totalitarianism and max negative and minimum positive is anarcho capitalism. The 12 other categories were somewhere in between those four corners. How do you respond to what all politicians promise...liberty?

Classical Liberalism
You scored 50 Positive, 70 Negative!

You believe the state should be limited, allowing individuals to pursue their own way of life without expectations from society. You think a free market and choice on how to lead your own life are very important. To you, liberty is the freedom to lead your own life how you want to and work towards your own goals.

Like most political tests/quizzes/etc., this one seem only to distinguish between the State and radical hermit individualism. I wished that many of the questions were multiple choice, so I could select some sort of "collectively administered, but not by the state" combination. As such, I'm pretty sure that "Classical Liberalism" is not an accurate answer; assuming I understand how this quiz works, neither my Positive or Negative scores are nearly high enough. Never mind that the distinction between "negative" and "positive" rights is extremely dubious, if not an outright false dichotomy...

EDIT: Although, having now read the quiz author's description/intro, a more accurate result appears possible. Let's try this again...

Most of my answers were in favor of how things already seem to be (in the US)...maybe a bit less regulation and more "keep your mitts off my stuff" in my answers, but hardly what I'd call radical!

Being the hard left-winger I am, I find this is pretty close. I have been called a pinko-commie, so this result doesn't surprise me, though I don't favour communal living or pooling of resources, while I favour a system that aids people in living a decent life and being above the poverty line, with big business coming second to the welfare of people.

I got 16 Positive and 100 negative, but that's mainly because the quiz sucks. Just because I don't believe in the legitimacy of the modern nation-state and feel that it is a destructive influence that would be best done away with, doesn't mean that I want to hop on a go-cart Road Warrior-style and ride about shooting my neighbors in the face with an AK-47.

I would never use that word to describe myself but when it comes to view on freedom it could be right. I think freedom without the ability to use it is only empty words that make no difference. Freedom to fly is worthless without the ability to do so. Freedom to buy a house is worthless without the ability to do so. So maybe I do see the communitarian idea of helping people do what they want as a more real form of freedom then just telling them they are allowed to do what they want.

But I don't like the communitarian ideas of running things collectively. I think the government should only run inevitable monopolies like law and water supply. I think the government should subsidize instead of run anything the market can't pay for like universal education and health care.

Whats worse than all the spelling errors is question 11. The opposite of the first option "Industry should be communaly owned to ensure everybody is guranteed eqaul access to resources" should have been "Everything should be privately owned, even public services.". The opposite of the last option "Nobody should have to share resource, what you earn is only yours" should have been "Nobody should own more then anyone else, all resources should be shared equally.".
