The Ox, Thunderfingers, John Entwistle. Best Bassist Ever, in my opinion. Who would you say deserves that title?

I've got to say that I would put Victor Wooten a close second. The man has mad fingers.

Billy Sheehan?

Steve Harris?

Les Claypool?

It's hardly a one-man race.

It's hardly a one-man race.
True, this.

So many to choose from. DeMaio is technically brilliant, as is Sheehan. Can't argue against JPJ either.

I'll just chuck Geddy Lee's name in and wander off. His music may not appeal to everyone, but he's a seriously talented musician.

Junior, if you're gonna throw down about the best on an instrument, you better name your genre. I just named 13 jazz or fusion legends that Entwistle HIMSELF would agree were better on the bass than he is.

I also named four pop/rock bassists that would give Entwistle a run for his money, but they didn't play for The Who and don't play their brand of music. I've got no problem with "best" lists, but I do when they don't acknolwedge that there's NO WAY to adjudicate the "best" across all genres of music. I haven't even mentioned classically-trained double bassists whose chops could make Entwistle look like a guy who picked up the instrument in prison.

Entwistle is a great bass player. But defying your assertion that he's the best EVER on the instrument is simple.

The best bassist in the World: George Perry.

He caught the world record largemouth bass in Georgia, June 2nd 1932. It weighed 22 pounds and 4 ounces. However, his title is contested by Mac Weakley, who allegedly caught a 25lb. 1oz. bass in California in March 2006. Due to insufficient proof, this is not an official record.

Take note of the 'in my opinion' bit. No need to go all adversarial.

Yes, I'm aware of the thread title.

Also: bassist of the millenium, lulz.

Rock bassist, definitely. Metal bassist, now only Geezer Butler holds that crown.

While Bob Weston is a decent enough bassist, he is far from the best.
Geezer Butler and Al Cisneros are my picks.

Also: good to see a thread about bassists. Too many people idolize guitarists...
