Chavez: Sticking it to the West, or himself?!

Recently reported by the NY times Chavez was said to have stated after declaring he would not be attending the UN to deliver his nations speech and instead would be traveling to Saudi Arabia to defend the price of oil:

“To $100,” said Mr. Chávez. “That is where we’re headed.”

This seemingly, is an apparent attempt to cripple western nations who are dependant on foreign oil supplies. However, given the reality that Chavez's own government like many Arab ones is highly dependant on oil markets to fund their nations economies. Do you believe Chaves is rightfully going to stick it to the west by making them pay through the nose for their single most valuable resource? Or is he spelling doom for his and other oil producing nations, by seeking out a price that will force some governments to convert or steer clear entirely from petroleum based technologies.

It should be noted, sine the recent rise of oil prices in the past few years, technologies such as hybrid and electric cars has taken off in their popularity and wide spread use.

Oil should hit 150 a barrel. Then we'll see some real progress on alternatives. Then we can say "Fuck you very much" to Chavez, and to the middle east.

Without the oil market they're screwed.

For awhile it will be sticking to the West and eventually it will come back to bite them when oil needs decline...then again, there are developing nations to buy it...

Even with adjusted prices 1970s prices didn't get near that high.
