Toughest NFL Division

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the AFC is better than the NFC (again). But what is the toughest division in the NFL?

I think that the AFC South is coming on strong. Of course there are the Colts (3-0). The Titans (2-1). The Texans (2-1). And my Jags (2-1). The best part about it, all three losses have come to other teams in the division. The Colts beat the Titans and the Houstons. The Jags lost to the Titans.

Tennessee looked good in beating last year's Cinderella Saints at the Super Dome. Plus Vince Young has had a year to get better.

Houston has added Matt Schaub and Mario Williams is finally showing why he was a 1st round pick.

Jacksonville ran all over the supposed #1 defense last week (Denver) and if there running game and defense come alive, they can hang with anybody.

Finally, there are the Colts. They don't seem to have lost a step since the Super Bowl.

As far as other divisions go, New England might be unbeatable this year but the rest of the AFC East is garbage. In the west, San Diego has fallen off the map. And Pittsburgh is good, but the rest of the AFC North is junk.

The NFC... I don't think they have 4 teams in the entire conference that are as good as Houston, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Indy.

Isn't AFC South the only division with all its teams having a winning record?

I think an arguement for the AFC North can be made along with the South. Not just because of the Steelers but the Ravens really showed something last game and though Cincinnati has been given tough knocks (what the hell happened against the Browns!?!) they have potential (though hopefully won't show it until my Patriots knock their teeth out when they visit Paul Brown Stadium).

Win/Loss means nothing at this point. You have to look at what things will be like at the end of the season.

I define the "toughest" division as being the one that is clinched last. There was more competition for that division than one that is won by a team that clinched weeks before the season ended.

At this point, I'd say that distinction will likely go to the AFC West or the NFC North, the NFC North being more likely.

I define 'toughest' as the division that whoops up on all the other divisions most.

In the NFC South, you might have a situation (again) where a 9-7 team locks it up during the last week over an 8-8 team. Whereas in the AFC South, you are quite possibly looking at the Colts winning it with a 13-3 record and clinching two weeks early, and two other teams coming in at 10-6, one of them getting the wildcard and the other going home. I think any division you can win with a 9-7 record is pretty weak.

It may be too early to tell yet. I thought the AFC North would be damn good this year but they haven't shown up yet. When it's all said and done, the second place team will probably compete for the wildcard but I doubt the third place team will even have a winning record. I could see the AFC South having three teams with winning records and the fourth at 8-8.
